Really, who cares if it does?

Even if you can, it would be a pain.

Software won't work half the time, drivers and other issues.

It's nothing to be relied upon, updates will break it and you'll have to wait for the cracks before running your programs.

So sorry, your just going to have to pay the Microsoft tax if you want to run their programs.

Or just get a Vista machine and be done with it.

Vista will address the security and ascetics, all the developers will code for it.

Mar 15, 06 - 05:50 pm Comment from: andy

post announced vista not to support HD media straight away, hahaha, what do they do there? other than nothing, efi, ,net, viruses in beta vistas etc etc

Now if I can find a download and burn a cd, then I can finally switch my Mac to a Windows PC.

I bought this Mac and then realized I was a outcast from the rest of the computing world.

Thanks MDN!

Mar 15, 06 - 05:59 pm Comment from: HurryUp!

Now, Windows is truly everywhere.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Liam

Paul - Vista will be stripped down to the bare minimum to get it to market... if it hasn't already been stipped wink

Did you just mention Vista & Security in the same sentence... I blew tea out of my nose with laughter when I read that

As for whether the video is real or not - seems real to me...

Mar 15, 06 - 06:05 pm Comment from: Spark

Looks real to me. Looks like the typical setup routine.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:09 pm Comment from: Ashvillian

Liam,

Mac OS X hasn't had such a great security track record either.

In fact, it's quite dismal. So far in the short time Mac OS X has been out there is more security issues than the entire history of pre-Mac OS X.

With Mac OS X and Vista security being about the same, I'll take Vista because there will be more programs written for it.

Face it, Apple is gouging as much money from it's user base as possible before Vista arrives.

Apple knows they are finished.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:13 pm Comment from: W Baker

What is the incessant fascination with booting Windows on a Mac? Why do these folks seem hell-bent on putting a mouse and wheel inside an iMac?

Are these the same sort of people who go out and buy an expensive European sports car and start ripping out the engine and drive train in favor of their Chevy small blocks and other bits and pieces laying around the front yard?

Some people genuinely have too much time and apparently too much money on their hands.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:16 pm Comment from: R

M$, however, is quite a lumbering giant. Innovation, user experience, and the-things-not-yet-done keep Apple in my favor.

Notice how prices on iPods have come down and down over time. Apple is not opposed to lower prices, but they also know that people are willing to pay. Economies of scale play in here, too.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:19 pm Comment from: DCchesterUK

keep your dirty pox ridden system off my macs.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Rhomboid

If it takes that long to boot, it's a bigger dog than ME was. I'm up and running in less than 30 seconds on my iMac, and that's with startup items to boot first.

"In fact, it's quite dismal. So far in the short time Mac OS X has been out there is more security issues than the entire history of pre-Mac OS X."

What security issues???? They had some updates that has affected NO ONE!!! These updates come out, things move on. End of story! If you want to go with MS, have at it. Live in mediocrity and be happy for what it is.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

Does anyone laughing at Vista remember an operating system called Copeland?

Mar 15, 06 - 06:27 pm Comment from: Emil

Nice! now one can use programs that were only written for (insert windows marketshare here..what shall we say? 80%?) of the people!

Only ignorant people would question the relevance of this. It makes the decision much easier for potential switchers as well.

Try to understand that there are LOADS of software that your precious Mac can't run and if you have to use it, then you're stuck with windows (shudder!)

Not to mention games wink

Looking forward to running Windows on the intel based powermacs just to play games (with the network card disabled mind you!).

Mar 15, 06 - 06:28 pm Comment from: THE MAC GOD

I think it's real... it would be damn difficult to track that correctly the way he's moving it around.

Unless, of course, he captured a windows machine doing all that and is just playing a full screen video in QT.

Who knows? We'll find out soon enough.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:32 pm Comment from: Emil

Tommy Boy, that's what apple was like in Jobs' absence or what M$ is like in Gates' presence smile

Mar 15, 06 - 06:39 pm Comment from: Ashvillian

What security issues?

Why these of course, just scroll down and take a nice long look.

http://secunia.com/product/96/

It's like this, if you haven't completely erased your hard drive from the Tiger install disk, fresh installed/updated everything and started over with brand new created files, your machine could be totally compromised.

