Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - 08:15 AM EST

TeliaSonera today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia later this year.

Source: TeliaSonera

MacDailyNews Note: In their brief statement, TeliaSonera did not comment whether it obtained exclusive rights to sell Apple's iPhone, nor did the company mention which model of iPhone(s) the deal included.

I wonder what the Norwegian consumer ombudsman will have to say about it. Is it a closed system he can complain about?

Those countries have a combined population of 26.25 million, and most of them (the Scandinavian ones at least) are very prosperous.

So what does "Miike in Helsinki" - or maybe "One Guy in Finland" - think? Is this a good alliance for Apple?

May 27, 08 - 08:28 am Comment from: Ludor

Countries that were iPhone is still to be announced:
- Russia and CIS countries
- Central Europe and Balkans
- China, Japan, Mongolia, Indonesia
- Middle East (Israel, Gulf Countries)
- Africa

Anything else i missed?

At least in Estonia it's best service provider. Not it terms of prices, but quality and size of 3G network.

@DavidO

At least it's good for us who live here ... TeliaSonera have the best coverage outside the cities by far. I've dreaded that some hot niche player would get the iPhone because of some European connection. TeliaSonera may not be the sexiest operator, but it operates where I want it to. (Big sigh of relief)

MDN Word theres, as in theres no such word afaik wink

Welcome to Lithuania! : )

May 27, 08 - 09:32 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

They had better make these new iPhones and their plans affordable, since the current plans in Europe have limited their appeal. People can only buy what they can afford.

May 27, 08 - 10:17 am Comment from: Alrighty

This is very very good news, I live in Finland and Sonera is already my carrier.

I had almost given up hope with regards to the iPhone, almost one year after the launch and still not in sight, it's all good now smile

In other words, around 75% of world population (and perhaps about 15% of its wealth).

Even with the existing agreements, they already hundreds of millions of potential customers (that is, people who CAN afford to buy the iPhone); and still more to go!

Personally, I'd love to see the Balkans covered soon.

May 27, 08 - 11:20 am Comment from: One guy from Finland

Swedish Telia and Finnish Sonera is now TeliaSonera. Most important thing is that iPhone is soon here. TeliaSonera can give better value than any other company in this part of the world. Elisa and DNA would have been good ones in Finland, but I can totally understand Apple. There is so much competition in this market so that the prices will be good or reasonable. I will change operator from DNA to Sonera as soon as it is possible. I already have iPhone 1.0 16B and it works fine the DNA´s network.

Let's see the prices first. And I'm sure they aren't going to sell the old model in Finland. Finnish laws state that only 3G phones can be locked to a carrier. I am using happily my unlocked iPhone (1.3) in DNA Finland network. Official support would be nice.

May 27, 08 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Jyri

I believe its 3G version as selling them is legal in Finland as simlocked.

Where none 3G phones are illegal to sell in Finland when simlocked.

The way things are going, 10m iPhones seems kinda too little doesn't it? grin
