The Washington Times reviews Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook: ‘Worth every penny’
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 06:50 PM EST

"Is it morally wrong to spend $1,299 on a new MacBook from Apple Inc. when you can buy a decent notebook computer for half that price or even a recent white-plastic-encased MacBook for $999? The way some initial reviewers have been talking - including two District-based scribes - it's almost classist in some way to spend the extra bucks," Mark Kellner reports for The Washington Times.

"In the words of talk-radio host G. Gordon Liddy, whom I met at a reception given by The Washington Times many years ago, that's a bunch of 'Bravo Sierra.' The new MacBook - all of it - is worth the expense, in my view. From the sleek case to the high-powered computing plant behind the brushed aluminum, this is a computer with a lot going for it," Kellner reports.

"If money is an issue, go for the classic MacBook, still available. It's a great value and a good performer. If, on the other hand, you can or care to splurge a little bit, the new MacBook is worth every penny," Kellner reports.

The macbook is the first, and so far the only, mac I own. Its good but expensive.

Nov 18, 08 - 07:23 pm Comment from: emmayche

But it still has no FireWire...

Nov 18, 08 - 07:30 pm Comment from: Firewire user

The lack of firewire is a deal breaker for me. I am not willing to spend $700 more for a Pro, nor willing to replace my camcorder.

Do I get a prize for being the 1,000,000th person to say that?

Nov 18, 08 - 07:33 pm Comment from: MacGeniusIQ160

Glossy screen, no thanks.

drifting towards hardware choice and defection from Apple's Absolute Hardware Control.

My, how the Apple has turned to the Dark Side.

Intel Inside, Bootcamp, EFI snitching, HDMI, glossy only screens.

I weep for the great thing Apple was.

Nov 18, 08 - 08:09 pm Comment from: Bread

You can turn a glossy screen matte. And I never get problems from my MacBook's glossy screen. And I fail to see what the problem with those things is.

Nov 18, 08 - 08:10 pm Comment from: clyde

Glassy screen? How bout a screen that can display blacks and darks.

Nov 18, 08 - 08:18 pm Comment from: UP YERZ

@MacGeniusIQ160,

IQ of 160?? Yeah, right.

By the way, good luck with the many Windows POS machines out

in the wild.

Damn... if only my 2 year old MB Pro didn't still do everything I ask of it. The new pros are sweet, but I will hold off a bit longer. My next Mac purchase will be for one of the new Mac Pros I hope to see intro'd at MacWorld. I would also love a Cinema Display with built in iSite so I can video chat with my family when I should be working.

Nov 18, 08 - 09:26 pm Comment from: MacDoofusIQ80

Yes, because Apple has always been so open with their hardware. Ah, the good old days, when they allowed clones and shipped crappy beige boxes like everyone else.

Nov 18, 08 - 09:45 pm Comment from: coolfactor

@MacDoofus,

Your name is appropriate. Apple has never shipped "beige" boxes like everyone else. They shipped "platinum". grin

Nov 18, 08 - 09:54 pm Comment from:

For all you babies whining about the glossy screen just get a matte cover.

Nov 18, 08 - 10:14 pm Comment from: Dead Horse Flogger

But it ain't worth a bloody penny for any musician or videographer with firewire equipment!

There is still no substitute for firewire.

Nov 18, 08 - 10:26 pm Comment from: Phytonix

No firewire. No DVI. Yes you can BUY adapters that's another $100 to get all the adapter and remote.
The screen is great. And it is glossy only. No thanks. It is not really worth the money.

Nov 18, 08 - 10:59 pm Comment from: MacDoofusIQ80

Yes, platinum pieces of craptaculatude. With that sloppily programmed OS 9. They should have never gone beyond System 7. Been all downhill from there. I wish I could still upgrade my Mac Plus. I'd have like 20 firewire ports. Shiz was glossy, too.

And, coolfactor, the beast was beige, dude. Pantone 453. But all you johnny come latelies wouldn't know that.

Nov 18, 08 - 11:08 pm Comment from: applecart

But it's so pretty an snappy...

Nov 19, 08 - 12:03 am Comment from: Casa Da Pinga

So now the Macs are palling around with terrorists like G. Gordon Liddy ? Guilt by association I say.

