The Washington Times reviews Apple iPhone 3GS: Simply the best smartphone
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - 01:05 PM EST

Apple Online Store "It would be painfully easy to say the iPhone 3GS, released last month, is just a better smartphone than any of its rivals, rattle off the assorted features and leave it at that," Mark A. Kellner reports for The Washington Times. "The numbers, however, tell a greater story: In its first three days on the market, according to an Apple Inc. announcement, the iPhone 3GS sold 1 million units."

"The simple fact of the matter is that the iPhone, now represented by the 3GS model as the flagship, is a superior smartphone product, one that outranks just about everything else on the market by a wide margin," Kellner reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Remove "just about," as the wishy-washy Kellner gives no example of any other device that ranks higher. Why write something, Mark, if you don't mean it and/or utterly fail to support your words?

Kellner continues, "There's enough new here to make the iPhone 3GS worthy of consideration by any current iPhone user, and more than enough to make it a highly compelling purchase for anyone without a smartphone"

"Indeed, while some are deriding what they see as 'incremental' changes in the iPhone, I would suggest this is enough of a breakthrough product to not only keep Apple atop the smartphone market, but also to help cement its position there for quite some time to come," Kellner reports. "The 3GS retains the ease of use of the earlier iPhone models, builds on it and adds useful features that will attract wide attention."

In order to properly put the superiority of iPhone in perspective, one must really spend some time with the competition.

I have recently made a mistake of getting a free LG Incite when my AT&T contract became eligible for a subsidised upgrade.

I'm not going to go into all the details here about that (you can get much more about that experience here), but Windows Mobile is one incredibly inconsistent, unintuitive, unstable and frustrating user interface. I haven't yet tried Pre or Storm, or G1, but I have little doubt that they can match the consistency and intuitiveness of the iPhone OS.

I will most likely soon offer my Incite on cellswapper.com and get 3GS. This was the most disastrous decision I had made in a long time...

iProne... to overheat, warp, and burn you.

Again, awesome feature guys.

Oh, and hey, MDN, no point in censoring my comments, the hawtness that is the iProne is all over the web. Not like you can retract that.

cause it happened to one person? that is not indicative of a trend dude.

these things are routinely blown way out of proportion by the online community.

No overheating here, Anon. Good luck with that campaign.

Hmm, MDN has a mean streak for nitpicking those who write friendly articles about Apple.

I have to agree with Judy, that was my thought as well.

No overheating here. Some processor-intensive apps will make it run a little warmer, but not 'hot' by any means...

i believe he said that there might be something that the iphone didn't outrank by a wide margin, not that there was something it didn't outrank at all.

Mark is a personal friend of mine, and he writes and thinks, honestly. For MDN to always be trashing anything and everything anyone says, no matter how good or bad, is childish and just about enough to keep me from even coming to their website anymore.

I would conclude the comments are to be more important the item they are sharing with the Apple community. It is narcissistic on their part and if they toned it down to objective observations, would look less like pompous words and more like intelligent conversation.

@Anon

Because you put it there? You SDD.

MDN was correct about the writer--while he seems like a smart, even nice guy, he writes like a sophmore in college. However, I blame the editors more than I blame the writer. Promising but inexperienced writers are sometimes hired by newspapers, and there's nothing wrong with that (especially for tech reviews). But such writers need to be trained and nurtured, not thrown into the deep end to sink or swim. Young writers need HEAVY editing--and this article should have had quite a few red marks--so they can LEARN.
On the substance, Kellman did a pretty a good job. He'll male a good reporter/reviewer if someone just helps him out.
BTW, I enjoy MDN's snarky comments and they're almost always right, including here. Keep up the good work, MDN!!
