The 15 all-time dumbest predictions about Apple
Friday, November 02, 2007 - 09:18 AM EST

"It's easy to dump ire on anlysts for getting it wrong so often. What those guys do, however, is provide a particular service to particular people. Interpreting what analysts say in terms of truth or falsity is to forget the real lesson we should take from Prof. Frankfurt: words build worlds," Rob Beschizza writes for Wired.

Beschizza's list includes these gems:

I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders. — Michael Dell, October 1997
• The iMac will fail. — Hiawatha Bray, Boston Globe, 1998.
The biggest long-term problem with moving to an Apple platform is that the company is in decline. — Rob Enderle, October 2003.
• Apple is already dead.— Microsoft's Nathan Myhrvold said after Jobs' return.
• [Apple] seems to have two options. The first is to break itself up, selling the hardware side. The second is to sell the company outright. — The Economist, February 1995.

Beschizza writes, "Any others to add? Now, don't go posting the complete works of Rob Enderle, folks. Bandwidth isn't free."

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "Eric" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: No list of dumb Apple predictions can be complete without this year's gem: "I am putting a sell on Apple, the company that created the iPhone," Laura Goldman, investment advisor, LSG Capital, May 21, 2007. AAPL closed at $111.98 that day. Apple has risen approximately 70% since Goldman's "sell" recommendation.

Or Michael S. Malone, from his article "Apple R.I.P." published by Forbes on October 5, 2000, who wrote, "Steve Jobs can't run companies."

We loved Channel Marketing Corp's David Goldstein's May 2001 prediction regarding Apple Retail Stores, "I give them two years before they're turning out the lights on a very painful and expensive mistake." [Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "loopy_nj" for the reminder.]

We also thoroughly enjoyed Bill Ray's December 23, 2006 article for The Register explaining "Why the Apple phone will fail, and fail badly."

God, that doesn't even count the ones I hear in person from idiot IT types.

Like last year, "Macs don't even have virus protection software available".

I laughed as I e-mailed that person's boss at least 3 different large scale virus packages that were available for Macs and PCs.

Nov 02, 07 - 08:32 am Comment from: Bill in Providence

Yeah, I gotta say I give the folks who predicted Apple's demise around the time of Jobs' return a mulligan. I couldn't imagine the world without Apple, but I was irrational about Apple. It certainly looked bad for our favortie fruit in those days. But the Laura Goldman quote on the iPhone is pretty astounding. I didn't think the iPhone would be this magnificent until I actually held and used one, but it was pretty obvious from the keynote that it would be successful. People who don't get Apple these days quite deserve to miss out on everything they are missing.

Nov 02, 07 - 08:32 am Comment from: critic

Anything from The Register automatically goes into the same category of useless crap as Rob Enderle's writing. If anything, it is even more biased against Apple. Someone please check to see if it is owned by Microsoft

Nov 02, 07 - 08:38 am Comment from: Ray

How can we insure the quotees get a copy of this. I am sure they would love to see their expert opinion now.

Just my $0.02

@Think

You should have told them they're available, just no-one needs them!

From Wired's 101 ways to fix Apple...
"60. Abandon the Mach operating system you just acquired and run Windows NT kernel instead. "

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Nov 02, 07 - 08:59 am Comment from: Darth Mac

Apple is teaching us a lesson in life my friends... never take anything for granted... success or failure !!!

That said, I still believe a Subnotebook/tablet is coming... maybe Benjamin Reitzes was just wrong on the timing. And for Apple TV, a couple of add-ons (e.g. movie rental, also available outside the US) will make Andy Neff (who predicted a success) look very smart.

Bravo Steve Jobs, t'es un vrai genie mon ami.

"It's their (player), only their one music store, only their device," [Bill Gates] said of Apple. "What we're doing is providing choices. So it's like the Apple computer versus the PC. With the PC you can buy from many companies so you get cheaper prices, you get more variety and here with music devices we're coming in with the same. But they're a strong leader in the space and I think as we gain share, people will be surprised."

Not a prediction but worth noting:
"I have 100 billion dollars... You realize I could spend 3 million dollars a day, every day, for the next 100 years? And that's if I don't make another dime. Tell you what-I'll buy your right arm for a million dollars. I give you a million bucks, and I get to sever your arm right here."
- Bill Gates

Nov 02, 07 - 09:17 am Comment from: DevilAdvocate

Just a thought but at the time some of those quotes were quite realistic - not "stupid" predictions. I'd like to see a list of all the Apple "stupid" predictions. Like the newtown or Lisa predictions etc.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:28 am Comment from: mattr

i just sold my remaining apple shares.

no, I don´t think apple is overvalued, not at all. - but with current events (oil prices, war, tech bubble, mortgage frauds etc etc) I believ we´re in for a seriuos ride and apple will be taken along, unfortunately. - let´s talk in a year, where the market and appls stands then ...
(i belive apple will be ahead of the amrket, but nonetheless 30-50% down)
I´ll happily eat crow if it turns out otherwise, i made a couple 100% on apple already, no need to get greedy smile))

Nov 02, 07 - 09:29 am Comment from: Bill Gates

I think when we have major victories, we should quote Enderle more often, like you quote Goldman. The more often your blog is update with his name, the more often he will be found derided in Google searches. He deserves it.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:29 am Comment from: Spark

I give you a million bucks, and I get to sever your arm right here."
- Bill Gates

He really said that??? When and where? That's a pretty sick illustration of the size of one's wealth.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:29 am Comment from: BustiingTheSkullsOfIdiots

That's the point, DevilAdvocate -- they weren't realistic at the time. You seem to have missed the entire point, so let me break it down for you. The world has too many experts, most of whom are experts because people even stupider than they are crown them such. That's why you'll read all these asinine predictions, find out that your source of news is filled with "experts say" and "polls show" and other such illogical nonsense.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:35 am Comment from: jay

Analysts are as dumb as politicians at predicting human behavior. The so-called "analysts" simply do not understand the mind-set/psychology of Apple purchasers. When you don't have a clue what the targeted group think, you'll usually have your ass handed to you.

