What's with the low audio? It's not a lot of work to fix sound levels on video editing software.

Amateurs.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:22 am Comment from: ROB DUNFORD

mmm...looks like $349 worth of good sounds, good engineering as well.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:24 am Comment from: PC Apologist

Damn.

He sounds like he's sick. Do you suppose he knows what a turkey he's describing?

"Just pop in 6 D-Cells." Oh, sure.. that's not a $30 investment or anything. And I've got a whole drawer full of D-Cells at the house.

"The same exact Apple Remote." Does anybody have more than one of these suckers in the house now? (iMac and iPod dock, maybe?) What are the odds of accidentally messing up what's happening on the Mac when you're trying to control the HiFi, or whatever? It seems if you've got your new "living room" Mac mini and your iPod HiFi in the same living room, you're gonna have some problems, no?

BOO Apple. This doesn't get a press event. This gets quietly added to the website. Have you forgotten everything you've learned?

Mar 01, 06 - 09:29 am Comment from: Mike

I'm sure they sound phenomenal and based on the specs, I don't believe it is overpriced.. I will probably pick one up.

However, there is just no way to get excited about this product in the same way we are blown away by other Apple products..

Mar 01, 06 - 09:33 am Comment from: Funny thing

I have to agree with the PC Apologist about the remotes. I was at an Apple store and my playing with one of the remotes on a MBP, I was able to (inadvertantly) mess up the other MBP along with some of the iMacs on the back wall. If Apple wants use to have multiple Apple products in the livingroom, this can be total chaos. Imagine trying to watch a DVD on the mini only to also turn on the iPod hifi and got music instead. Now you have to walk over to the hifi and point the remote directly at it to shut it off (or pull out the iPod). Then you'd probably have to put something in front of its remote sensor so you can use the remote to play with the mini. As much as I want the new mini, this isn't good.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:34 am Comment from: JohnE

BOO to Mac fanatics with OCD who blow this way out of proportion and cause more harm than good.

(me included)

Mar 01, 06 - 09:39 am Comment from: G Spank

When he stops on Phils music collection and hits "Cocaine Bliss" - now THAT is priceless. Hilarious....

Mar 01, 06 - 09:45 am Comment from: Mike Buonarroti

If you subscribe to "Inside Mac TV" podcast (via iTMS), it as good video and audio but they edited it down to what they felt were the most important 22 minutes of Steve's presentation.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:48 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

Yeah, he does rather sound a bit jaded (as opposed to laid back) during some of the footage.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:51 am Comment from: Mike Buonarroti

Regarding the Apple Remote: Please, don't talk about something you have no knowledge about!!!

The remotes are IR (line-of-sight infra-red) not RF (radio frequency). You can "image" any particular Apple remote to a specific device by simply aiming the remote at the device and holding down the "Menu" and ">>" keys for 6 seconds. This insures that each device has its own remote, or you can image one remote to all of the devices.

Mar 01, 06 - 09:54 am Comment from: ROB DUNFORD

Did you all check out the Mac Mini video, it's the home media center, if we had access to shows here in the UK...I'd buy one.
It all seemed to work pretty seamlessly, even streamed from the Macbook Pro.
I think Apple will simply build on this more and more.
Maybe I am stating the obvious, but it looks a whole lot more 'viable' than some Windows media center, it's cost effective, it's looks good under any LCD TV. I could see a lot of people just buying it just to sit under the TV.
Does optical audio out mean 5.1 support?

Mar 01, 06 - 09:54 am Comment from: Mike

Anyway you look at it, the Mac Mini is a VERY WORTHY upgrade..

The pricing has not increased either... Apple just took away the option to buy the stripped down $499 model without Wifi and Bluetooth..

Steve Jobs slipping by calling Phil Schiller's MacBook Pro a "PowerBook" before quickly correcting himself

Been noticing a trend lately?

I think he's a bit overloaded with all the deals he's been making, Disney, music labels, movies etc.

I still can't beleive he's charging $99 for a rather lame leather iPod case when one can get a much better one online for $20.

Don't get me started on that ugly boombox thing.

MacDude says "I still can't beleive he's charging $99 for a rather lame leather iPod case when one can get a much better one online for $20."

You think that's bad? The leather Luis Vuitton iPod case is $599. No Lie!

