Verizon CEO: We’re interested in iPhone, ball entirely in Apple’s court
Monday, October 26, 2009 - 12:17 PM EST

Apple Online Store "Verizon Wireless takes jabs at the iPhone in its Droid advertising, but it said Monday that it’s still interested in selling the popular device," Andrew LaVallee blogs for The Wall Street Journal.

LaVallee reports, "In fact, it’s not up to the carrier, suggested Ivan Seidenberg, chief executive of Verizon Communications. 'This is a decision that is exclusively in Apple’s court,' he said during Verizon’s third-quarter earnings call. 'We obviously would be interested at any point in the future they thought it would make sense for them to have us as a partner. And so we will leave it with them on that score.'"

LaVallee reports, "'What they have done has been successful, so we have to sit back and give them credit for that,' he said. 'Our view is to broaden the base of choice for customers, and hopefully along the way, Apple, as well as others, will decide to jump on the bandwagon.'Rival carrier AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S."

Shoulda, coulda, woulda... Verizon spurned them now they want them? Eat dirt Verizon!

Oct 26, 09 - 11:25 am Comment from: MacNScott

They had their chance and blew it. Now that they are getting their rear ends handed to them they are "interested". I would like to see Apple end the exclusive deal, but Verizon would be the last one I would offer it to.

Just saying...

Now he says choice. Sounds like Ballmer to me.

iPhone on Verizon's dirt old network??? Enough said.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:31 am Comment from: breeze

Verizon has started a negative ad campaign against iPhone and Apple...Do they really think that that's the way to change things???

Even if Apple drops exclusivity with ATT, I'd bet Verizon get the big middle finger for their attitude coupled with their initial arrogance.

They had their chance and blew it. They might have had a second chance, but they preferred the low road.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:32 am Comment from: me

CDMA has some advantages. I believe Verizon will have problems when they go GSM. The coverage is less so they will need lots more towers. Just because more people use GSM, that doesn't necessarily make it better (think windows).

Oct 26, 09 - 11:33 am Comment from: Jay

If Verizon thinks that Apple is going to jump on their bandwagon they are dumber than I thought. Apple will try to get their phone on T-Mobile or some other carrier before they go to Verizon. Verizon still needs to loose a few more customers before they get their head out of their rears. They, like a lot of anal-ists, think an iPhone killer will show up eventually, but they are all wrong. The Droid phone will sell, but will not have the success for Verizon that the iPhone would. Verizon management is like the music industry management, clueless.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:35 am Comment from: Tt

Verizon is not going gsm, and research shows CDMA has more top end potential than gsm

Oct 26, 09 - 11:40 am Comment from: KingMel

Based on their Droid ad and "the ball is in Apple's court" attitude, it does not appear to me that the situation has substantially changed from a few years ago (other than AT&T gaining millions of new high dollar customers).

This is clearly an attempt to manipulate public perception of Verizon as the "good guy" willing to abolish that nasty old (lucrative) AT&T exclusivity for the benefit of everyone (especially Verizon). Droid is vaporware at this point as far as I can tell. Unless Droid comes through in a big way (unlike the Pre), Verizon is in a very weak position. If Droid hits it big, then Apple will finally might have some worthy competition on its hands.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:42 am Comment from: HMCIV

I saw the iDon't Droid commercials. Verizon is fine. They have nothing to fear except fear itself... and bankruptcy.

1. Fear
2. Bankruptcy
3. Stockholder revolt.

Those are the only things Verizon has to fear... along with epic failure.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:43 am Comment from: Balls

Balls in their court doesn’t mean they’ve given everything and Apple’s standing in the way. It means they’ve given everything they are WILLING to give, and Apple can take it or leave it. Clever how they can make it sound like Apple alone is the barrier!

Example: We use the wrong network standards so you’d need a whole different phone model. We’ll pay you half what AT&T;does. Take it or leave it. Ball’s in your court, Apple!

Piss on em. Let them eat precake

Oct 26, 09 - 11:45 am Comment from: MidWest Mac

Okay, Apple. This is simple: Take out the GSM guts and put in some CDMA guts. Then sell it to Verizon.

People aren't stupid. I'll know that I can't use it overseas. I don't care. Me wants an iPhone!

Oct 26, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: G4Dualie

This is business decision, and not personal.

Verizon rejected Apple out of ignorance.

Jobs knew he was standing on the threshold of a revolution and the price to play was too dear for Verizon.

Imagine how different history might have been had Verizon agreed to the terms?

What everyone needs to realize is that the iPhone system transcends the carrier's meme of the telephone, which is quite evident in AT&T;'s lack of data infrastructure.

The iPhone will be available on every carrier in a couple of years. In the meantime, isn't about time for Apple to make the OS available for all smartphones?

