The six all-time worst Apple products
Friday, January 23, 2009 - 03:28 PM EDT

"Not everything Apple touches turns to gold, " Macworld proclaims. The publication asked TidBits editor Adam C. Engst to list a half-dozen Apple efforts that probably seemed like good ideas at the time.

1. Macintosh IIvi and IIvx
2. Macintosh TV
3. Pippin

MacDailyNews Note: Pippin was not an Apple-branded product. So, technically, it belongs on Bandai's worst products list.

4. Power Macintosh 4400
5. Twentieth Anniversary Mac
6. Apple USB Mouse ("hiockey puck")

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Take 5 off the list, too. It may have been expensive, but it was - and still is - an absolutely beautiful product.

Update 10.5.6 should be in there too, wrecked my Mac Pro!

Jan 23, 09 - 04:30 pm Comment from: Wun Dum Gai

I'm glad #6 wasn't wireless. The cord was the only way to orient it properly, without looking at it.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:34 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

The "hiockey puck" should be first in the list!

Jan 23, 09 - 04:35 pm Comment from: ndelc

I still, to this day, don't understand people's disdain for the hockey puck mouse. I never had any trouble orienting it. You could tell which way it went by the grooves in the button. I liked it! I'd love to have a wireless version.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Mactech

Slowwwww news day today

Jan 23, 09 - 04:38 pm Comment from: Rob

Hey! I liked hockey puck, have small hands.

I kind of agree with #5 and with MDN.
It's a beautiful piece of equipment, but the power supply and umbilical cord is horrible.
I am the proud owner of TAM!

Jan 23, 09 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Jimithy

Notice, with the exception of #6, no product on that list was developed while Steve was at the helm.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:43 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

Not so, the Twentieth Anniversary Mac was later developed into the new iMac design we have today. I think that the iMac is a great segment of Apple's product line.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:43 pm Comment from: MacPeachGirl

I went to a Apple Store to get another iPod and was in the market for a laptop. But I saw the reflections on all the computer screens and decided to buy a used Mac off eBay with a regular screen instead.

When I got home I googled for glossy vs matte screens and noticed there are a lot of complaints that these glossy computers are just not practical.

Will Apple change things back to normal soon? smile

cheers

Jan 23, 09 - 04:44 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I have used Macs for only 3 years (even though I have bought several used eMacs and iMacs since), and the number one dog I have used is the Mighty Mouse. If only the scroll would work, it would be great.

I also have a puck that I bought off eBay, and it works fine.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

The Apple USB Mouse ("hiockey puck") was sold with the first iMacs. It was when Apple adopted the USB and dropped the ADB. It was one of Apple's better product transitions used everywhere in the computer market today. The PC makers had to drop that PS2 port and follow Apple's USB choice.

Apple was a leader with that silly mouse.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:51 pm Comment from: MacPeachGirl

Oh, hey yea I don't like the mighty mouse too the scroll ball on top doesn't work anymore, and the two click and side clickity thing is really annoying.

Is it wrong to complain twice in the same thread? smile

LOL wink

Jan 23, 09 - 04:53 pm Comment from: crazzyy

ipod is worst product ever. zune forever

Jan 23, 09 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

What is "Macintosh TV"? If it is the AppleTV, it is great for what it is designed to do and will become much more than it is now. I am sure when Apple makes a Mac mini DVR that my AppleTV will be a entertainment node on my second TV with full access to the DVR content and maybe used to surf the web too.

Jan 23, 09 - 04:59 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Every mouse Apple has ever made should be on this list. >.<

Jan 23, 09 - 05:00 pm Comment from: plank

Worst product ever is those little Apple logo stickers they include in every box. Why so little? I'd like to be able to do a truck wrap or a driveway imprint.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:01 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ MacPeachGirl

Funny, my neighbor just called me last night to come and look at her iMac because her mouse would scroll down, but not up.

I stand by my comment above.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:03 pm Comment from: @ ChrissyOne

Agreed.

Step 1: Open box
Step 2: Set up computer
Step 3: Sell Apple mouse on eBay
Step 4: Trash PC users on Digg (Just for kicks)

Jan 23, 09 - 05:05 pm Comment from: Laszlo

Take #6 off the list, it was a great "unusual" mouse. But the Mighty Mouse (wired or wireless) should be on the list. Definitly.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:06 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Yep. This is the only and only area I give Microsoft total props. I have happily replaced every Apple mouse with an Intellimouse Explorer. Still the best mouse (I think) ever.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Asmodeus

The Performa 52xx/62xx series were THE biggest pieces of shit Apple EVER made, period. Read about these lovely machines at http://www.lowendmac.com/tech/x200.shtml for a good laugh.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:09 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

I remember what a TOTAL B|TçH it was to install Ram in an 8100, which I did frequently. You had to take off the whole motherboard and it had sharp metal prongs all over inside. Horrible!

Jan 23, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: DJ

Love the hockey puck – ideal for us dainty-handed folk.

Still use it occasionally just for fun. Strange being wired though.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: R Gonz

How about adding Apple iPod HI-FI - that thing was AWFUL!

Jan 23, 09 - 05:11 pm Comment from: TowerTone

anyone had any luck with these?

hey, Chrissy
whaddup

Jan 23, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Gosh

MDN does the BBC thing and feels the need to restore an ambiguous equilibrium after having said something good previously about the Mac.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: JS2000

The all-glossy MacBook Pro line, i.e. the loss of the matte screen. Bring back matte to all the notebooks, not just the new 17" MBP.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:14 pm Comment from: CourtJester

The Performa range never appealed to me as I understand none could display millions of colours. Definitely a candidate for one of the worst products I think.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:15 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ TT

Not much, just another sad day in the salt mines. Hows you? Cold up on those aerials?

