Using Apple’s iPod Sport Kit with non-Nike shoes
Monday, July 17, 2006 - 10:02 AM EST

"When the Nike+iPod Sport Kit was announced, I was really excited about being able to track my running progress with my iPod nano. I was not excited, however, by the thought of having to switch to Nike running shoes to use it," Podophile reports.

"The notch that’s cut into Nike’s new shoes for the transmitter is a brilliant idea, but I don’t want to sacrifice the support and comfort I get from my trusty Saucony Hurricanes. Since the Sport Kit transmitter is just an accelerometer, I figured there had to be an easy way to attach it to my shoe laces," Podophile reports.

"Well, my Nike+iPod kit arrived yeserday and without wasting any time, I tucked the transmitter under my laces and jumped on the treadmill. Everything seemed to work just fine, and the transmitter hardly shifted during my 10 minute trial run. But I knew that If I wanted to run outdoors for long distances, I’d need to come up with a more secure solution," Podophile reports.

Will it work with Converse?

Jul 17, 06 - 09:26 am Comment from: Duh...

It works with adidas shoes too?

For those who were wondering, it also works if you tape it to your foot and run barefoot.

How about bicycling, does it work for cycling? If it did you'd think Lance would've been on a bicycle.

I've got one of those perpetual-motion bird things that dips into a cup of water. If I attach the iPod thing to it, I can log miles while sitting on the couch eating chips and watching G4.

You know what is really funny.... Niketown sells a thing called a shoe wallet that you can just put the sensor in and attach to your laces $29.. No velcro required.

Nike is the only manufacturer that has created a hole in their shoe to fit the device. It should work with any shoe if you are willing to velcro or duct tape it to your shoe or ankle.

I expect one of the iPod accessory makers will market a similar gizmo. This is great, because that will expand the market for the device beyond the Nike owners. I can't imagine that such a gizmo has to cost more than $5.

I don't think it'll work with rollerblades or your bike. The action used in those activities is much more fluid than running. You can also coast. In blading, your sideways movement gives you more power than going straight forward. For those, however, you should try the Timex Ironman series watches that have GPS. They tell you speed & distance up to 1/1000 of a mile. I got 2 on woot.com for about $80 each.

"How about bicycling, does it work for cycling?"

Not well.

Essentially, what these things do is they count the number of "impacts" (ie, your foot hitting the ground). My roomate has one and it works poorly with a bicycle because there's no real "impact."

Generally, I wouldn't wear one of these while bicycling anyway.