Oct 26, 09 - 11:46 am Comment from: LeftCoastDude

Until the rest of the world uses CDMA, which isn't going to happen given the investment in the infrastructure, Verizon is just going to be an obscure US company (to the rest of the world). I personally don't care if the iPhone is sold through Verizon (and given Verizon's history with technology, I can't see them opening the floodgates to the iPhone paradigm of cell phones, in that the carrier is just a commodity and the phone is what matters). But Apple needs to stay with ATT, because I need international coverage.

@me. GSM may not be better in some ways, but it is better in others. It isn't like Windows, which has some good points, but a lot of bad ones. Also GSM is a standard, like Firewire or USB, it is not owned by one company. There is a lot of competition between companies that develop GSM products, whether it's phones, switches, or whatever. GSM and CDMA are essentially equivalent on quality (with advantages and disadvantages of each). That GSM is the worldwide standard for mobile phones makes it the hands down winner. CDMA is going to be moved aside over time, because the US market, though big, cannot support the massive R&D;required to move mobile phones into 4G, 5G, and whatever comes down the road. It's a matter of economics. The costs of the next GSM technology is spread over several billion users. CDMA is spread over some 70 million users in the US (and a couple of other countries)

Oct 26, 09 - 11:47 am Comment from: hairbo

I think this is code for "we're not upgrading our entire infrastructure just for the iPhone. You want to be on Verizon, you need to make a phone that runs on our network."

Somehow, I just can't quite believe Apple will make a version that runs on Verizon's network--too confusing for the customer. "Do you want the AT&T;version of the phone, or the Verizon version of the phone? Oh, and if you ever want to switch carriers, you need to buy a new phone." Very un-Apple.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:49 am Comment from: Shinobi

How does that crow taste Verizon?

I guess blackberry, android, and palm are no match for the iPhone, huh?

If Apple eventually partners with Verizon, then they might as well do Sprint as well. I believe they both have cdma based networks.

Oct 26, 09 - 11:51 am Comment from: iStepchild

If he really meant it, he would have come totally clean and said Verizon made a mistake not getting on board with the iPhone.
Michael Dell has also stated he would love to put OS X on a Dell machine.
Everybody want to be a magnet on Apple's refrigerator now that Apple is proven successful amidst their proven long-term vision for what consumers need.
Ballmer is solely about fund-gaining...Jobs is about invention and changing the world...the funds always follow.

Oct 26, 09 - 12:15 pm Comment from: NGC598

Huh? It is not a carrier issue that the iPhone is not on the Verzion network?

Hey, you turned it down! What?

Next Verizon will be saying that they give their customers a choice by allowing features and innovation!

Yea, like actually backing up one of their cell phones to one's own computer and not on their stupid servers!

But it is nice that this locked in agreement is beating the hell out of them in the PR side. Good- they need it.

Oct 26, 09 - 12:21 pm Comment from: breeze

and when no one can compete or come close in innovation, they all decide that the best way to go is to "take Apple apart" (what a fart)...

Thus the Pystar lame effort to challenge/ force Apple's IP out of it's control, the Eric Schmidt insider ( board member) analysis that brought Google to chrome and android, and MS's chicken with no head recent blitz, to name some only.

Apple and Jobs learned their lesson well years ago and even if the whole industry tries to pry it's IP from them Apple knows how to stay it's course and keep it's ever loyal users happy, satisfied, and ahead of the curve. They're just going to have to do their homework and excel (no pun intended) on their own.

Oct 26, 09 - 12:40 pm Comment from: SamLowry

From what I see, CDMA is a trainwreck.

Oct 26, 09 - 12:57 pm Comment from: NCMacMan

Uh, I think you're too late Verizon. You should have jumped on the opportunity when you had it.

Now don't you feel stupid in doing so? Verizon rejecting Apple and the iPhone is now one of the top 10 business snafus in history.

Oct 26, 09 - 01:01 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

Hmmm, CDMA works. But I just do not see Apple making a CDMA phone. 4G maybe.

Actually it now looks like 4G is the next US standard and maybe for the world. So in 2-3 years, when Verizon has their 4G network up and running, We will see.

Unless Verizon makes you use VCast to buy your music, etc.

Just a thought.

Oct 26, 09 - 01:14 pm Comment from: Original Jake

The iDon't commercials smell of FEAR and DESPERATION on the part of Verizon. Between the iDon't trash-talking and the "ball's in their court" PR nonsense, sounds like the Verizon CEO is still an A$$ and would make a bad partner. It's in Apple's interest to get on the Verizon network, but Apple shouldn't give them any special deals. When Apple is ready, they should offer Verizon the same financial terms as everyone else.
BTW, the investment required to create a CDMA iPhone is miniscule compared to the financial return. Apple has publicly stated that they are in an exclusive arrangement w/ATT at the moment, so it is simply not an option right now. It may also be that Verizon is insisting on their typical requirements for VCast and limiting various phone features; in that case, it'll be a cold day in Hell before they get it.

Oct 26, 09 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

When he says, "jump on the bandwagon" Seidenberg is not saying that Verizon will change its ways. He's saying that iPhone will have to follow Verizon's way of crippling phones so that they can sell addons like VCast, etc.

