Trekkies rejoice: Apple adds ‘Star Trek’ to iTunes Store
Wednesday, January 03, 2007 - 12:50 AM EDT

The voyage begins. Apple has added Star Trek: The Original Series to their iTunes Store.

The year is 2264, 201 years after man first traveled faster than the speed of light, and 113 years after the first voyage of the Enterprise NX-01, Captain James T. Kirk and his crew set forth in the constitution-class USS Enterprise.

So far, only season one's 29 episodes are available. Each episode is priced at iTunes Store's standard $1.99 per episode.

The entire season one is available for $56.99 (you'll save 72-cents there, buddy!)

Find Star Trek: The Original Series via iTunes Store here.

Well, beam me up slappy!

Jan 03, 07 - 01:57 am Comment from: coolfactor

This is a good step forward, but:

1) let's see some of this stuff outside the US (please come to Canada!)
2) the full-season price should be lower. Guess it's hard to please everyone, so may as well make money in the process.

I prefer Star Wars

Jan 03, 07 - 02:03 am Comment from: Capt. Kirk

Why does my breath smell like... you know.

Jan 03, 07 - 02:03 am Comment from: TowerTone

Kirk "Alright, men. Set phasers on Uhura, I meand stunning-er stun."

Bones "Dammit, Jim, get your knockers off her mind. I mean-Wait."

Spock "Gentlemen, that was shockingly nipple."

Jan 03, 07 - 02:09 am Comment from: montex

Schweet! Can B5 be far behind?

Jan 03, 07 - 02:10 am Comment from: Mr Bill

this price sort of stinks. You can get all three seasons of the original series on DVD for $110.86 at Barnes & Noble:

http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?ean=97360553871

Why I think this is great...and I might have indulged a bit of my inner geek if the price was right...but for less than best quality and without the ability to burn to a DVD...I'll pass. I'll just buy the DVDs and use handbrake if I want to watch it on my video iPod (which I don't have yet)

Jan 03, 07 - 02:14 am Comment from: Stab the Man (the surreal one)

Great. 5,000 years of technological advancement so people in the 21st Century can watch and drool over mid-20th Century dreams of what 23rd Century life might be like. Great. Just great. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. Oooh, like, I'm shivering.

Jan 03, 07 - 02:18 am Comment from: TowerTone

Uhra "Captain, I'm recieving a mating call from the bridge"
Jim "Open all frequently, er frequencies"
Scotty "Captain, are ya givin er all yew gite?"
Jim "Ahead, full thrusting"
Sulu "I'll take some of that!"
Bones "Bones?"
Spock "WTF?"

Jan 03, 07 - 02:22 am Comment from: Jake

The original Star Trek rocks! No, I'm not a Trekkie, but this series was FUN! The more recent versions are just B-O-R-I-N-G.

Jan 03, 07 - 02:39 am Comment from: DogGone

Luckily for Apple most Americans can't add otherwise nobody would buy this shit on iTunes.
That's probably why TV shows aren't available elsewhere, cos everyone would work out it makes more sense to buy the friggin DVD, rip it to whatever you want.

Jan 03, 07 - 02:43 am Comment from: Thomas

Are they the new re-mastered versions with CGI rendered starships and planets?

Jan 03, 07 - 03:06 am Comment from: CandTsmac

@ Thomas

What!!!!!!!!!!!

Jan 03, 07 - 03:06 am Comment from: me

Y'all's missin' the point.

ITMS better get a subscription (at least video) service going soon. People are just not going to buy a lot of this video. But a LOT of people WILL pay a monthly subscription for all this content. Apple will be making a big mistake to introduce "the iTV" and no subscription video (Netflix/cable replacement) service along with it!

"iTV" and the "iPhone" and $20 month? They'll have a steady stream of "lifelong" income.

Jan 03, 07 - 03:25 am Comment from: Gregg Thurman

The point everyone seems to be missing is that they are starting to add older content. There was a bunch of stuff from the '50s that was quite good. I'm anxious to see that added to iTunes.

