Think Secret dishes on Apple’s Final Cut Pro 6, Final Cut Extreme, new high-end Apple displays

“Sources report that Apple is finishing up development on a new version of its Final Cut Studio suite, including Final Cut Pro 6, and will likely deliver the next-generation version of its professional video editing software when the National Association of Broadcasters kicks off the annual NAB trade show in April,” Think Secret reports via PC Magazine.

Think Secret reports, “Most notable among the additions planned for Final Cut Pro 6 will be the release of a new, hardware-accelerated version of the software dubbed Final Cut Extreme. Sources say Extreme is slated to ship later this year, likely in the summer, with a price range of $10,000 to $30,000, depending on configuration. With such a solution, Apple is gearing up to take on main rival Avid in the realm of high-end video editing systems.”

“Sources also say that Final Cut Pro 6 will require a 64-bit processor—PowerPC G5 or Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon—and that it will require Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, as the software will make extensive use of Leopard’s new Core Animation technology,” Think Secret reports. “…It is also rumored that Apple will delivery new high-end displays around NAB as well, including at least one display that will exceed the specifications of Apple’s current top-of-the-line 30-inch Cinema Display, including possible support for 4K+ resolutions. In addition, Apple is said to be considering bumping the display on the 17-inch MacBook Pro to a 1920×1080 resolution, allowing for native HD editing.”

  1. Am I off the mark when I speculate that Think Secret is posting it’s most Apple-antagonizing rumors on other, more “respectable” publications? This NAB report was posted at eWeek and PC Magazine, with a shorter report on ThinkSecret.com.

Maybe by spreading out the publication of rumors, Ryan Katz is seeking to protect himself against reprisals by the mother ship?

Anyways, we’re all rapt with hunger for any Apple news, especially the tasty bits!

  2. If true, it means two things:

    – Leopard must be released at or before FCP6 ships.

    – FCP6 will be shown off and announced but will not be shipping for a few months – or at least – not until Leopard hits the streets.

Either way, if FCP6 and Xtreme are to require Leopard, it means will will be given a Special Event BEFORE the NAB, which will give us the exact date of Leopards ship time.

  3. M@c,
Final Cut Extreme is the $30K edition which is the hardware accelerated version which I would guess would only run on high end systems or systems built specifically for the Extreme. The regular version of Final Cut will run on PPC G5.

I for one hope the Final Cut Extreme rumor is true. It’s about time Apple started taking on Avid head on. Avid hasn’t done anything innovated with it’s software in years. It’s time Avid has some serious competition and hopefully Apple will kick their ass.

Perhaps. But to others they’ve done quite a bit.

Keep in mind that within the Avid family, you have portability. You can offline in a lower end Avid and migrate your project to a higher-end Avid for compositing and finishing.

You also have portable hardware acceleration with Mojo. You get realtime I/O and previews – inlcuding realtime conversion with S-Video or SDI. That can be a Godsend for many.

Hopefully Apple and Adobe kick their ass more. But again, hopefully Avid continues to improve on their already powerful apps and hardware.

Final Cut Studio has so much room for improvement. Looking forward to v.6 myself as well.

  5. I think my 23″ Cinema Display is perfect… the only way to improve it would be to add a built-in waffle toaster and expresso machine. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