Oct 26, 09 - 03:15 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

@Balls
Right you rar! (was today talk like a pirate day? I was thinkin it was...)

Oct 26, 09 - 03:17 pm Comment from: Mark Texas

You people totally don't read between the lines on this. This is Verizon's way of telling Apple:

"You know our terms and what you have to give up so take it or leave it".

The likely of a Verizon iPhone is nill until 2012 if not later. Apple would give up App revenue / fat sub per device at a min.

At this point just stay with at&t;as the other stateside choices are lousy - TMo has next to no 3G so if you think data speeds are bad now ... and Sprint is ok but again has spotty coverage.

Oct 26, 09 - 03:20 pm Comment from: therepguy

i wish that T-Mobile was also interested in iPhone!

Oct 26, 09 - 03:33 pm Comment from: R

Well, Apple was willing to go with Verizon a few years or so ago. Verizon was on CDMA then and now, right? So why not go with Verizon now with CDMA?

Oct 26, 09 - 03:47 pm Comment from: iLuvMyMacs

I really like my iPhone; no- I really LOVE my iPhone... I have the original 1st gen- it works great but I'm not upgrading- not yet. I HATE AT&T;, they are going to drive me away from iPhone if this Droid thing is even close to what an iPhone does for me now. I hate even typing these words but the ultimate app is being able to make and receive phone calls. AT&T;just ain't cuttin here in New Hampshire. I'm hoping Steve can hammer something out with Verizon- I'd even be willing to pay more.

Oct 26, 09 - 03:55 pm Comment from: Fat Basterd

I continue to be amused by people who think that because Apple went to Verizon "first", they were somehow Apple's top choice. Apple had every intention of exploring all their options and potential partners. The fact that Verizon was "first" may be more a matter of them being able to schedule a meeting with Jobs before ATT could, or perhaps their corporate office was closer.

I'm also skeptical that Verizon was anything more than a last-ditch option, if even that. Apple needed negotiating leverage, and simply going to one carrier and saying "We want you, and exclusively. What do you say?" isn't the way to get the upper hand. Apple had plans to go world-wide, the rest of the world is GSM, and I think ultimately they knew it would either have to be ATT in the US, or buying access to the bandwidth and serving as the carrier themselves, much like what the smaller telcos do.

Oct 26, 09 - 05:06 pm Comment from: MidWest Mac

Is there such thing as a Verizon fanboy? Geez.

People in the metro areas don't understand the limited options we've got here in my part of the country. ATnT and T-Mobile — the only GSM carriers in the US — haven't invested their networks here.

For me, it's Verizon and a few other also-rans to choose from.

That's why the iPhone as a CDMA option makes sense in the U.S. It would reach millions of us who are left out in the cold currently. But, if you're the type of customer that travels with their phone overseas, ATnT would still be the carrier for you.

I just don't see why Apple can't turn on an assembly line that pops CDMA receivers in a few million phones. If I'm not mistaken, that'd lead to a A FEW MILLION SALES.

I'll be near the front of the line.

Oct 26, 09 - 05:10 pm Comment from: XJMPasadena CA.

@leftcoastdude

gsm and CDMA are gonna be replaced by new technology WIMAX!!!

Oct 26, 09 - 05:38 pm Comment from: m159

I regretfully left Verizon, but really had no choice. The iPhone is a non-negotiable requirement, and I was willing to accept a poorer network in exchange for a transcendently useful device. I think that speaks for a lot of people.

It would be possible to make a CDMA version of the iPhone.

If Verizon is "interested" that better mean they are willing to drop their control over the iPhone's full functionality, which apparently was the sticking point in the first place.

Oct 26, 09 - 07:05 pm Comment from: Bartleby

While it would be simple to rip out the GSM guts and slap in CDMA guts, that's just another chipset for Apple to deal with licensing for a relatively small market (when compared to the rest of the world). But this was probably not the real issue. My guess is that Apple said no to VCAST and all of Verizon's software intrusions. Apple will not compromise with their hardware or software. This is why Apple will NEVER license the OS to anyone. It will only run on the hardware that it was designed to run on. And that's part of what makes it so much better than all the competition.

Oct 26, 09 - 09:03 pm Comment from: Mario

I live in the New York area and here AT&T;coverage sucks. I've had a 1st gen iPhone for 18 months and I am not upgrading. I've talked to many people (non technical, no fanboys) and they would love to get an iPhone but only when it's on Verizon. Apple is losing huge market share and potential dominance by refusing to work with Verizon.

Steve Jobs: "Can you hear me now?"

Oct 27, 09 - 01:26 am Comment from: Algr

@ jbooo:

Verizon has been eating dirt for a while now - sure they made a mistake, but why punish them forever. Even if there had to be a separate iPhone model, the ability to choose would benefit Apple's customers (and hence Apple) dramatically.

BTW, just how big are those chips? Is a phone that works with both standards really impossible?