Jan 23, 09 - 05:15 pm Comment from: medelegant

I have the greatest respect for Adam Engst and I agree for the most part with his listing.
The worst products from Apple were those models brought to market that while technically identical had model designations that were only differentiated by the bundles of software included. Trying to produce different packages for the various retail chains and superstores led to so much confusion with buyers.
If Pippin is on the list, then I would suggest that the ImageWriter LQ should be added (replacing the TAM.) It was one damned noisy printer and had terrible feed problems.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Glossy is Good

I love my Mighty Mouse!

The trackball does need cleaned sometimes, but such is life!

Jan 23, 09 - 05:21 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

I also thought the TAM was a gorgeous machine, if ridiculously overpriced. Just another case where Apple's ideas were ahead of any realistic way to economically produce them.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:24 pm Comment from: Quad Core

I LOVE the mighty mouse! USing a mighty mouse with FCP is awesome!

Jan 23, 09 - 05:24 pm Comment from: TowerTone

C1
my feet are on the ground today (but my head is still in the clouds)
be careful in those salt mines, bad for blood pressure (and nail polish)...wink

Jan 23, 09 - 05:26 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ TT
"bad for blood pressure"

You ain't kidding. A word to the wise - If you need any support for your graphic design applications, you'd better get it soon.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Jeremy

I only noticed two things:

1) The controller for Pippin looks more modern than current PS and XBox equivalents.

2) People like "MacPeachGIrl" like to complain about junk for years without ever thinking to try and fix it.

The mightyMouse side-grip clicky thing can be changed in a second or two, and the ball can be easily cleaned of gunk if you just went to Apple's site and looked up "cleaning my mouse" or words to that effect. In less time that it takes to gripe about it here you could have fixed all that stuff yourself long ago.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:30 pm Comment from: ldm

Anyone remember the Apple III? Ever wonder why the Mac II was followed by the quadra skipping anything to do with "three"?

Jan 23, 09 - 05:30 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Jeremy

At least in the case of my neighbor's MM, the ball rolled smoothly and worked perfectly fine in one direction, but not the other. Cleaning would not have fixed it. Maybe you just like to gripe about griping...?

Jan 23, 09 - 05:31 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Jeremy
"In less time that it takes to gripe about it here you could have fixed all that stuff yourself long ago."

been there, done that many times.
son of a bitch is stuck and still under warranty.
It is a design flaw to an otherwise good mouse.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Brash

I came to say exactly what Asmodeus said, the Powermac 4400 was bulletproof compared to the utter piece of shit that was the 5200, that thing was just brutal (later improved in the 5400/5500)

Jan 23, 09 - 05:38 pm Comment from: Two For Tuesday

1: removing matte screens (adding $50 anti-glare BTO is not the same)

2: the god awlful mighty mouse

3: DOT MAC.

4: Leptard 1.0

Jan 23, 09 - 05:43 pm Comment from: Splat

What is the deal with the mighty mouse...just use some compressed air in the ball...it fixes everytime.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Aaquib

Sold the Mighty Mouse as soon as I wrapped my hands around the MX Revo. A mouse that scrolls. What a concept..

Jan 23, 09 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Pirate Cove

The six all-time worst Apple products...

Let me fix that for you.

1: Glossy screen iMac
2: Glossy screen MacBook
3: Glossy screen MacBook Pro
4: Glossy screen Apple monitor
5: Apple Hi-Fi
6: Mighty Mouse

There, that's better. smile

Jan 23, 09 - 05:47 pm Comment from: ken1w

The round Apple USB mouse always ends up on these types of lists, but it was not technically a "product." It was a peripheral that was included with Macs.

Interesting that TAM ends up on both the "most intriguing" and "worst" lists on the same day.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: Pirate Cove

Oh, you can't "fix" the mighty mouse without doing some "surgery" and voiding your warranty.

The mighty mouse is sealed shut with welded/melted plastic which requires cutting and high strength epoxy resin to seal back up.

Provided you didn't lose any of the tinsy tiny parts inside.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: drrick

Isn't the 20th anniversary Mac in the Museum of Modern Art in NY, one of only two computers in there, the other being the Cube.

It figures that people don't understand art or are too cheap to actually pay for it, (which was the complaint about the Cube, expensive),

http:rickbrinkman.com/blog

Jan 23, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: Geo B

@ ChrissyOne

My Mighty Mouse does that somewhat regularly. A small screwdriver (I use the back of my pocketknife) rotated around the ball regularly clears that problem.

Would not pay MS anything for a mouse.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: whatever

@ Two For Tuesday

It is not a matte film they put over it - they actually take the glass off and use a matte screen with a new bezel.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Jeremy

@ Chrissy

I am not the biggest fan of the mighty mouse myself and have gone through a few of them already. I did find that the ball gunks up too quickly and "can't be cleaned," and often it *is* just one direction of movement that goes first for some reason. Because it happens to me fairly regularly, I think the single direction thing is still just a result of not being cleaned.

I found my biggest problem with it (and I'm suggesting others might be having the same one), was that I could look at the mouse and "know" that it would be impossible to clean it, (because the ball can't come out), so I never actually tried to. After throwing out the third one, and being intensely frustrated, I decided to go to Apple's site and complain, but instead I decided to follow their advice on how to clean it, not really thinking it would work.

Lo and behold, it worked perfectly. The mouse *still* gunks up fairly regularly, and it's stupid that we have to clean little mechanical parts in this day and age, but it *does* actually work if you follow their directions to the letter.

Jan 23, 09 - 05:58 pm Comment from: Wallace the Man

Performa sucked.
Lombard notebook sucked (bad processor + just about everything else inside).
OS 9 sucked.
(Because of those my kids demanded their first Windows computers.)
