Thurrott: ‘And just like that, Windows Vista rebounds; now it just works’
Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 04:04 PM EST

"And just like that, Windows Vista rebounds. Years of delays, broken promises, and reduced expectations have dogged the Windows product team, which has been portrayed as hapless, indecisive, and unable to ship products. But the recent release of a surprisingly good Vista pre-Release Candidate 1 (pre-RC1) build, combined with internal information about the expected completion today of the actual Vista RC1 build that will ship in early September, suggests that the doomsayers suddenly have a lot less to talk about," Paul Thurrott writes for WinInfo.

Thurrott writes, "Given the lackluster quality of Vista's previous pre-release versions, I wasn't expecting such a sudden turnaround. But Vista build 5536, which Microsoft shipped late Friday, rights most of the past wrongs and offers major performance, compatibility, and fit-and-finish improvements, along with a heaping helping of bug fixes. Suddenly, I can use the phrase 'it just works' in tandem with Vista and not burst into sardonic laughter. It's real this time. And, I have to say, it was quite unexpected."

MacDailyNews Take: Oh yes, it's a magical turnaround. Riiight. From "trainwreck" and "driven into the ground" to POOF! "it just works" (that's Apple's line, by the way, you tech-schizo troll.) Okay, who didn't see this one coming from a few trillion miles away?

Recipe for Longhorn/VISTA

Take one copy of Windoze XP
Add 100 features
Take away 96 of them
Sauté for 5 years
Call it finished

Aug 30, 06 - 03:08 pm Comment from: Chris

He HAD to have used that line on purpose.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:11 pm Comment from: Chris

Yes, and XP was bullet proof when it came out, until people tried using it. Can you say "shill," Paul?

Aug 30, 06 - 03:16 pm Comment from: No Kool Aid here

I hear MDN and mac zealots squealing like stuck pigs. lol

Aug 30, 06 - 03:16 pm Comment from: MacBill

Paul Thurrott is Microsoft's biggest shill. This guy makes so much money from Microsoft every year, it's ridiculous.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:17 pm Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

I honestly don't care what this guy has to say, I care even less when he's talking about Windows. So in general I couldn't care less what this guy has to say.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:20 pm Comment from: librium

Check out the user comments on that site. ppppfffffftttt.
Or wait don't.

No hits for you!

Aug 30, 06 - 03:24 pm Comment from: Shreedhan

This guy does say some cool stuff. I'm annoyed at apple tho, their supposed '3 day' deliever for my new Apple Notebook PC is now on its Tenth day, come on apple!

Back to the topic at hand:

There were SO many driver clashes and software legacy issues that MS did actually have to do some work to sort it. They cudnt just say "Meh, we'll release vista SP1 in 2 to 4 years time to fix them." PLUS since Apple ripped it outta them at WWDC 06 (kinda overkill on the taunts at the end of it though lol) they have to make it at least 86% as good as Macintosh Operating System Ten... right?

Aug 30, 06 - 03:24 pm Comment from: Griffin Sander

Why do we even bother reporting what this Thurrott guy has to say? He should be tuned off. Bah.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:25 pm Comment from: Stupid American

Can I kill him. I see his stupid picture on his site, I want to wind up and smash his face.

Is that wrong?

Aug 30, 06 - 03:26 pm Comment from: rasterbator

Sorry, but I still "burst into sardonic laughter"

Aug 30, 06 - 03:28 pm Comment from: Ray

In fact, you do drink Kool Aid!

a) Wait a minute. The complete RC1 is based on internal information. Not somebody has it in their hand.

b) In order for it to work right over 50% of the user base has to upgrade their machines either partially or totally. Is MS ggoing to hand out processor and video caard upgrade coupons with that steep $400 price tag?

c) The obvious bugs have been fixed not the ones making it to the NBC nightly news in one year.

d) I ain't buying any off this shit until MacAffee and Symmantec and Zone Alarm, etc...tell us they can't crack open Vista easier than a roll of Lifesavers. They have been able to do this up to now.

e) Which of 2000 versions of Vista is done????

f) The XBOX 360 rev 1 was done too.

The more I see the way M$ handles themselves, the more I cannot wait until they release Vista. Let the downfall begin!

Aug 30, 06 - 03:29 pm Comment from: pog

I'm a big Mac fan, and not a big MS fan, but you know what? Maybe he's right? Would that be so strange, for MS to have actually irons out the issues with Vista? Is part of being a Mac zealot, the inability to believe that MS will ever release Vista in a useable state?

Count me out if so, I'm a realist.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:29 pm Comment from: IT Pro-zac

The IT pros that defend Windows are the ones who are in fear of losing their jobs. There are plenty of Linux and UNIX IT guys that will just recommend switching all but the Exchange server to Linux and be perfectly happy.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:30 pm Comment from: maczealot

Shazam! Vista may be less then expected and less than desired, but, finally, Vista is nearly ready to be released on the world. Why do I feel so underwhelmed?

Aug 30, 06 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Ricochet Rabbit

Hey! No Kool Aid!!

