The state of Apple’s iPhone is strong - very strong
Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 11:57 AM EDT

"Of the major companies that announced their earnings yesterday, two of them, AT&T and Apple, beat Wall Street estimates largely thanks to a single product: The iPhone. We’re approaching the two year birthday of the device, and it still remains one of the hottest items out there. Ladies and gentleman, the state of the iPhone is strong," MG Siegler reports for TechCrunch.

"All told, Apple has sold 21 million iPhones since its launch. Perhaps just a drop in the bucket compared to overall Nokia sales, but remember, Apple was not in the mobile business at all before 2007. And aside from just sales figures, in the past two years, it has revolutionized the industry. That is, of course, a cliche. But in this case, it’s true," Siegler reports.

"While there were some third-party mobile app developers before Apple’s App Store, they received almost no attention, and as such, it wasn’t really a viable business. Now, everyone and their mother is flocking to develop for the App Store. And every major mobile player is rushing to make their own app stores. But Apple’s already has over 35,000 apps — and in a few short hours, there will have been one billion apps downloaded in just 9 months," Siegler reports. "Think about that for a second: One billion apps downloaded."

Siegler reports, "The iPhone has established itself as the standard that all mobile platforms now aspire to be. And with so much developer mindshare tied up in the platform, it will be hard for any other to come along and compete."

What I still find amazing is Apple only have 2 models of iPhone. The 1st generation and the 2nd generation. That's it. No more.

Now look at Nokia: the 5560, 5567, 7856, the lovely new 4456 and how can anyone forget the sensational new 4455 series...

Simplicity is the key:

"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
Antoine de Saint-Exuper

Peace.

@Captain Obvious...

I think you mean "Hail to the King, baby..."

Because sometimes an iPhone is much better than a boom stick.

Yeah, people talk about Apple in comparison to other companies as if they've been making phones for a decade. They only conceived the idea what, five years ago and made their entrance in 2007. Their success makes people forget that just 24 months ago Apple was being told that this was all a mistake and they'd be laughed out of the phone industry. That's what makes the story so amazing.

The iPhone is already ahead of the game yet, in about a month, it's going to take
another huge leap forward. I think I'm going to be one of those standing in a line somewhere on launch day for this one.

What made all this possible was a highly segmented mobile OS market. No, there wasn't WinMobile, Symbian and RIMM OS before the iPhone. There were dozens of flavors of each.

A developer writing for Symbian had to write 4 or 5 different versions depending on the manufacture and handset model. Then to top it all off the development tools were archaic and limited (just as the OSs were), and there was no centralized repository to market what had been developed.

Apple changed all that with the iPhone OS, OSX development tools and iTunes. Of course having the best handset on the market helped a little too.

I've been backing Apple way back since 1996. OMG it feels good watching the underdog KICK SOME MAJOR F*CKING ASS !!!!!

Apr 23, 09 - 12:41 pm Comment from: Carrier Pidgeons

Above the amazing sales numbers, user experience, etc. that the actual iPhone delivers to great buzz in the media, to me, the real story is how Apple came along and told the status quo mobile carriers, "No, you will not dictate features to us, we will deliver this only by our own terms". It is the cell phone industry itself that is mostly to blame for much of the stagnation in the mobile space. Not that any of the other cell phone makers would have delivered an "iPhone like" device, but amazing that Apple, not being a player in the mobile phone market at the time, walked in and turned the tables on the entire industry.

That is the main reason I walked, no ran, away from Verizon.

iPhones easily the best bit of hardware I've ever bought. It was destined to be a success.

Just noticed that the first Bluetooth 3 ratified chip: Broadcom BCM4325 has been announced. Coincidence that this is the same chip already in the iPhone 3G and iTouch?

I love this device!

Apr 23, 09 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Michael

@ Jamie:

Well there are three devices; 2 models of the iPhone, and the iPod touch.

You can 't leave out the touch when talking about the success of the AppStore... about 45% of the iPhone OS devices are iPods.

