U.S. Energy Secretary: Apple quitting U.S. Chamber of Commerce over climate change is ‘wonderful’
Friday, October 09, 2009 - 12:04 PM EDT

"U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said he applauds companies that have quit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over disagreement with the business group's climate change policy," Tom Doggett reports for Reuters.

"'I think it's wonderful,' Chu told reporters at a solar energy event on the National Mall," Doggett reports. "He said other companies should quit the group because the Chamber does not fully recognize the business possibilities in taking aggressive action on climate."

"On Monday, Apple Inc. resigned from the chamber while last month three big power utilities, Exelon Corp, PG&E Corp and PNM Resources Inc, said they were leaving the chamber," Doggett reports. "Other companies have criticized the chamber, which has pushed for public hearings to challenge the scientific evidence of man-made climate change."

Doggett reports, "The chamber has said it favors 'mainstream, common sense views' on climate change but opposes a climate bill that the House of Representatives narrowly passed in June."

Full article here.

The Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal reports, "The head of the [U.S. Chamber of Commerce], however, renewed his criticism of the resignations, saying it was the victim of an organized campaign by environmentalists. He said Apple and others have misstated the chamber's position. 'It's pretty clear because we've heard it from our own companies that a number of environmental groups are trying to apply some pressure on Chamber companies to apply pressure on us to change our views,' Chamber President Thomas Donohue said at a press conference."

"Other companies have criticized the chamber, which has pushed for public hearings to challenge the scientific evidence of man-made climate change."

What are they challenging the scientific evidence with? Economic evidence? Legal evidence? What?

Oct 09, 09 - 12:13 pm Comment from: finelinebob

Personal, anecdotal evidence.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:15 pm Comment from: M

probably REAL evidence--rather than what the b#ll$h%t global warming scam posse tries to foist upon us. GW is a $cam folks

Glenbeckidence.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:18 pm Comment from: M

btw--if you're so sure of the standing GW 'evidence'--what's the harm in having public hearings? Seems GW liars would have their platform. Pretty telling.

M. You're an idiot. You probably believe in Creationism, Homeopathy, and alien abductions.

The scientific evidence for human caused Global Warming is solid. Your Fox News/Google university education is an embarrassment.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:21 pm Comment from: LeftCoastDude

M. You idiot. Science is not performed and analyzed by "public hearings." It is done through a process of experimentation, peer review and publication. But your Fox News intellect is perhaps confused by real science.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:21 pm Comment from: ron

GW is a scam. It's nature. GWB was also a scam, he was not a natural conservative. Long live Glenn.

I also applaud Apple for standing behind Steven Chu and 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama.

President Obama, Nobel laureate, is on a mission to bring man-made climate change to a halt. His leadership will hopefully inspire other countries to follow suit with their own campaigns to end global warming.

Wow. Just wow. This is one of the most ignorant things I've ever read.

You don't put science on trial for a jury to decide its outcome. That's beyond ludicrous.

If we're going to do that for climate change, let's similarly do it for the theory of relativity, cell theory, germ theory, atomic theory, quantum theory, etc. LOL. I'd love to see quantum theory put on trial and see how well the lawyers and juries understand it. LOL!

Oct 09, 09 - 12:34 pm Comment from: M

but maybe they should wait to filate Obama AFTER he's actually achieved something..just a thought

Oct 09, 09 - 12:38 pm Comment from: M

so we should just take the a few scientists word for it? How about the ones who are declaring it junk science? I guess they should be silenced because they don't hold your political viewpoint? Science is ALL ABOUT challenging theory. Not accepting only what the media wants to have us believe..

Scopes trial.

@R2
Actually (and finally) President Obama is THE FIRST american president who IS INSPIRED by few countries who allready took measures concirning climat. President Obama is the first smart enough president to be aware of the problems most american wanted to williingly ignore and the first to act in the right direction. President Obama is the first american President who knows the depth of US delay and lag in many matters, and dares to share it publicly (risking his life because of dummy blinds who'd like to having rather dead!).

Oct 09, 09 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

@M

I've chased down the credentials of some of those "scientists" who have declared GW junk science. They've been associated with big right-wing think tanks funded by big energy. In big red states. And those are the ones who are "the few". The vast majority of real scientists line up on the side of GW. Now who's trying to scam who?

@Rob,

Evolutionary science has already been put on trial. Fortunately, it's won so far. When evolution loses, all the rest you mention will be next.

Welcome to the Fundamentalist Lunatic Right Wing Dark Ages, everyone.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:53 pm Comment from: jeffr

Hey guy's enough arguing the science, this is about cap and trade which does nothing except increase (tax) your energy costs. the issue is 'if' you are wholly concerned with GW then great, but how does making me pay more help?

Oct 09, 09 - 12:57 pm Comment from: Chapleau

There is no "Rock Solid Evidence" of Man Made GW or Man Made CC or what ever they are spinning it as now. Climate is always changing. It's a big scam to tax you people to death and control your lives. My opinions have nothing to do with Beck or Limbaugh or Fox News either, so don't even say it.

Oct 09, 09 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Dallasm

"so we should just take the a few scientists word for it? How about the ones who are declaring it junk science?"

Here is a good list of the 'few scientists' that have found empirical evidence of global warming:

http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q="Global+Warming"++&hl=en&btnG=Search&lr=lang_en

These are not bloggers, or newspapers, or TV talking heads. These are real scientists writing for real scientific journals. There is more than enough evidence than any reasonable thoughtful person could ever need. The theory is well examined and has been studied by scientists from every angle.

If there are scientists that declare it to be 'Junk Science' they are not publishing their findings.

Oct 09, 09 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Raymond in DC

R2 writes, "President Obama, Nobel laureate, is on a mission to bring man-made climate change to a halt. His leadership will hopefully inspire other countries to follow suit with their own campaigns to end global warming."

