Gang problems are nothing new and there are ways to deal with them. You need to destabilize them, then decentralize them, then disband them. This is done through gang recognition - admitting there is a gang problem which is not as easy for local governments to do as one would think - then use prevention and intervention techniques with a strong enforcement basis. There are many pitfalls along the way (I've seen them al in my years working gangs for the LAPD) including media and politicos who get soft and caught up in individual problems without looking at the situation as a whole. Its the gang that needs to be attacked, and the individual who needs to be saved --- not the other way around. And you cannot save everyone. Gangs are like a sinking ship with too few life rafts. A few will be saved, but most will get sucked down and spend their life in a misery of incarceration, drug addiction and drug induced mental illness. The iPod was probably the excuse for this particular fight: they would probably have found another pretext if there was no iPod, like someone didn't like the way that someone else looked at them, or someone insulted somebody's girlffriend/mother/sister.

This is a story of boys who only feel respected as part of a gang in a modern society that only respects wealth, celebrity and power (that's not a knock at the USA, it's the same story in much of western Europe especially in deprived urban centres).

That's another issue that should be put before Obama since he'll probably have the guts to deal with it. Even if it takes the military, gang task forces should be in all states to head this cancer off early. If these kinds of violent crimes are being committed, why aren't we fighting these gangs tooth and nail immediately? They are organized crime in a violent unorganized way which is pathetic to law enforcement and real organized crime which operates in at least a more civilized manner. Simple - 2 weeks of curfew, the hoods won't obey, so you arrest them, and deport them. It would at least put a giant monkey wrench in their plans with half their members gone. The difference is most of the Irish, Italians, Jews etc. came over LEGALLY. For the most part they came here to start a new GOOD life.

They didn't come here as gangs. They didn't skirt the law, hike into the mountains, and kill each-other over trinkets. And they didn't expect (or get) favors when they did do stupid things. There is absolutely no comparison between legal immigrants and these losers.

Anyway, as fscked up as America is, it's still about the only country that people try to break INTO! Something to think about.

Wow, You know every time I look at the comments section I leave just a little bit more disappointed about the Mac community. I always expect an air of elitism, and I'm used to it. However, the racism that's coming off from a lot of you is disgusting.
Gangs are a part of life in every country in the world. However, look in every country and they're almost always made up of an massively immigrating group. It just happens naturally due to the conditions of poverty, isolation, and low opportunities. It happened with the Italians and Irish many decades ago.
Its happening with Latino's and South-East Asians now. There is nothing inherently defective or bad about these people. The majority of any group are good, law-abiding citizens.
But the majority doesn't accept that. The majority want a scape goat to blame the ills of society on (ya know kind of how Hitler did with the Jews). It makes them feel better about themselves, the fact that they can have someone to look down on, call names, and blame.
Do you not realize the inherent injustice involved in blaming any person for the actions of a small number of their group. And yes, it is a small number. The majority of all Latinos and South-East Asians in the United States are citizens. The majority of them obey the law.
That aside, what bothers you so much about massive immigration (legal or illegal) is fear. Fear that you'll no longer be the majority. A fear that being a WASP won't have the innumberable advantages it has nowadays. That's all that's going on in those close minded little heads of yours.
The funny thing is, without illegal immigrants the majority of Americans would be worse off. By filling up lower-paying jobs with other people, you create more spaces at the top. No matter how poor a person is, at one point or another in their lives they're going to need doctors, dentists, nurses, lawyers, policemen, firefighters, ect...
Do you not see how much better off you are with the good opportunities opening up for you?
And please, don't point to that BS about them coming here to use up all of your gov't services. The US is not a socialist utopia that illegals can leach off of, aside from what most of you think. These people work hard at sh!tty jobs for the vast majority of their lives. They pay taxes, and take very little in return, because if you are illegal why in the hell would you risk getting deported cause you want to get a few food stamps. The risk is definitely not worth the reward. Just think about it before you spout off whatever Fox News and Lou Dobbs tell you.

You do know that illegal immigration occurs in every industrialized country in the world. In fact, in terms of per capita illegal immigration, the United States is behind quite a few countries in Europe. Our primary education system and student loan industry has done a great job in deteriorating the "Land of Opportunity."
One more thing, how in the hell do any of you know if these stupid kids are legal, illegal, or children of illegal. It's racist to assume things like this. If you're White, how would you feel if a story came up saying: Executive involved in Corporate Scandal, and someone commented "Damn, white people are ruining this country." You didn't do anything, but you and your entire group are blamed for the actions of small few. It's wrong. Develop some empathy and realize how racism is inherently evil.

Scrap that sentence about knowing the kid's immigration status. I didn't notice that in the story, but it doesn't change the validity of the rest of the argument.

What exactly was racist about my post? You should really read over it again and tell me. If it's the comment in the last section, I was merely giving an example of how it is wrong to make generalizations about groups over the actions of a small few.
Now, what I said about majorities can be applied to any relatively homogenous society experiencing massive immigration. Xenophobia is rooted in the fear of any majority losing its cultural, economic, and political dominance.
Also, you think I hate "Whitey"? OK, I don't really know what gives you that idea. I might hate some people who might happen to be White, Black, Asian, or Brown, but no, I don't think it would be right for me to hate all White people for the close-mindedness of a very vocal few, like you specifically.
