The Seattle Times: Apple’s MobileMe comes of age; now worth the price
Saturday, November 07, 2009 - 12:00 PM EDT

MobileMe - Apple Store (U.S.)"Apple has finally assembled a set of features for its hosted MobileMe service that makes it worth its subscription fee for the right user. As a critic of the service in the past, I find myself with naught but praise these days," Glenn Fleishman reports for The Seattle Times.

"Apple's hosted service has gone through three name changes and innumerable feature modifications over its lifetime, but now has a strong appeal to many iPhone or iPod touch owners, as well as those who have Macs at multiple locations," Fleishman reports.

"MobileMe got off to a rough start when Mac was shifted to its new name, look, and feature set in mid-2008; it was so bad that Steve Jobs issued public apologies," Fleishman reports. "It took months of improvements, but Apple hit its stride with its two key improvements: push-based synchronization, where changes made anywhere are pushed immediately to all other devices associated with an account; and rich Web applications for accessing data away from your own computer."

Fleishman reports, "The feature I find myself using most on a Mac is Back to My Mac, which gives me remote access over the Internet among Macs under my control... Yes, this is the same tool to which I devoted a previous column complaining about how poorly it worked, despite its promise. That's changed. Apple has definitely improved the ability to make and keep a connection."

I will have to check out "back to my mac." Never used it.

It's still not worth the price until they bring back the Apple Backup software, make it Snow Leopard compatible, and make it comparable to the other online backup services out there. We bought MobileMe for this software, and it no longer reliably works in Snow Leopard and Apple refuses to update this software. Oh, Marko. So sad.

Nov 07, 09 - 01:18 pm Comment from: mike

interesting that Ed Bott mentioned a hosting service for contacts and email for 10 bucks a month, and Leo and Paul were saying its a great deal...
that's 120 bucks a year. if it was from Apple, Paul would be fuming.

yes JJJJ, Sad, I am...

Nov 07, 09 - 01:48 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

A tech critic who writes about how a service really works in every day use instead of just focusing on a products introduction?

I'm impressed!

Nov 07, 09 - 01:50 pm Comment from: Soothsayer

Maybe when Apple gets their Cloud server farm array set up in NC we shall backup facilities restored or improved.

Perhaps some other new features too!

Nov 07, 09 - 02:42 pm Comment from: Scarbro

It still takes way too long to connect to the iDisk and upload large files. It makes no sense for Apple to not have figured that out yet. It sucks that I have to use Dropbox when I'm paying for Mobile Me.

LAST !

Nov 07, 09 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Grego

Sorry, but I've never been able to get "back to my mac" to work. I use a Clearwire modem connected to an Airport Extreme. My last setup didn't work either, with my Airport Extreme connected to a linksys DSL modem. It says I should have NAT-PMP or UPnP turned on to work, but can't figure out where these settings are, or how to turn them on. What a pain! This is Apple we're talking about here, shouldn't it just work?

Nov 07, 09 - 03:16 pm Comment from: Destro

Grego,

I had that probelm as well, my AT&T;-supplied modem/router didn't support UPnP and NAT, So I had to disable the router features and by a modem that did support it.

I'm sure your linksys router supports these, you just have to access your router's admin tools to enable it. The router manual should explain how to do it.

Nov 07, 09 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Grego

@ Destro,

Appreciate the assistance, but that was my past setup and I no longer have the linksys. I now use the Clearwire modem for WiMax and haven't been able to figure this one out. Yes I've looked at the manual, but all that does is confuse me.

Thanks anyway,

@ Grego

I sell CLEAR and I diagnose computer issues of all kinds. Your Clearwire WiMAX modem is just that - a modem. It does not have a built-in router. You need to plug the Clearwire modem into a NAT or UPnP capable router, then plug your target computer into the router in order for B2MM to work correctly. Linksys has great support for UPnP. The Airport Extreme uses NAT.