Politicians have made the same mistake for 1000's of years, and we continue to suffer for it.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:40 am Comment from: Cubert

The 15 all-time dumbest predictions about Apple are easy: going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, going bankrupt, beleaguered.

Nov 02, 07 - 09:46 am Comment from: A Real IT Guy

I predict that people will continue to talk out of their a$$es on a myriad of fallacies and not just the "experts" will be doing this. You can quote me on that.

The non-licenced "toy" is kicking the rest of the worlds assenal.

Nov 02, 07 - 10:12 am Comment from: marty

What about Dvorak saying "the Macintosh uses an experimental device called a mouse. There is no evidence that people will want to use these." That sounds like a failure prediction to

Nov 02, 07 - 10:33 am Comment from: Xavier

Guess why the analysts fail to make predictions about Apple?
Well its because Apple...Thinks Different..
Thats it !

Nov 02, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: Last laugh

Great ending line for the Apple Store failure piece:

"Maybe it's time Steve Jobs stopped thinking quite so differently. "

Analysts don't have the word 'anal' in their name for nothing.

Nov 02, 07 - 10:58 am Comment from: DownwardSpiral

According to marketshare.hitslink.com (MDN's authoritative reference for Mac market share, at least when the numbers are favorable to Apple) showed a decline in both Mac OS X and Safari usage last month.

Ouch!

Nov 02, 07 - 11:08 am Comment from: Wabewalker

My personal favorite is John C. Dvorak's infamous "correct" prediction. He brags constantly that he predicted that Apple would migrate off of the PowerPC architecture and move to Intel. What he fails to mention is that he predicted that they would move to Intel... Itanium.

Nov 02, 07 - 11:20 am Comment from: Mauritius Kestrel

Steve Wozniak will glide down the red carpet after chasing an obscure feral pussy.

Nov 02, 07 - 11:43 am Comment from: Jooop

My favorite is the prediction that the iMac would fail because it lacked a floppy drive. No floppy!! Oh noes!!11 How am I gonna be able to install Prodigy?!

Nov 02, 07 - 11:55 am Comment from: The Other Steve

"Bill Ray's article on Why the Apple phone will fail, and fail badly" is a great read. It includes such gems as,

"Mobile phones are not complex to use because of bad interface design, they are complex to use because they are complex devices with a myriad of features."

But the concluding line was the best, he even took out a trademark on the line,

"when the iPod phone fails, it will take the iPod with it. ® "

Not every day. Sometimes I have writer's block.

Nov 02, 07 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Sol

Hindsight is 20/20. Given the trouble Apple was in when Steve Jobs returned it was easy to predict doom and gloom. It took a few risks like the move to OS X and the designs of Jonathan Ive to prove the cynics wrong. Perhaps the biggest factor in Apple's success is the list of products they never released and those they dropped that would have bled the company dry eg. PDAs and tablet PCs.

Nov 02, 07 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Echo

I especially like how the idiot enderle is quoted twice, and then a stern warning is made to NOT quote all of his baseless, biased spew...

I think it is time to petition Websters and the OED to add "Enderle" to the dictionary, with the following definition:

An idiot. A shill. A fake. A deceitful speaker.

Nov 02, 07 - 01:19 pm Comment from: Best Quote

The dumbest ones I recall are ones like "Apple will take over the world" and "Tiger will wipe out Windows XP" and "Apple will never release an Intel based Mac" and "Macs will never run Windows" and "Because of Apple, Microsoft is Finished" and "Leopard will have some super secret features that will just blow you away" and "Apple's probably sold a million iPhones in the first 2 days" and other fanboy tripe.

Here's my humble cheap shot against both John C. Dvorak and engadget:
"Dvorak: Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone - Engadget" ~ 03.29.07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/29/dvorak-apple-should-pull-the-plug-on-the-iphone/

Nov 02, 07 - 02:29 pm Comment from: @Paul Thurrot

Not every day. Sometimes I have writer's block.

Take a laxative or read Enderle and stay regular.

Nov 02, 07 - 06:58 pm Comment from: Foris

This article should be required reading for all management students - and journalists. What do all of these predictions and comments have in common? They are made by lemmings, those who are too lazy or dumb to think for themselves, find out facts or do any research. They reflect pure bias without insight. Of course, the lesson for investors is that this can happen anywhere, including to those of us on the Apple side of the fence. Which is definitely not to say that I am about to offload my Apple shares like some of the lemmings above, nor that I don't feel at least a twinge of sympathy for those clueless investors who are still holding onto their MSFT shares hoping for the second coming.

Nov 02, 07 - 08:05 pm Comment from: Maryland Balloon Guy

Wow, Bill Ray takes idiotic predictions down to a whole new level. Shouldn't there be an editor somewhere handing him a pink slip for utter imbecility?

Nov 03, 07 - 05:30 am Comment from: Best Quote

"BQ! - get up her from the basement and clean up your room!"

Touch a nerve? There's been many more dumb quotes and predictions made by Apple fanboys about Apple than will ever be made by journalists or analysts.