Software updates alone won't do, because previous intrusions have altered the system, applications and files (to run a hidden app)

Unless your wise enough to examine the code of all your old files, you must consider these files compromised.

You may double click them and they will open their respective app like normal, but they can also install something.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:43 pm Comment from: clyde

IT'S A FAKE!!! How can I tell? It didn't lock up and have to be rebooted!!!

Mar 15, 06 - 06:43 pm Comment from: Greg

PC's are cheap as chips. Just get a PC. Why would you buy an expensive Mac to run Windows.

Mar 15, 06 - 06:45 pm Comment from: iSteve

The video looks real to me. I have no desire to run Windows on my beautiful iMac but I hope lots of geeks out there that would normally buy a Dell or HP give some consideration to buying a Mac instead based on being able to install Windows. Like Thurrott they may just begin to realize how great the Mac OS really is.

Mar 15, 06 - 07:00 pm Comment from: dab2

Ashvillian,

Wow, after looking at the page you have linked, I see that Apple has a great record of fixing issues that crop up with every operating system. Some of the most critical issues were in fact not Apple issues but third party issues that affected multiple OS's, such as Apache or PHP. This page also only recognizes specifically patched issues. Some of these may have been fixed with the release of new versions of the OS.

If you think OS X is bad then you need to stop using computers and hide in a cave.

Mar 15, 06 - 07:03 pm Comment from: OzzysCross101

WINE! DAMNIT!

Stop this! give the money to the devs of Darwine, then you won't have to go through this poop OS!!

Yawn...WHO CARES????? Windows on a Mac? Makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

A non-story IMHO. I could not care less. Windows sucks camel ass.

Someone with too much free time made that useless video.

Windows on a Mac? BwaaaaaaaHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!! WHY? Why?

Mar 15, 06 - 07:47 pm Comment from: tribaleye

Unless video is being routed into the mac from a PC, looks real ... either way, a serious waste of a good Mac ;o) why bother!?

Mar 15, 06 - 07:51 pm Comment from: i don't get it

What is the incessant fascination with booting Windows on a Mac?

Agreed. WTF is with this obsession with booting XP on a Mac anyway?

If I understand this right, the idea is to shut down Mac OS X in order to turn your Mac into a hacked, unsupported, lucky-if-it-works PC clone. WHY?!

IMO if you need to run Windows that damned bad, get a PC.

Mar 15, 06 - 08:08 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

I have never seen the iMac look so horrible until now. If geeks want buy iMacs to run windows, so be it. More Apple hardware sales..

Mar 15, 06 - 08:13 pm Comment from: mike k.

did Ashvillian really just link to Secunia?

He must be new here ... even the regular trolls know better than that.

Uhm. Apple will sell more hardware? Marketshare goes up? People realize how little they really need Windows and switch fully?

Just a thought..

Mar 15, 06 - 08:44 pm Comment from: Spinnetti

Seems real to me....

Many of you are short sighted about why you would want to.
1. Its a fun technical challenge
2. Some of us NEED some applications that are only on Windows! <GASP>

I happen to WANT to use a Mac, but I also have several programs that I must have and there is no Mac version.

Therefore, the smart thing is to stick with Winbloze, but I want to support the Mac platform. What to do? Simple. Let me boot Windows on my mac so I can run my couple of programs when I need to, and the rest of the time I'll be in Mac mode. Otherwise, I have double the spend unless that gets too much in which case the Mac would have to go.

Its a great option for practical users that want to support Mac, but don't drink the Kool-aid.

Mar 15, 06 - 08:55 pm Comment from: John

It looks real enough to me and not only that but it seems to run at full speed as well. Pretty cool to have the option to boot into Windows if you really have to only that is.

Mar 15, 06 - 09:05 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

Congrats to the person who loaded Windows on a Mac. Now what?

That is totally of no use to me and I couldn't care less about running windows unless it's parallel to the Mac OS X AND in a secured area on the computer. I don't want windows f*cking up the whole thing - as it is prone to do.

Let's see that then I'm impressed.

This experience is just like when I see a cool Sony laptop and think "Hmm, I could use one of those - they're pretty sweet". Then I remember Oh Yeah! it only runs windows - I don't need the head-ache. Forget it.

NEXT!

Mar 15, 06 - 09:22 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Did anyone else find that rather disturbing?

