The Beatles to share the love with Apple’s iTunes Store on Valentine’s Day?
Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 12:10 PM EST

"Compelling evidence has surfaced that 1 Infinite Loop and Abbey Road are almost ready to bury the hatchet, as both Apple firms drop hints that they may at last bring the legendary music catalogue of The Beatles to iTunes," Aidan Malley reports for AppleInsider.

Malley reports, "Potentially ending decades of pent-up animosity, Apple Inc. and record label Apple Corps may be on the verge of announcing a crucial deal that would give the Cupertino-based iPod maker the first shot at online distribution of Beatles songs, according to discoveries made by Electronista.

"Citing a source speaking with Beatles news outlet Abbey Road Best, the technology news website claims that the once bitter opponents have mended fences and are preparing an exclusive campaign that would further cement iTunes' position at the apex of the online music industry," Malley reports.

Malley reports, "Under the terms of the purported deal, Apple Corps would make at least some of the British rock group's music collection available through iTunes on Valentine's Day, providing a convenient means of promoting the band's recent Cirque du Soleil project, Love. The deal would not only grant Apple Inc. one of the most coveted distribution agreements in modern music history, but would also afford the company a valuable weapon against its challengers, according to the report."

All of those Beatles music demos - "look at that beautiful album art" - at the iPhone introduction should have been a big indicator that this was coming.

Jan 16, 07 - 12:15 pm Comment from: Mac n' Cheese

Did anyone other than me notice Steve Jobs' music picks when he was demoing the iPhone? "Lovely Rita" and "With a Little Help from My Friends" from Sgt. Pepper's...

Let it be...

Jan 16, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Unsquirted

Steve should have made Phil Schiller dress up as a walrus.

Jan 16, 07 - 12:21 pm Comment from: duper

Mac n' cheese -- Indeed, I was expecting Steve to announce they were adding the Beatles to iTunes after that keynote. It really looked like they were setting that expectation intentionally.

Jan 16, 07 - 12:29 pm Comment from: Revolution #9

No, Mac n' Cheese, you were the only one who noticed.

Jan 16, 07 - 12:29 pm Comment from: iPodder

Mac n'Cheese: everyone in my entourage noticed that. Heck, we were actually also expecting - as duper above - the announcement that "you can have those beautiful album arts from Beatles NOW".

Indeed, those hints were quite too explicit: we asked exactly who is this Rita in Apple Corps that must have been instrumental and helpful to iron out all the kinks and heal old wounds between the two Apples.

ntro, to the opening bars of "La Marseillaise" (French National Anthem):

Since they took away my credit card,
Now I find life is... very hard

Cash, cash, cash
Cash, cache, stash
Cash, flash, splash

There's nothing that you want that can be bought
No way should you steal; you might be caught
Nothing you can swipe when you don't have the card with the stripe
Feels queasy

Nothing you can make that can't be spent
No way you can save a single cent
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to pay due on time
No freebies

All you need is cash
Yes, indeed, Ms., cash
What you bleed is cash, cash
Cash is all you need

Cash, cash, cash
White trash: cash
Hash bash: cash

All you need is cash
Pay for weed with cash
Must proceed with cash, cash
Cash is what you need

Nowhere you can go on looks alone
No place out of which you won't be thrown
Nowhere you can be that's worth a hoot and yet, is free
Believe me

Fill their greed with cash
Pay for deed with cash
Can't you read, Bud? Cash! Cash!
Cash is what you need

All I use is cash (All together, now!)
I buy booze with cash (Everybody!)
Pay for screws with cash, yeah,
Cash is all I use
Cash is all I use (cash is all I use)
Cash is what I choose (cash is what I choose)
Cash is how I cruise (cash is how I cruise)
Cash is what I ooze (cash is what I ooze)
Cash, I much diffuse (cash, I much diffuse)
Cash, I got the blues (cash, I got the blues)
Cash, I pay my dues (cash, I pay my dues)
Cash is what I lose (cash is what I lose)
Cash, I pay what's whose (cash, I pay what's whose)
Cash, they can't refuse (cash, they can't refuse)
Cash is all I use
Yee-hai!
Cash, I much abuse
Cash, in greenish hues
It's payday...
Cash, no debt accrues

I'll go out on a limb and wager that there will be Beatles songs on iTunes before there is ever a Beatles reunion tour. Wouldn't it be ironic if Paul becomes the last living band member?

I don't know. How old are you? Maybe you are too young to know just how revolutionary their work was. The best are timeless classics (personally will never tire of listening to Norwegian Wood, Hey Jude, the Long And Winding Road, etc.), some of their early stuff is very dated though, like "I Want To Hold Your Hand". They had strong material and weak material like any band, but their best is the best of the best.