Jan 03, 07 - 03:57 am Comment from: ken1w

> Are they the new re-mastered versions with CGI rendered starships and planets?

These would have to be original versions, since the "Star Trek Remastered" episodes are not being redone in series sequence, so they could not possibly have ALL the first season's episodes to sell on iTunes.

HEY HEY!!

I live in Belgium, for crying out loud! :-(

Jan 03, 07 - 04:38 am Comment from: wherever I go

Just downloaded Arena. It's the enhanced version. I haven't checked one of the episodes that hasn't been enhanced yet.

Jan 03, 07 - 04:39 am Comment from: LordRobin

Sigh. Each episode was over 50 minutes long. By comparison, the new Battlestar Galactica is under 44 minutes. That's 6+ more minutes of commercials. No wonder everyone is moving to DVRs. I can't stand it anymore.

Jan 03, 07 - 07:07 am Comment from: MPC Guy

ST:TNG is what I'd love to see. But... I've put off all movie purchases until HD versions come out.

Jan 03, 07 - 07:11 am Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

My mother was a trekkie -- well, not the obsessive kook type, but the kind who loved reading sci-fi, but couldn't stand the usual sci-fi crap dished out on TV during the 1960s -- Twilight Zone excluded.

As for Apple, the more complete the iTunes library, the stronger Apple becomes as a competitor. This is good.

Jan 03, 07 - 08:18 am Comment from: macca

the enhanced versions rule. the fx aren't too obtrusive, but they make the show waaaay better. way to go apple/paramount!

Jan 03, 07 - 09:25 am Comment from: iMac 800 mhz

"Me" .......you are wright!!! Not only for the reasons you stated but for the added storage space on my network.

Jan 03, 07 - 09:42 am Comment from: where I go

Unfortunately, City on the Edge of Forever is not the enhanced version.

However, Balance of Terror, The Menagerie Pt 1 & 2, Arena, Space Seed, The Corbomite Maneuver are enhanced. Those are the ones I downloaded so far.

This is great news! Oh wait carn`t buy them as l`m not in the US... When are they going to release TV shows and movies in itunes Australia... Please

Jan 03, 07 - 10:00 am Comment from: Adam W.

I understand that only the versions that have already been digitally enhanced have replaced the "older original versions" on iTunes. The episodes from the first season that have not yet been digitally enhanced are on iTunes also, but just are not the digitally enhanced versions.

Also I understand that all versions up on iTunes are the full, uncut versions (not the syndicated shortened, commercial break versions). Enjoy.

Hey It's supposed to be 101 years after the first man went light speed not 201. 2264-2163=101

As a bonus, every buyer of the entire season will also get the complete "Show Me the Money" starring William "Shat-tastic" Shatner! It will be downloaded automatically. You will NOT be able to interrupt it. It will reside in your hard drive for all eternity. It will play at every login. We KNEW you'd enjoy it!

Jan 03, 07 - 11:57 am Comment from: effwerd

There is no way we're going to have faster than light travel in 57 years. What a ridiculous concept. I predict this TV show will be cancelled in less than five years.

Jan 03, 07 - 11:59 am Comment from: Thought Process

"Season one's 29 episodes."

Ahhh, the good old days. Here it is January and nearly all the TV shows are already in re-runs. My TiVo is bored.

Jan 03, 07 - 12:17 pm Comment from: Macaholic

The remastered episodes are VERY well done. Without adding ANYTHING excessive to the original shows, the effects just look better, cleaner and are properly detailed. Of course, the picture is much cleaner (but some of the 60's lighting effects come out a bit more sharply than one might be used to).