So that crap is what windows looks like? No thanks.

Mar 15, 06 - 10:06 pm Comment from: macintosh16tx

Looks like Virtual PC to me.... that whole setup process thing is just like adding a new software on VPC...

but who cares if you can book windows on a Mac? Get you a little shuttle and a switch box or something... i don't want to ruin my Mac by adding M$....

mac

Mar 15, 06 - 10:50 pm Comment from: Michael R. Casaretto

It appears to be real. The images posted earlier seemed a little strange. But the video and the consistancy of image placement looks valid. I would like to get his instructions and see if he is dual booting. I am in need of a dual booting capability.

Mar 15, 06 - 11:07 pm Comment from: W Baker

Let's see if I've got this greater market-share argument straight: Joe six-pack goes down to the local Apple store; he's heard about how well integrated Macs are; he's tired of fighting off every PC venereal disease and has heard that Macs are, by the very type and nature of their well-written code, secure; and now he can run two different OS's, Windows and what's-it-called, Mac. So he plunks down what he considers an exorbitant amount of money for a computer (compared to his Dell); brings it home; installs XP and within seconds on the net is back in Bangkok.

You think that scenario, or anything similar, increases market share?

Mar 15, 06 - 11:24 pm Comment from: Ashvillian Mom

Ashvillian,

You are on some seriously bad crack even for a Microsoft Windows Butt Monkey Lemming Fan Dork.

Mar 15, 06 - 11:28 pm Comment from: Ardie

Just amazing. Never saw hands on a keyboard or a mouse. And was this person holding the camera with one hand and typing with the other?

Mar 15, 06 - 11:40 pm Comment from: John

It is a fake, the guy would have said how he did it by now if legit. he probably has a windows bios in there somewhere or is booting from a PC on the floor, not the iMac.

Mar 16, 06 - 12:07 am Comment from: Random Coolzip

Wow, the trolls are out in force.

Ashvillian -

The Secunia page you linked to says right at the top:

"Currently, 0 out of 67 Secunia advisories, are marked as "Unpatched" in the Secunia database."

This means ALL known Secunia advisories have been patched!

Mar 16, 06 - 01:03 am Comment from: Ryan

It's probably a full screen video capture....

and what the hell is with the shakey cam stuff......I could only watch about 10 Seconds of that without feeling sick to my stomach.

Mar 16, 06 - 01:43 am Comment from: Object-X

Someone did it! The contest is officially won. Amazing.

Mar 16, 06 - 03:27 am Comment from: macaholic

Not sure which is worse. The thought of a POS OS on my nice Mac, or my nice OS X on a POS doze box

Mar 16, 06 - 04:02 am Comment from: G4Dualie

If it's real, it's interesting. With the exception of a few Winbloze apologists, I think this will prove to be a bigger interest in the PC community than in the Mac community.

If narf2006 is smart enough to accomplish this, I also hope he's capable of documenting the process in writing. The first thing I'd like to see are popular game frame-rates, for PC to Mac-XP comparison purposes, because that's probably the only barometer many PC users will understand.

Did you notice during the initial install of XP that the color scheme looks like the ol' white over blue used in the early days of DOS? Things haven't changed much in twenty years, have they?

MW: evidence; as in we need to see more...

Good night dude!

Mar 16, 06 - 04:39 am Comment from: Billy Ash

You guys should be happy.

This now means that there will be allot of switchers.

I know I will be, now that I can have one machine with Both OSs on it.

Mar 16, 06 - 06:19 am Comment from: huh?

Anybody care to tell me the advantage of dual-booting WinXP (or an Win for that matter) on a Mac instead of running it safely inside a protected VirtualPC-like environment within MacOSX? Yes, I know that isn't available yet, but is the approach that would make sense to me. Why have to shut down my Mac just to reboot it into Windows, then do the same in Windows just to get back to OSX? What a pain that would be, not to mention all the risks associated with the dual-boot concept. I don't want to turn my Mac into a Windows machine, even for a second. I just want to be able to run Windows apps simultaneously as I run Mac apps, with all the cut/paste options right there. I'd keep the Windows environment completely isolated from the net if at all possible.

Just wondering why some folks think the dual-boot thing is the way to go..? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Mar 16, 06 - 06:39 am Comment from: SisterOfEvil

I think it's a fake.