Oh, please! Put down that Kool-Aid. Nominations closed on Feb 1, while O was only sworn into office on January 20. Wow, those must have been 10 phenomenally productive days!. In truth, the Peace prize has always been political, reflecting policies the Norwegians favor at the moment. Kissinger and Arafat also won it. Obama won it just for being Obama and not George Bush.

As to ending global warming, the Waxman-Markey bill will do no such thing. It is a poorly constructed political document that will, over ten years, transfer a trillion dollars out of consumer pockets to favored interests and government coffers (to support increased spending). Most of the resulting CO-2 reductions will come from the resulting economic slowdown.

Oct 09, 09 - 01:03 pm Comment from: AppleJack

Even if Barack Obama is never actually able to succeed in his dreams, at least for now he has changed the world's opinion about the U.S. and its goals.

I, for one, hope his dreams are the ones he spoke of in his campaign. . . . And I hope he is successful beyond all our dreams.

Hey Global Warming is a fact. No one can debate it.

Glaciers once cover half of North America- been to Yosmite?

The earth has warmed and cooled long before man could even click stones together. For VARIOUS reasons.

The main question to ask is how do we stop a planet- get it- A PLANET- from doing anything on a scale this large. If, it is true and it is man made- then it will take centuries to unwind and it will need to go back to an farming life- dump modern! How many are willing to do this?

Now, the big question! What is the temperture range that the countries are to be set at? Is America set to keep it's temperture at the best possible one. And the straving dry desert in Africa at the same temperture and rain fall?

If you can control the enviroment you must know which are to be the prefered countries that will recieve the best tempertures. What are these countries?
If you go back in history to the time of global warming, it was lush, rained on a global scale, and was rich in life. Just before global cooling killed most species, limited planet growth, declined oxygen production, and life became harder. Dinosaurs were large because the level of oxygen was in such amounts that life could be supersized= a lot of plant life.

Global warming bad? Or do we live in a slice of time that we think is normal!?

Think, be critical and look back in the history of the planet.

My two cents

Oct 09, 09 - 01:32 pm Comment from: fredo

@jeffr

Cap and trade would reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by imposing a cap on total allowable emissions from major U.S. sources, then reducing that cap year by year.

Because greenhouse gases cause global warming, the idea (solidly supported by scientific evidence) is that emitting fewer greenhouse gases would cause less global warming.

Because the cap would come down slowly, and because more innovative companies could make money by selling the allowances they no longer need to environmental laggards, the economy would be able to transition relatively smoothly to lower-carbon production (e.g. natgas and renewables rather than coal for electricity; greater efficiency; etc).

Believe it or not, the goal of cap and trade is to reduce GW, not to increase your electric bill for no reason. BTW, how much is your electric bill anyway? $50 a month? $75? Even if it does go up, are you seriously going to tell me you couldn't afford a couple more bucks on your electric bill to leave your grandchildren a stable food supply and a New York City that's not 10 feet underwater?

FYI, I buy 100% renewable electricity already, voluntarily... it has increased my electric bill by... wait... OOOOOOOHHH about $6 per month. Damn that Light Switch Tax, I pretty much can't afford that extra bag of Cheetos now! Socialism!

Global warming or no global warming, what the heck is wrong with keep our planet clean and green?

Oct 09, 09 - 02:30 pm Comment from: Bizarro Jeff

LOL! I LAUGH at anyone who turns climate change issues into a political issue. You make me laugh. And you make me sad. As MacPatty said, global warming or no global warming, what is wrong with keeping our planet as clean and green as possible. Even if you could prove unequivocally that global warming doesn't exist, it would not mean that it was suddenly okay to pollute to your heart's content.

Oct 09, 09 - 02:32 pm Comment from: Henry

Clean yes. Green is based on favorable temperture and water. Green will be the function of mother nature.

Yes on clean.
Nature covers the green.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu is a Nobel Prize winner, winning the Prize in Physics along with with Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William Daniel Phillips.

A real scientist as Energy Secretary - that's a refreshing change from the political hacks who have occupied the post previously, from both parties.

Oct 09, 09 - 02:40 pm Comment from: Bizarro Jeff

The level of clean can impact the green, though, Henry. Witness the toxicity of fresh-water bodies due to pollution and the negative impact that has on those ecosystems and the plants, fauna and animals living in them.

You do not support that goal.

And you will do, whatever you can, to stop him.

What are you? I am glad you do not represent America.

Dead wrong.

If you claim AGW is "a big scam," then you better be able to back it up. That means refuting each and every one of these 700 peer reviewed publications providing evidence for AGW.

@ Bizarro Jeff

Yes, that is true. But human life spans are not the core of a global weather or ecological system.

No matter how badly the surface, air, water, etc. is contaminted- the planet works on billion of years. Most humans consider decades and research data in the hundreds of years.

In a million years the most polluted area on the planet will be cleaned and will be uses by nature. This will be again green.

Our planet is indestructible to humans. It has survives global killing meteors, super valcancos, and every event never known.

The Mantra should be- Save our species, keep the planet in balance.

Green is and will be mother nature. No human force will ever destory this rock.

As HENRY said- nature is the greater force. Man is a small temporary speck that will be erased by suduction of the crust. No trace will be found as the earth recycles ALL the surface.

I think we should have public hearings to debate whether or not the world is flat. Feels flat to you, doesn't it? I drop a marble on the floor and it doesn't move. It just sits there. And all my friends say the same thing.

Now, who am I expected to believe? A bunch of eggheads at some research lab somewhere, or the common-sense knowhow of all my friends and THEIR friends??

The Earth is flat. It's as obvious as my flat head.
