Thurrott: ‘Mac users have made conscious technology choice and are therefore better informed’

Paul Thurrott, in his Internet-Nexus blog, reports on a story about how Firefox users click through to Web site ads four to five times less often than do users of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, a German Web-advertising firm said Friday.

Thurrott, writes, “I’m sure what it boils down to is that Firefox users are smarter, in general, than IE users. One might compare Firefox users to Mac users in this case: Like Mac OS users, Firefox users have made a conscious technology choice and are therefore typically better informed than their peers.”

  1. Thurott sometimes says things that are shedding a nice light on the Mac and/or the iPod. However, for the most part, he speaks like a fool.

His statements make some sense. When you choose your technology, rather than default to whatever is popular, it would imply that you are a little better informed, on balance.

  2. MDN runs on Linux after running Mac OS X and FreeBSD? Shock and horror ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”big surprise” style=”border:0;” />
Gee, I wonder what MacCentral, granddaddy of them all, runs?

    Linux.

    What about MacMinute?
    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=macminute.com
    FreeBSD.

    MacSurfer?
    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=macsurfer.com
    Linux, then FreeBSD.

    MacNN?

    FreeBSD.

  3. There is anotehr reason why Firefox users don’t click through ads.

    adblock.mozdev.org

With it you can just block the ads from appearing.

One more feature, that extensions bring.

  4. Blaming MDN for their webhost using Linux servers is a bit off the deep end, don’t you think? Now, if they were running on Windows 2003 Server or something, then you’d have a point. From what I’ve read, MDN is struggling to keep up with traffic growth and trying out new options. Big deal.

  5. MDN’s new web host uses Linux. MDN has been run on many different ‘Nix’s. Netcraft is publicly accessible and shows MDN’s history. I totally understand MDN’s position – this site, with dynamic comments, must push massive traffic loads, which costs $$$. As they search around for options, I think it would be a good idea for MDN readers to support the site instead of overreacting like assholes.

  6. Obviously, Aryugaetu has no idea. MDN has already told us they are in transition, exploring web hosts and rewriting code – give them a chance. Or would you rather have a site that takes 15 minutes to load or doesn’t exist at all?

  7. > Blaming MDN for their webhost using Linux servers is a bit off the deep end, don’t you think? <
Nope, not one bit. As Mac biased as MDM is, and how they jump all over everyone else, they should absolutely be running from an XServe (OSX).

  8. How about – Practice what makes sense? If the best thats available at the time is Linux based, then so be it. Also if you have to use MS Office over Appleworks and Keynote, than so be it. I HAVE to use Word and Powerpoint, but I can use Mail and Address Book and Safari. Its not about being a fan for the sake of being a fan, it understanding what the superior technology is, but if what you want is not available, than you deal, not shut down (except if your stuck using Windows, than a virus might take you down)

And they mac users are Knee-Jerkers, any tiny thing the apologists can find

  9. moiety5: You’re right. To do otherwise would be to indicate you have something personal against the guy. If you have made Thurrott’s opinionated columns a personal vice of yours, then you should reconsider your priorities. This latest observation by Thurrott is one that I don’t think I have ever seen expressed by anyone else, and it makes perfect sense.

Sure, plenty of people have made statements to the fact that the average Mac user was more intelligent than the average Windows user, but I think Thurrott’s correlation between Mac user’s being more informed than most Windows users is far more relevant.

Let’s face it, there are plenty of geniuses out there still haven’t discovered the Mac yet, most of them because they are uninformed about the advantages of the Mac over Windows.

Kudos to you Paul Thurrott for making a great observation. There may be hope for you yet!

  10. “Apparently, MDN isn’t as well informed as they went from OSX Server to Linux!!!! FSCKIN’ HYPOCRITES!!!”

LOL. MDN, you have to agree Ary has a point, even if he is going a bit bipolar about it.

  11. Buffy said: “but if what you want is not available, than you deal, not shut down”

I don’t think it has anything to do with not being able to accomplish the same thing with Apple hardware and Mac OS X, since Xserve hardware is very competitive and almost any software for webserving that is available for linux is also available for Mac OS X (or at least an equivelant). It is most likely a question of price, which as MDN is often quick to point out, shouldn’t be your only reason behind a purchase decision. I’m not saying it was, but I think MDN readers would be interested in knowing what the decision was if not purely on price.

  12. LOL! Gandalf, thanks for that link. Looks like Apple still has a lot of work to do to win mindshare. According to the stats on that link you posted, “anal” is the most popular search phrase and the 2nd most popular search keyword. iPod isn’t even on the top 10 phrase list and is #10 on the top ten keyword list.

“hentai” seems to be a very popular search phrase/keyword. Other popular search topics which made it into the top 10 were sex, porno and blowjobs. Apple, are you listening? You have to find out how to break into that untapped market. Could Apple be on the verge of releasing some products for the Adult market? iLube or iPleasure maybe? Any other good ideas for Apple branded adult products anyone?

  13. Andy C, funny comment, I hadn’t made the same connections with the keywords as I understand the existence of porno keywords were due to an article about MSN’s new blog service which censors certain words.

    Seems their server packed up for a while ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

Maybe porno searchers use FireFox because it’s more secure?

  14. I might have read it wrong, but if MDN is using Linux servers, THEN cats and dogs are also living together and there is mass hysteria.

I believe MDN’s take is a figure of speech, not a statement of fact.

  15. Call me an opinionated jerk, but who the hell cares whether MDN uses Linux or OS X Server? Aside from the kernal, the software you’d be using for webhosting is the same–php, apache, etc. On the non-UI end, Linux and OS X are both gloms of BSD stuff, gnu stuff, java, etc.