@ Carrier Pidgeons:

I completely agree. They did the exact same thing with the music industry 8 years ago. Of course, when talking about the iPod or the iPhone, you never hear of those achievements, which are probably more remarkable than the devices themselves are. To be able to get those stodgy business types to throw out out their normal models and have faith in Apple's, is something no other company seems capable of or even willing to attempt.

Like Uncle Steve said about the introduction of the iPod, "you don't have to be the first - you just have to be the best."

I am amazed at the comments coming out. Why is it so hard to believe apple is doing so well. Someone said that they came up with the idea of the Iphone and launched it in 2007. If I could be so bold, I believe that apple was way ahead of there time when the came out with the Newton. They planned to have a computer in everyone's pocket and the Iphone is the product of that forward thinking. They are just fallowing threw with there original dream and its working.

Apr 23, 09 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Roberto

"Now, everyone and their mother is flocking to develop for the App Store"

With everyone flocking, and all this mother-flocking going on...
sounds somewhat immoral. Ah hell, go for it! You know ya wanna!

Apr 23, 09 - 02:25 pm Comment from: The Mac That Roared

@Dave

I think sometimes, you can be too far ahead of time and the Newton is a perfect example of this. As good as the Newton may have been, handheld computing just wasn't prevalent enough in people's minds. That makes it really difficult to promote such a product. This time, the timing of the release of the iPhone was absolutely perfect. Timing is something that Jobs seems to nearly perfected. He waited until the other companies had spent their resources promoting crappy web surfing and crappy UI design. He then loosed the iPhone on the market when he knew that more and more people were grumbling about their user experience.

Any product, no matter how great it is, that is released before or after the time is just right will likely fail.

Knowing when the time is right seems to be the alchemy that Jobs knows how to use.

Good work Dave, a 12 word sentence and 1/3 of them spelled wrong. wink

With 37M iPhones and iPod touches, out there, how many total OS X devices would that make? What's the installed base of OS X Macs? 30M? 40M? More? Would that mean a total installed base of OS X of over 70M? I can't wait until that installed base is over 100M, that's a tipping point.

"Three revolutionary products:
a wide screen ipod with touch controls, hoooooooooooo, a revolutionary mobile phone, hooooooooo, and a breakthrough internet communication device",
And then, the mantra!
"…an iPod, …a phone and an internet communicator, …
an iPod, …a phone, are you getting it…?"

Well, mp3-players aren't collectively called iPod for nothing. And the iPhone is an extension of the iPod. So? To get my answers to why the iPhone still amazes me, I always listen to the introduction of the iPhone speech by Steve Jobs.

Apr 23, 09 - 05:36 pm Comment from: bobchr

As much as the Newton was ahead of it's time, If Apple were to make something in the net-book category the would probably be a Newton like device. The Newton had telephony built in. Granted it was not wireless but you could make phone calls from it. There was a version of MS word and excel for it. It had a built in modem and a remote keyboard. I was able to do a lot of productive work on my Newton when I had it.

If anyone wants to criticize Apple for not developing the Net-book category you had your chance with Newton and bought a Palm Pilot instead. The Newton in a modern incarnation would probably run OSX , have a 64GB SSD, have a clam shell dual touch screen with one screen acting as virtual keyboard and have wifi and cellular telephony capability. It would probably have a 1Gbit ethernet connector, a mini USB 3 port , LED back-lit screens and mini dvi output port and headphone jack with outboard speakers.

This machine would not sell for $500-$700 because Apple could not make any money on it. A 4.5" by 6.6" form factor with 720DPI screens in both havles of the clam shell would probably go for between $1700 and $2300.

LOL

Apr 23, 09 - 08:53 pm Comment from: facebookalias

if the iphones sold between 17 March 09 and the end of the quarter were included, Apple would have reported selling a total of 4.5 million for the quarter. Classic Apple sandbagging. Don't get the competition more excited if you can avoid it.

Yes, just as you should be able to figure it out on YOUR own.

I think they call this language... umm... oh yeah, English.