Jan 16, 07 - 01:50 pm Comment from: Beatles were Important- Just Not the MOST Importan

The Who, The Stones, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, Hendrix, Joplin, King Crimson, THE Floyd, The Byrds, Airplane, Simon & Garfunkel, Grand Funk Railroad, Dylan, C,S,N (& Y). Plenty of others.
Temps, Gaye, Stevie & the rest of Motown. Ike & Tina Turner
Don't forget Stax/Volt and the Memphis sound. (Booker T & the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, etc)

The Beatles were a pop band with some Rock & Roll sensibilities. The Stones ARE a Rock Band. Both were Brits recycling black music to America's ears.

The song "Hey Jude" is not the Beatles. It's Paul McCartney's other band Wings...

just FYI

To: Beatles were Important- Just Not the MOST Important

You must be a kid. I lived it. Of course it seems over rated to you kids. But when it first came out it was like nothing out there. Like when you kids heard RAP or Curt Cobain but MUCH bigger, and greater impact and influence. You can't understand unless you lived it.

The Beatles were famous FIRST and THEY influenced other bands and people you mention who became famous after them. Get your time line correct please. Rent the DVD The Beatles Anthology if you don't believe it, that gives the perspective needed that I don't have the time to explain here.

AFTER The Beatles were famous, some people you mentioned influenced them. Meeting Dylan shows it's influence on John in the Rubber Soul album. Of course the Stones are different, they started out similar but took a sharp left turn into the blues lane.

V-Day release makes sense to me. As Ringo says "Peace and love, peace and love." So the connection is more than logical.

I just wish iLife '07 was out.
The ONE year I needed the damn thing to be on time!

No MacBill, you're not the only one.

And this is from someone who watched and clearly remembers the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.

Don't get me wrong. I liked the Beatles and a lot of rock-n-roll. It's the music of my time. I grew up on it.

But, let's put it in an objective, musical perspective, it's drivel. In two hundred years only those who study antiquated, esoteric music (and a few oddballs) will have any interest in it.

Jan 16, 07 - 02:42 pm Comment from: thekilldare

im glad im not the only one who noticed all the beatles references in the keynote. and i personally cannot wait until every beatles song is available for download. can you imagine the immediate impact this would have on the itunes store sales. might jump to 3 billion in less than a month!

Huge.

I'm not a huge Beatles, but I know a huge announcement when I hear it. If Apple has exclusive rights for a few years, it will be bigger than huge. Hope it happens.

I shit you not, Tomorrow Never Knows is one of the most groundbreaking songs I've ever heard, ever. I'm only a baby at 28 years old, but the noise, the rhythm, everything in that song is unbelievable. I think it was at least 10-15 years ahead of its time.

I LOVE IT!

No need. There's a better version - The Rutles
And the iTunes Store already has them (Archaeology). Although, I wish "Ouch!" was on there.

Jan 16, 07 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Freddy the Pig

An apple green 30gig with the whole library loaded on it would be a sweet buy!
The Beatles still sell more records than most of the can't carry a tune in a bucket, don't know my ass from my mouth, don't know how to comb my hair, "Stars & Diva's" out there.
So don't think that anyone who wants the music has already bought it long ago. The Beatles were the #1 selling band a couple of years ago, and still going strong.

Hmm.. it was big a couple years ago.. Now everyone's got their stuff on CD, and is already playing ripped stuff in the iPods

It would be more of a symbolic victory for Steve than anything else..

PS. Remember back when RHCP and Linkin Park complained that iTunes was ANTI-ALBUM?

Similar symbolic victory.. getting those guys..

Jan 16, 07 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Throw Ringo a Bone

It's true--even if you are too young to recall the revolution that was The Beatles themselves, if you like rock or pop or indie music of any kind, I guarantee you without exception your favorite bands were influenced by them and probably have covered at least one of their songs. You should give them a listen-a lot their material might already even be familiar to you as covered by other groups. Their best is the best of the best indeed. No one has ever come close, and some of their music STILL sounds so fresh it's unbelievable. This announcement would be awesome if it were true--a lot of us have been anxiously awaiting those re-masters . . .

The Beatles' innovation was unparalleled and their music stands up as well today as it ever did. I have most of the Beatles on CDs anywhoo, but it WOULD be a coup...

Now, if they (Apple) could work on getting the SECOND best band ever, RADIOHEAD....

...at MORE than 128kbps...

It is even more amazing considering they only had eight track equipment.