Nov 19, 08 - 04:11 am Comment from: John C. Randolph

I've gotten really used to having a 17" display, so I'll be waiting for MacWorld at least, it seems.

Matte Screen Solution!

Nov 19, 08 - 06:43 am Comment from: UltraVisitor

You can easily make a glossy screen matte, but you can't make a matte screen glossy.

Apple made the right decision with their displays. It's obvious to all but a very vocal minority.

Not one of these glossy screens complainers has to say why they can't just put an anti-glare protector on their display if they love matte so much.

Nov 19, 08 - 07:10 am Comment from: Bob

Obviously this is just an evil plot by the biased right wing major media to praise high quality computers in general and the Mac in particular. We all know that evil right wing media types hate Firewire and love glossy screens. 'Terrorists' like G. Gordon Liddy are mentioned in passing by those praising Macs, no Mac user would associate with Bill Ayers let alone quote him, right?

Nov 19, 08 - 07:38 am Comment from: MacGeniusIQ160

Not one of these glossy screens complainers has to say why they can't just put an anti-glare protector on their display if they love matte so much.

The fact of the matter is according to many online polls, people overwhelmingly prefer matte screens to annoying reflection causing glossy ones. Just google "matte vs glossy" yourself and see the truth, not just Mac owners either, but huge amounts of PC owners as well.

A anti-glare filter is a nasty, dirt accumulating and expensive addition to a otherwise perfect computing machine. It peals at the corners, it yellows and it looks absolutely stupid, especially to other potential new Mac owners.

Glossy screens are being FORCED upon us, just like EFI snitching firmware is being FORCED upon us. You can't even trust your computer anymore.

Mac's are now just like Window PC's, you can't trust either on the internet or LAN period, unless you can code that is, to alter the operating system and firmware.

Nov 19, 08 - 08:14 am Comment from: CourtJester

Reckon I can live with a glossy screen but not without Firewire.

A laptop without Firewire is like apple pie without cream.

Doesn't quite hit the spot.

Good find! Problem solved! Now just need to find a stick-on FireWire 400 hmmm!

Nov 19, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: January 24, 1984

I'll bet I've bought fifty Macs over the years. The new MacBook is one of the finest. Glossy hasn't been an issue, nor has the lack of Firewire.

I wasn't so sure about that last issue, but every problem is an opportunity.

So there.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:10 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Jamie...

That'll do. It's a bit of a kludge, but it's certainly better than eye-sore reflections. For less than $20, too.

Now I'll just have to wait for Rev.B uni-body MacBook Pros.

For those who want to pillory we who DO have issue with FireWire-less, glossy screened MacBooks, MBPs and 24" Apple monitors.

For many of us, this IS an issue. A BIG issue.
Lack of FireWire on the MB IS a BIG issue. Especially when needing to use FireWire Target Disk mode.
One LESS FireWire port on the MBP IS an issue.

If you like the new "features" or fewer features, good for you, but don't rag on those of us who do NOT want less.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:27 am Comment from: Predrag

Intel Inside, Bootcamp, EFI snitching, HDMI, glossy only screens.

EFI snitching?? HDMI???? I have yet to se any Mac product with HDMI; the only Apple product that has it is (appropriately) AppleTV. And EFI snitching? Aren't we a bit paranoid?

As for those online polls, anyone who knows anything about the behavioural science will tell you they're meaningless, since the the sampling pool is self-selected. None of us who are happy with glossy screens would bother voting, since we don't consider this an issue. Pretty much every one of you who are up in arms about glossy will seek these polls out and vote as many times as the site would allow you, in order to make sure your "voice is heard".

The only one who actually knows how matte screens were bought opposed to glossy would be Apple. SJ mentioned several times that matte option was being outsold by glossy at the ratio of 10 to 1. There was no reason for Apple to continue building an option that only 10% of customers would buy, and not charge more for that option.

Nov 19, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: Al

I need to use my legacy hardware!

The lack of 9 pin serial ports is a deal breaker for me.

However, I can live with my glossy screen CRT display.

Nov 19, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: Gosh

Lack of Firewire is a real deal breaker for me too!

Obviously I will break and buy one - because it's fabulous and Apple make it - and they seem to have a direct link to my bank and mysteriously they take money out whenever a new product appears.

I'm not pleased about the lack of FireWire 400 though!