Even the music has been re-recorded in stereo. The original music for TOS was for the most part prerecorded and then edited for each show as a tape library of music. I have checked out a few of the remastered ones and I believe that they have been using a copyist for each episode, taking the scores of the original cues (all entered into a computer using Sebelius or Finale), sequencing them in the same order as each show's edit of the original library tapes, orchestrating smoother transitions and then printing out the scores and parts and doing an ORIGINAL recording of the entire episode score that complies with the original edit of the pre-recorded tracks. The reason I say this is because the transitions between library edits on the remastered shows are perfectly seamless, with string decays etc. blending over from one "edit" of the library to the next "edit" of the library. I know edited music when I hear it (even well edited music), and I am sure that they're rerecording every episode's score smile

Jan 03, 07 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Macaholic

Hence, the fact that they're mixing re-mastered and original print shows together at the iTMS is TOTALLY BOGUS.

Not without the obligatory DRM getting slapped onto it, Clyde wink

Jan 03, 07 - 02:05 pm Comment from: Caleb

2264..... I think that's the same year when the highly anticipated iPhone comes out! :D

Jan 03, 07 - 02:42 pm Comment from: The Devil

I'm sorry, but these re-mastering schemes are just a way to get you to pay for what you've already bought again. Greedy, pointless. These shows were made in the sixties and it's really okay for them to look like they were, in my opinion. Mainstream entertainment is more in the toilet than ever if you ask me. Star Wars=PC? What kinda crack you smokin', boy? I've been using Apples Macs for nigh on 25 years, and I have never been that big a dweeb.

Jan 03, 07 - 02:52 pm Comment from: Macaholic

The re-mastered episodes are being aired on FREE TV and in HI-DEF. Unless you want to buy the DVD releases that will surely be released, or take your chances with this mishmash of original/re-mastered episodes at the iTMS, you can enjoy the re-mastered ones for free (as I have) thanks to your local broadcaster. If you have a PVR connected to your computer, then you'll have 'em forever.

Check out the episode rollout here:

And broadcasters here:

I figure that, given how Star Trek redefined science fiction and how legendary the original series is, the re-mastering is justified... it's up to each person as to whether or not they'll shell out for any for-fee distribution. Besides, as TVs get bigger and go hi-def, the original prints and effects are said to look like total shit. If there was ever a TV phenom that deserves the fresh coat of paint, it's Star Trek.

NEXT: Let's re-master Twilight Zone episodes :-D but PLEASE keep them black & white!

Sometimes it's just worth it to keep life simple...I'll pay the $2 and get my episodes from iTunes.

Count me in with the group of people who are very happy with the remastered Star Treks. It's not that the original Star Trek looked like crap, it's that HD TVs show its defects in a way 1960s-era TVs couldn't. They looked great then because their defects were invisible. (That, and before 1969 nobody had actually seen what a planet looks like from space.)

When Paramount took on scanning the original film for digital remastering (in 2K I think), cleaning up its effects was inevitable. But they have shown amazing restraint, and have tried to redo the original look of each effect, shot for shot, as closely as possible.

But shame on Apple (or Paramount, whoever is responsible) for not clearly marking which episodes are which. I bet that whenever iTunes goes HD, these episodes will look phenominal. (By 2163?)

effwerd said: There is no way we're going to have faster than light travel in 57 years. What a ridiculous concept. I predict this TV show will be cancelled in less than five years.

Keep in mind that, according to Star Trek, World War III already happened. The 1990s were a dark era for mankind with the Eugenics Wars pitting a small group of genetically enhanced and highly ambitious supermen against the rest of the world. By the late 90s, the smoothest Star Trek villain ever created had the entire world under his thumb. But thankfully, the free world rose up against him and drove his administration into hiding. He and his followers then fled Earth around the beginning of the 21st century in a small ship that was originally built for the manned exploration of our solar system, where they laid cryogenically frozen and drifting through space for some 250-odd years, before being discovered by the USS Enterprise in the episode Space Seed. (Apparantly being the leader of the world gives you access to prototype ships like this.)

Sounded very plausible in 1966.

But does that bother me? No more than the fact that a 1968 movie claimed that we'd have passenger space travel to the Moon, a manned scientific expidition to Jupiter, and a highly intelligent thinking machine with a sultry voice all by 2001. This is fantasy, plain and simple.

What happened to the episodes? I downloaded one last month , went back couple of days ago and today (2/14/07), and they are gone!
