Things look bleak for Google’s Android at Mobile World Congress
Monday, February 16, 2009 - 01:47 PM EST

"We're only halfway through the first day at Mobile World Congress and already things are looking bleak for Android. Many of the major manufacturers have already announced their new products at the show, and not one Android handset has been seen," Eric Zeman reports for InformationWeek.

"Mobile World Congress 2009 was thought to be the real coming out party for Google's Android mobile platform," Zeman reports. "So far, it's a bust."

"What gives? Many manufacturers have committed to the Android platform. Where are the handsets? Mobile World Congress is one of the biggest mobile events of the year. Android's failure to show up makes me very nervous about the platform's future," Zeman reports. "Android, where are you?"

these idiots have committed to MSFT's Mobile OS again. That is why only HTC has its G1 with T-Mobile. And the economy hasnt given a lot of reasons to comit to multiple platforms

The iPhone killers may have stepped away from the smart phone battle and decided to stay in the sub smart phone market that Apple does not want yet.

And why get an Android when you can get an iPhone 3G or the next iPhone with video conferencing. When video conferencing hits, they should all just fold up their old school smart phones.

I have to wonder if Microsoft isn't bribing... errr, I mean, "striking deals with"... all those "top-tier partners" in order to get them to shun Android.

After all, what's the fun of having a multi-billion dollar cash cow, if you can't use your ill-gotten gains from it to throw money at a poor product in a vain attempt to force it on the marketplace?

No doubt Microsoft has a hand in this. When will these so called journalists begin connecting the dots?

@R2

Here is an example of a crack journalist.

If glasses can confuse them, don't expect them to connect any dots...

Where is apple at this conference? Why isnt anyone complaining about the lack of an Apple booth?

Feb 16, 09 - 03:24 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

Aww, I have been interested in the Android platform, and want it to be a major player in the mobile platform market, along with the iPhone OS, as well as Blackberry.

Come on companies, give us out Android phones!

Feb 16, 09 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Spudly

"Android, where are you?" Still birth...

Feb 16, 09 - 03:31 pm Comment from: billrey

emax: because Apple make their own hardware and software. They don't need to advertise their software to themselves.

Feb 16, 09 - 03:47 pm Comment from: loki

Apple didn't show up either, does that mean they're doomed as well?

Feb 16, 09 - 03:54 pm Comment from: Rudge

Just guessing, but perhaps both Apple and Google follow their no longer attending shows policy. wink

Feb 16, 09 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Viktor

@billrey .. Agree

When you think of the iPhone, you don't think of what company made the OS, who built the hardware, and what tool to use to sync.

With my PC at work, when Windows Xp SP2 was release, I called Microsoft support for some problems related with the SP2, but they told me to call to Dell, and Dell said it was a windows problem, and so on.

I think Apple is making a very compelling (and easy to understand) pitch with the iPhone "thousands of apps" marketing angle. No one else has iPhone's multi-touch interface. No one else has an App Store with tens of thousands apps, providing nearly unlimited ways to customize your iPhone. No one else has the mobile phone hardware and OS capable of storing and running hundreds of those powerful apps. And no one is going to match those capabilities anytime soon.

That's why no one is bothering with Android. The mobile phone business is ceding the high end of the smart-phone market to Apple's iPhone.

So this website just did a pop-under advert that started playing a video with sound. You know what, I'm done with macdailynews until they pull such advertising.

Two reasons for less Android than expected. One, MS is buying market share. They only need to strike deals with HTC, Samsung, LG, and that's pretty much it, right? I mean, Apple uses OS X. Palm is going towards Nova. Blackberry is using their linux-based OS. Nokia is using Symbian. Moto is almost a lost cause. Really, there are three major independents, and it looks like MS got one of them to sign an exclusive.

The other major reason is carriers. Carriers don't want to give up control. They don't want cellphones that go around their expensive cash streams like Vcast or ringtone business. You'll see the minor cell carriers get on board, but the majors will wait as long as possible, before cannibalizing their own revenue streams. Cell carriers are the gatekeepers. Don't expect Verizon to carry an Android phone any time soon.

Perhaps Jobs was correct when he said Android hurts more than help Google. Now everybody is afraid of Google taking over everything. If Google just focused on providing great Apps to run on any mobile OS like on the iPhone they would reach a much wider distribution.

You do know that Safari (and Firefox) have pop-up blockers, right?

Feb 17, 09 - 06:31 am Comment from: Ian Betteridge

One problem: the report this story links to is wrong. HTC announced a new Android phone, the HTC Magic, which Vodaphone will be distributing. And LG confirmed that it will be producing an Android-based phone later this year.

Obviously, the original poster was too busy in the hospitality room to actually go ask HTC or LG if he was right!