Get the Longhorn bullsh!t outta yer ears! That's laughter you're hearin'! The laughter of millions of Mac Zealots who're thinking the very same thing that was in the first post in this topic!! We're thinkin':

So the fcuk what?! Vista will be virtually obsolete before it hits the shelves!! Everyone knows that it'll be nothin' more than SP 3 with bits of corn in it!!"

Thurrotts' just lookin' for hits, smokin' crack and givin' his master blowjobs... as usual. If Mr. Softies favorite shill didn't come up with something favorable he was gonna be left whorin' without a pimp...
and you know how dangerous that is.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:36 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

its a miracle!! Vista was HEALED!!

hey! did they put back all those nifty features that were previously promised but taken out? no?

then, honestly... WHO CARES?!

Aug 30, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Quevar

What's not to iron out in it? Aero? The 'new' window switcher? Um, there was something else they were working on...they have thrown out everything that had given them problems up to this point, so it wouldn't surprise me if they did have it working at least as well as Windows XP....

Aug 30, 06 - 03:42 pm Comment from: Buster

Pog

All I can say is go back and read previous Thurott articles and judge how accurate he is on these things. Chances are you will only get through before you start saying holy crap, this guy is from another planet. Will vist be released in a useable form? Of course. The question is when. At this point in time (according to Thurott)?

Nope. This guy's predictions/staements are about as accurate as the weatherman's long term forcasts.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:42 pm Comment from: Mad Munkee

This is a troll piece by Thudrott. I have installed this version of Vista, and it's no better on 'medium' level hardware than the previous crap that they shipped.

I still find it funny that Tiger will run on a G3/300 with 256MB of RAM, but Vista performs like a sack-kicked dog on a Pentium 1.4Ghz/1GB of RAM.

Unreal.

MW: Addition, as in "this is another addition to the Troll pile by Thudrott"

Aug 30, 06 - 03:42 pm Comment from: gwm

What's not to like? It's going to be on most Macs ultimately, isn't it? If you say no, I'll just tell you that you're crazy. Anyway, Vista is fine by me.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:44 pm Comment from: Redmond Boy

Suddenly, I can use the phrase 'it just works' in tandem with Vista and not burst into sardonic laughter. It's real this time.

We Mac users are busting out in sardonic laughter because we it know it won't "just works" for very long.

And, I have to say, it was quite unexpected.

We Mac users have had a "just works" operating system for over 20 years and "it works even better" for the last 5.

Here's some basic logic

IF Microsoft = "just works" THEN IT = "no job"

IF IT = "no job" THEN Microsoft = "not recommended"

IFApple AND Microsoft = "just works" THEN People = "buy Mac's because they are cool"

Aug 30, 06 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Commie Freek

Lots of people worried here. Why?

Aug 30, 06 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Jim - the independent voter

funniest part of the MDN take was the

"full load" here.....

nice understatement

Aug 30, 06 - 03:47 pm Comment from: to gwm

I won't say no, nor will anyone else: you are too boring a troll to be worth having any fun with.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:53 pm Comment from: Bill Gates

Paul Thurrott is the typical Microsoft Windows Butt Monkey Lemming Fan Dork™ who follows Microsoft's cult of blind ignorance while drinking their rotten Kool-Aid. Anything he writes carries no weight at all.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:57 pm Comment from: RC

I'm happy for Paul that he thinks "now it just works." Meanwhile, I don't give a rat's ass whether Vista does or not, because I won't be buying it anyway. I know what "just works" for me, and it's nothing that Microsoft has ever produced, that's for sure. The next time they produce something that really "works" will be the first time they've ever accomplished that feat.

Aug 30, 06 - 03:57 pm Comment from: Jack

Thurrott...let the hackers be the judge.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:03 pm Comment from: death rattle

And just like that, the weeping sores and yellow crusts are gone, the phlegmatic coughing unheard since the Black Plague all but vanished. And my skin was pink and rosy, and my outlook was joyous, for I overlooked a vast, serene Vista, and I saw that it was good. Sweet Jesus rejoice, for I am heal'd!

Buncha crap. Sounds like a fundamentalist tent show. Has Thurrott went and got religion?

MW letter -- maybe Jimmy Swaggart wrote one to Thurrott.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Rainy Day

Thurrott writes: “Suddenly, I can use the phrase 'it just works' in tandem with Vista and not burst into sardonic laughter.”

Okay, if not “sardonic,” then what kind of laughter do you burst into? Just curious.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Occam’s Razor

Can we have some new news this one is making me ill.

MDN word . . . cost! ha. total cost to feed this wreck?

Aug 30, 06 - 04:12 pm Comment from: JadisOne

His check from Microsoft must have just cleared.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:13 pm Comment from: macromancer

Perhaps what he means is, it doesn't suck AS MUCH as it did before.

Way to set that bar high Microsoft.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:15 pm Comment from: Occam’s Razor

Mmmmmm. Sardonnay, excellent wine, hints of pocket lining with top notes of shit de bull.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:21 pm Comment from: gheem

yeah whoppie, vista as a reskinned version of xp and "works", oh goodie, cant wait to try it.......BBBBWWWWAAAHH (sardonic laughter).

