Telegraph-Journal reviews Samsung Instinct: Not in same league as Apple’s iPhone

“The Samsung Instinct is an elegant, full-featured touch cellphone that is arguably the best consumer device Bell Mobility has ever launched in Canada,” David Shipley reports for The Telegraph-Journal (Brunswick News). “But it’s not in the same league as Apple Inc.’s iPhone.”

“While the Samsung Instinct ($130 on a three-year contract) looks undeniably like the iPhone, the similarities are only on the surface,” Shipley reports.

“One feature the Instinct lacks that the iPhone has is Wi-Fi connectivity. This gives the iPhone a distinct edge when it comes to mobile browsing speed when Wi-Fi is available as well as savings on data usage as Wi-Fi data doesn’t count against monthly limits,” Shipley reports.

The Instinct is “a ‘me-too-phone’ and is burdened by a slow and clunky user interface. Surfing the web on its browser was pouring-molasses-on-a-cold-day slow at times, despite being on Bell Aliant’s advanced EVDO high-speed mobile data network in Moncton. Using the browser was frustrating at times as well because the software’s zoom-in and zoom-out button for web pages lacks the sophistication and the ease of Apple’s pinch and spread finger motions,” Shipley reports.

“The Instinct isn’t an iPhone-killer because it lacks Apple’s winning combination of elegant hardware, sleek, easy-to-use software and tight integration with the iTunes Music and Applications store,” Shipley reports.

“For those looking for the bleeding-edge of smartphones and want the ultimate mobile user experience, the iPhone is still the clear choice,” Shipley reports.

  1. Yup, there is no way these guys are going to be able to match Apple’s Mac OS X on the iPhone. They’ll catch up with todays model in 5 years and get sued for patent infringement, while Apple is launching the 5th generation iPhone… Good luck.

  2. Well, I am not sure about this device, and let me start by stating that I do love my iPhone. But I have had my iPhone crash while trying to take a call. This never happened to me on my crummy Motorola phones. So this OSX thing is only as good as they can make it stable. This did happen with the 2.0 software. It has not happened with the new 2.0.1 so hopefully this did get fixed. It’s pretty pathetic that your super smart multi-touch phone can’t even take a call.

  3. And Samsung keeps stating that the In-Stink is selling at a record pace. Like 1 or so a day I think. Too bad they are not counting the returns once a buyer realizes what a POS that phone is. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  4. Their ad in the AJC the last two Sunday’s says…”Instinct…More for less, the iPhone…less for more.
A three year contract, lacking iPod, lacking iTunes, lacking the App Store, lacking multi-touch, lacking Safari,
and most of all, lacking WiFi. Just how dumb do they think people are???

  5. I just got the Samsung Instinct – primarily because I didn`t want to pay Rogers $60 a month for an iPhone (I live in Canada). Being a current Bell customer with a stupidly cheap plan ($30 a month for everything I want including unlimited browsing) I opted to stay with them and get the Instinct. While you make the obvious comparisons to the iPhone, and yes, it comes up short, I can still tell you that the Instinct is a very good phone – especially if you really dislike Rogers. 6. Why is the iPhone version 1 so slow since the 3g has come out. I am starting to think Steve Jobs wants me to buy a new phone. I think I want a refund. The phone is just crazy slow. It worked before. Is Apple working on it? When will they address it. Apple store in Chicago knows about it. Let’s get going Steve.

Try reinstalling iTunes and reset your iPhone and be sure to use the latest 2.0.1, because mine is not running any slower then before.

    @ragarcia

It has happened to me three times. This time was the most distressing because it was a very important call. The iPhone never unlocked, the ringer stopped ringing and the vibration kept on happening until I forced started the phone. Not exactly what I expected from Apple at all. It seems fine now with the 2.0.1

  8. Sorry to be harsh Jonathan but posts I’ve read here from Canadians have been nothing but a lot of whining. Quite why you think anyone here would be interested in reading an amateur ‘review’ on an inferior phone is beyond me.
Canadians made Rogers the nation’s biggest carrier, which means they’re all excessively dull or horribly masochistic.
I’m going to a Mercedes forum now to tell them why I like the new Focus.

  9. My 1st gen iPhone is still going strong. No crashes at all since 2.0/2.01 updates. There are a few glitches, but still very stable and useable. It only locked up 3 or 4 times in the whole first year, and I bought it on the first day it was available, and, no, I didn’t have to wait in line. I had 2 treos before that on Sprint. The service sucked and just kept getting worse, and both crashed. The weird thing was that the 650 was a lot more stable than the 700p, which crashed almost as much as my old iPaq. It will be a long time before someone outdoes Apple on the iPhone. I couldn’t be happier and I have not had any of the problems that I hear/read about. I love the App Store, too.

    MW: forward…apropos.

  10. @Mac-nugget

Me too I love my iPhone and it hasn’t crashed while on the phone yet. I have Safari quitting quite a lot and Mail also.
Nevertheless that’s why I dumped Nokia for bb because it crashed several times while on important conversation. And my bb crashed too, with the wonderful JVM error and the cute JVM Reset button appearing. Just letting you know in case you would like to switch. Problem with other smart phone vendors they are unable to make decent software, prove is they are using somebody else’s and second proof they have bad taste…
Years ago I was using Nokia over all other phones because they had the best UI. Of course now Apple is in the game we have finally decent software. For those present in 1984, remember Finder 1.0 and compare to now. Now check iPhone 1.0 and iPhone 2.0. I can’t wait to see version 3 and up ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
