Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 10:53 AM EST

"prodedgy" has posted a second screen movie capture of Windows XP running via Parallels virtualization software on Mac OS X which shows the Mac OS X clock running in real time, "so people can see I didn't edit or accelerate the video."

Amazing...(?)

Cool, due to my post that i said that the url typing with letters and numbers were to fast to be true, this guy made this video again with the clock.

So i come to the conclusion that this is not fake, and he must be a darn fast url typer!

thanks

Does anyone know if using this type of Windows solution (as opposed to using Boot Camp) will somehow open up OSX (and the hard drive space it resides on) to any vulnerabilities, viruses or other concens that would be avoided by simply using the "re-boot method" used with Boot Camp?

Thanks.

I would like to see him attempt a exposé in there - along with a drag an drop from windows to os x, or vice versa.

Apr 11, 06 - 11:15 am Comment from: BriAnimations

The real problem with this software is, as opposed to boot camp, there are no video card drivers... so no games or anything 3d works.

Apr 11, 06 - 11:18 am Comment from: Andy C.

This my friends is the killer app that will be used far more than Boot Camp for the average switcher.

Gamers will still prefer the dual-boot option to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of their machines, but for productivity, running your Windows apps side by side with your Mac OS X apps is the key. Then one day when the Windows apps are no longer needed, you just delete the disk image off your hard drive and you're done with it forever.

Richard,

Its my understanding that the VM environment actually protects Windows from malicious attacks. Some others posted this in an earlier news item.

Come onnnnn . . . if I wanted to see real-time video of garbage running on a superior piece of equipment, all I'd have to do is watch American Idol on my 61" plasma television!

Yeh-heh-hehesssssssss . . .

Apr 11, 06 - 11:26 am Comment from: Richard

Protects Windows! Wow!

If that's the case, I agree that this will be used more often than Boot Camp (except for gaming), as the switching back and forth would be very useful for people (like myself) quickly testing website changes on Win browsers..

Very cool!

Richard, Yes it does.. OSX is only safe without Windows.

Apr 11, 06 - 11:37 am Comment from: Morty

XP is ONE BUTT FUGLY OS!!

Not to get to run Windows apps WITHOUT WINDOWS!!!

Come on it can be done, it has to be done!

Apr 11, 06 - 11:40 am Comment from: Noraa Haras

No, Windows is not "safe" inside Mac OS X. It is more safe from outside hacking, but not from malware. What you put on your computer is still your responsibility.

Now, running Windows apps inside a Windows "Classic" mode might be less prone to malware as you wouldn't be running the whole Windows OS...

Apr 11, 06 - 11:45 am Comment from: c a r l o

this is pretty much a perfect a setup for a web designer who needs to check there designs on windows and mac os's.

very very cool.

but im wondering like everyone else, is there potential for viruses etc to access the mac via this program?

thats really the big question, the drivers will come in due time.

i would really like to see an Apple version of this, that way youd know theyd be extremely careful of security.

perhaps in Leopard, it seems possible with boot camp coming out and the upcoming virtualisation functionality of the new Intel chips.

Apr 11, 06 - 11:46 am Comment from: dafuser

When you're running Windows on the Intel Macs, it won't matter if you're dual booting or using Windows under some type of VM environment. Windows will always be able to get all the "standard" Windows infections ( Trojans, Spyware, Viruses) and any other Windows security issues just like any other PC.

It'll just be the Windows installation which has the problems and won't affect the OS X installtion.

I have installed parallels but have no idea where to find the XP image to use. I launch the program and get "No boot device"

Anyone have an idea?

Apr 11, 06 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Radak

Oh boy. A web browser. How exciting. Somebody alert the media.

Apr 11, 06 - 12:18 pm Comment from: ndelc

Well, it certainly is a lot faster than Virtual PC on a G5, but not nearly as impressive as the video of Half Life 2 running on an iMac.

Apr 11, 06 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

Apaterso: Go to the forums at Paralles web site. The BETA software has a bug in it right now and you have to go through some gyrations to install from the CD. But it can me done. Heck I did it.

Also: Window conected to the internet is ALWAYS vulnerable. It's Microsoft Windows for crying out loud.

My suggestions to avoid the evils that Windows is subject to:

NEVER use email in Windows
NEVER use Explorer to surf the web - download FireFox or other browser

use:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Update, Update, Update, Update you Windows software.

i thought everyone said XP ran so slow? looks like its running very fast too me.

why isn´t he getting viruses when he downloads -everyone here says that happens whenever one goes on the internet.

Beryllium,

I think you hit it right on the head. I have a game I gotta have (IL2) and it only runs on a PC (along with Solidworks). I would want to run them native to get maximum speed. Other than that, I have a few other misc. programs that would be better to be able to do under virtualization.

Funny thing is, now that I CAN run windows, I'm not sure that I WANT to. I'll try it just to see how it goes, but if its not blazingly faster than my game PC, I'll wipe it back out to keep my Mac junk free.

Apr 11, 06 - 01:17 pm Comment from: tHE dUDE

Gyrations to install from CD? Not sure what that means. You have to tell it that you are using a CD drive not a CD image file.

Works fine. No problems on my Duo Mini + 2GB RAM. Plenty fast enough for general tasks. Anybody run AutoCAD on it yet?

Mouse movement is much like VirtualPC. Not really smooth. Make sure to install the tools.

Apr 11, 06 - 01:18 pm Comment from: eXpC

Actually, windows runs fast, and is usually more responsive than OS X. But if you're an average user, you'll get malware, which slows it down.

But with my experience, things like scrolling and what not is easier and faster in Windows.

As soon as this Parallels product is refined I'll be buying 4 new Mini's for my office and burning my Gateways in the parking lot. Bring your sticks and hotdogs - we're having a weenie roast.

This looks pretty impressive. I'm sure Apple will come out with their own version by the time Leopard ships.

Apr 11, 06 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Daniel

i hope apple releases virtualization software that can boot the windows partition Boot Camp makes... that would rock! (use virtualization for applications like ie or boot natively on the machine both using the same partition/drivers)

Apr 11, 06 - 03:27 pm Comment from: Stuart

When I buy a new Macbook Pro for the business we are about to start, I'll be installing this and Windows (and perhaps Linux) to show our idiot IT people why we should begin moving back to Mac OS X, at least in certain departments to begin with - marketing, graphics and our call centres. Show them a whole new world of possibilities!

They're a rabidly anti-Apple bunch, but their inner geeks will wet themselves when they see this running on a beautiful Mac!

VMware has confirmed they are working on porting to OS X! VMware has been doing this for years. I was a Linux administrator in my previous job and we had an HP server running VMware ESX software as the base OS. Inside of it, we had 5 virtual linux systems and 1 virtual windows system. The HP server had 6GB of memory.

I don't know if Parallels has the same capabilities as VMware. For instance, in VMware, you can create a snapshot of a virtual machine. If you do something to hose up the OS inside the virtual machine, just quit it and not save the image. Reboot the virtual machine and you are back to where you were. Thats why virtualization is great for developers. It would be really nice to have an OS X virtual machine running inside of OS X for development purposes.

I look forward to having VMware or Parallels or whatever Leopard has up its sleeve so I can run Linux and Windows inside of my OS X.