Remember the M$ fanboyz have a different definition of "works". As mac users, we know "works" means no spyware, no driver problems, no major security risks, no problem with compatibility, and lots of productivity.

WinbloWs people think "works" has all of the above mentioned "challenges" as standard procedures, along with my favorite little holdover the Registry!

It is all a matter of perspective really.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:22 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

maybe he means it just works... as in just barely works.

i think i'll wait to hear what the other tech-types have to say about it. up until now it hasn't been all peaches and cream the way Thurrott seems to make it sound and i'm skeptical that all those issues were addressed so quickly.

MW "sort" as in This is "sort" of suspicious.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

gym, I'm not so sure it'll be installed on most Macs. Some, sure. And it'll rarely be started up on most of 'em.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:40 pm Comment from: Steven

He's what most of us are with Apple...

Which makes us smart, and Paul an idot.

What I really bothers me is he actually tries to hide behind the facade that he's "impartial" - give me a break.

I really like how he's making a big deal about a "new OS" that is no more than a SP3 for WinXP, and two years late - I would hope it worked!

Aug 30, 06 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Jack

Prediction:
Vista will outsell Leopard 10 to 1 in first 3 months of release.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:45 pm Comment from: Ronin

Why is it so hard to believe that this beta is more stable and works better than earlier betas?

Aug 30, 06 - 04:47 pm Comment from: max

I agree with 'Tempus fugit'

only just works rather than ;just works is likely to be the verdict

Aug 30, 06 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Dave

Stockholm Syndrome.

Aug 30, 06 - 04:53 pm Comment from: JEG

It just works....barely

Aug 30, 06 - 04:53 pm Comment from: death roll

"But the recent release of a surprisingly good Vista pre-Release Candidate 1 (pre-RC1) build"

Maybe he's talking about the CD media, as in "the quality of the disk itself was surprisingly good." Mitsui or Fuji CDs?

You know he's on the payroll, so he has to find something good to say, even if it's against his better judgement.

Aug 30, 06 - 05:05 pm Comment from: the other Mark

1) I should hope so...after so many YEARS of working on it, they should come out with a version that actually does what it is suppossed to do. For the macophiles that believe that Microsoft would never come out with a "working" version, you are just being naive.

2) Jack is right (10:1) and so what. With thier worldwide installed user base, they should. If they don't, then OSX is making bigger strides than expected.

3) Now, to refute my first point, Beta does not mean commercial. And for Thurrott to say that this beta is better than the previous betas does not say much. The proof will be when Vista is finally released for commercial use. Let's see how secure it is then.

Aug 30, 06 - 05:17 pm Comment from: too boring a troll?

heh. You didn't say no and you're still crazy, anyway? I should have expected it.

Listen up, dumbcluck: The reason that Vista is going to be on most Macs ultimately is because Macs are going to bring it with them when they take another six percent market share. There's nothing droll or unfortunate about that circumstance either. Get a clue.

Aug 30, 06 - 05:29 pm Comment from: BMW

Jack said "Vista will outsell Leopard 10 to 1 in first 3 months of release." <<<<
---------------------------------------------------------------

Who cares? There's a lot bigger market for cheap Chevys than Beamers.

Quantity sold is not indicative of quality delivered.

There's a lot more dumb asses in the world than there are smart people.

There's a lot more poor people than there are rich people.

There's a lot of suckers out there who are hoping MS will finally deliver something good.

Unless Apple or somebody else comes out with an alternative OS for PC folks, then MS will be able to milk their vile-ware for several more releases without really offering any substantive new features.

One good thing you can say about MS, they sure keep a lot of computer scientists from collecting unemployment.

Bill Gates leaaving is the best thing that ever happened to MS. Now if they could only get rid of the sales puke that's running the company.

Aug 30, 06 - 05:31 pm Comment from: TenaciousDNA

Jack & The other Mark:

Vista should outsell Leopard due to the sheer numbers, but 10 to 1? Are you counting versions that come installed on new PCs, or individual boxed copies for EXISTING systems? I think a comparison of retail box sales will be much closer than 10 to 1.

Licences due to new PC sales can be attributed mostly to corporate licencing... are you sure companies are going to want to be Vista early release testers? For home users, Vistas system requirements are pretty high, which will affect Vistas retail box sales, and many home users will not be willing to shell out for a new box just for Vista...

I should be interesting to see how they both do in their first three months...

Aug 30, 06 - 05:35 pm Comment from: DistantThunder

I hope Vista works great. I hope it's perfect. I hope it is no longer susceptible to every virus and trojan known to man. I hope it makes users happy. I hope it comes with a mail-in rebate for the full purchase price, and three months of Netflix for free. I hope Bill decides to give all his wealth to charity, just like ol' Warren. I hope MS stops being evil. If all this comes to pass, I hope we all give MS a great big group hug, and declare peace and goodwill for all humankind.

Aug 30, 06 - 05:36 pm Comment from: TenaciousDNA

Hmmm... I guess I should've just waited for BMW's post and left it at that.