@Grego
I'm using it with a Linksys router on a laptop & MacMini.
In the past using Leopard, I could only get it to work on the laptop - and I tried everything that I could think of.
Now that the Mini is running Snow Leopard, it works perfectly.
The laptop is still running Leopard.
Go figure.

@ Grego

I just re-read your FIRST comment and you do have the correct setup. Please excuse my f-up.

Man, if you live in Atlanta, I would love to fix this for you. There is something really small causing this issue. The challenge is finding it. I get tough stuff like this to work all the time.

@AILORW

I appreciate the all the info. I live in Portland, OR though.

Thanks

As a household with two iPhones and two Macs, I find the MobileMe service invaluable and unrivaled in the Windows world. Everywhere we go we have completely synced Mail, calendars, bookmarks, contacts, and quick access to critical files via MobileMe's iDisk service. For anything else there's Back to My Mac, which is nice but I rarely need to use.

I laugh when I see the Windows7 ads claiming how they can now network their PCs and stream their music/videos; things Mac users have been doing for years. Oh yeah, and they thought of it too! LOL! Windows7 and Sync? Well I guess they'll think of that in a few years too when they get tired of logging into a web browser to access all their email or maintaining a Home Server.

Nov 07, 09 - 06:26 pm Comment from: Cubert

Grego,
Go into System Preferences into "Sharing" and make sure that you have the 3 "remote" services turned on.

See if that helps.

Nov 07, 09 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Cubert

Grego,
Also, the problem may be on the other end. If you are trying to access your home Mac from a work Mac, it may be a problem with your company's server. They may not have IPv6 support turned on or may not allow a secure VPN tunnel for some reason.

Tech writers should not be allowed to create a phrase the likes of "...I find myself with naught but praise these days,...." It's too 1909ish!

Nov 07, 09 - 08:34 pm Comment from: MacBook Pro user

This article, much like MobileMe, is a joke. MobileMe isnt even close to being worth the price that Apple charges for it. You would have to be an absolute idiot to buy MobileMe. There are SOOOOOO many better options. Only a fan boy retard would use MobileMe. Wait for the iDisk anyone? LOL!! Talk about primitive!

it is great to see MobilMe getting the severe beating that it so richly deserves.

Just because you may not think the features are worth it, doesn't mean others won't. Resorting to name calling just makes you look like an asshole. It would've been nice if instead you mentioned a few of those other options. But you decided to take the low road. May my shit fall your head down there.

It's a damned shame you are a Mac user.

Nov 08, 09 - 02:46 pm Comment from: alansky

@MacBook Pro user:

You are an idiot. MobileMe may not be for you, but that doesn't make it a bad service. Far from it. One can, to be sure, duplicate much of MobileMe's functionality with other services, many of them free. The question is: What is it worth to have all of this functionality in one place, under the control of one account? Personally, I would not want to be forced to go out and find the necessary pieces to recreate what MobileMe already gives me. The free web hosting alone is definitely worth money. Please take your uninformed, black and white opinions elsewhere.

Nov 08, 09 - 11:05 pm Comment from: SAB

MobileMe has worked great for me. I've had it from day one, and I've never had the problems that many have had. It would be useful if Apple would add CalDAV support to the MobileMe calendars so that other clients could sync with them. I'd also take a better tasks/todo system for iCal/MobileMe/iPhone, but OmniFocus fills the void very well.

Nov 09, 09 - 12:15 am Comment from: Jonk

@Scarbro

Agree - standard iDisk is waaay too slow. I connect to iDisk via Transmit and it's 100's of times faster. For small files it's almost instantaneous. If a 3rd party can do this, how come Apple's solution is so awful?

Nov 09, 09 - 10:57 am Comment from: NCIceman

I like MobileMe, but I do think it is a little overpriced and some features such as BackToMyMac are not as easy to use as they should be. Good grief, LogMeIn.com works easier than BackToMyMac.

That said, it's great for sharing information between macs. If you are a multiple computer user, then it's worth considering.