Mar 01, 06 - 09:59 am Comment from: Verbose

Apple tried to not make a big deal out of the introduction because they knew these products were not WOW products, they are just good products that expand whats available to everyone. It is all the Apple fans that set everyone up for a big let-down. Peoeple started building this event up until we were expecting proof of God to be displayed. When that didn't happen, everyone starting pointing fingers at who was to blame for this short fall. Really it was the people who blew the thing out of proportion.

Apple knew these products where not going to knock peoples socks off. They save their big stuff for the big Apple events.

Mar 01, 06 - 10:00 am Comment from: IT guy

The remote problem is common to all IR technology. Just walk into Best Buy pick up a TV remote and increase the volume and see how many TVs respond.

Well, if you have the Mac mini and iPod HiFi connected to your TV somehow, and you put your iPod on HiFi, use the apple remote, does it control the mac mini or the iPod HiFi?

Now, that would be bummer!

Unless the remotes are distinct (technologically), I can't think of a way to avoid this confusion.

Mar 01, 06 - 10:03 am Comment from: Mike

IT Guy Says "I can't think of a way to avoid this confusion."

It's simple. You can program the remote by pointing it at the selected device and holding the menu button down for six seconds.. From then on, it will only control the selected device.

Mar 01, 06 - 10:12 am Comment from: bscepter

Hmm. The video was sponsored by Microsoft. Ironic?

Mar 01, 06 - 10:13 am Comment from: Mike Buonarroti

This announcement was necessary to introduce the minor products prior to a major announcement on April 1st, Apple's 30th anniversary. There won't be enough time to announce everything on April 1st, so the "mid-level" items were brought out 1 month prior to the real news. It also keeps them from being completely buried by the other announcements to come.

I feel the iPods HiFi's biggest advantage is using it in conjunction with an Airport Express to stream your music from your Mac to any part of your home.

If you take the video streaming demo Steve did with the Mac mini and apply it to the Airport Express, you get an all new Airport express that can stream video, too, to any home device... perhaps a slim white video companion to the iPod HiFi that can receive and store video streams. At the same time, he'll announce full length movies from iTMS.

Yesterday was a mere preview.

Mar 01, 06 - 10:21 am Comment from: dan

steve looked a little tired or bummed out and kinda made a few mistakes throughout the presentation. did they force him to come out with this update now? there was no VIBE in the show...

Mar 01, 06 - 10:29 am Comment from: Mike K

This is the analyst in me, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that Disney and Pixar movies will be first!

Mar 01, 06 - 10:39 am Comment from: Petey

Boy does he sound sick!

He sounded like he needs a few days off.

Even SJs reality distortion field wavered too.

:/

Mar 01, 06 - 10:53 am Comment from: gwm

OK. The demo using Bonjour to wirelessly snatch content from outside sources makes it all clear. Wooohooo!

This does rock!

Hi there mac guys!
I am Spanish, so please forgive me about my English wink. In the new Mac Mini video, Steve Jobs shows the new features included in front row. One of them is called "Shared Photos". He then starts to look inside Phil's Powerbook (oh, well, sorry, Macbook Pro...) and begins to play an album called "Antarctica". And here it comes my question, do you know the name of the song which is playing during the slideshow? I think that it's veryu beautiful, and I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me its name. Thanks in advance.

Best regards from Spain!

grin

Mar 01, 06 - 11:26 am Comment from: Jim of Davao

He does look sick, probably just a bit worse than on Macworld. I think he also lost some weight.

I really don't see the Hi-Fi flying off the shelves. Too pricey. Mac minis look interesting but I'd rather save up and get an iMac.

Mar 01, 06 - 11:49 am Comment from: Jooop

No audio for me no matter what browser I use. Do I have to watch these on Windows or something?

Mar 01, 06 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Boombox too pricey??

We'll see. I remember a LOT of Mac fans saying the same thing (and much worse!) about the first iPod.

bscepter:

"Hmm. The video was sponsored by Microsoft. Ironic?"

What I found interesting was that the commercial was an anti-linux (Linux vs. Windows Server) commercial. Wow, giant M$ is worried about Linux now, eh? One point in the commercial was something about "total cost of ownership", hmmm, interesting to see M$ using that line of reasoning. Boy, I guess M$ must be losing a LOT (iPDN MW) of customers to Linux.

What's the matter MDN, can't fess up to the fact ipod Hi-Fi is utter crap?

Mar 01, 06 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Mike Buonarroti

Screw CNET!! For MUCH BETTER QUALITY, go watch most of the presentation by subscribing (free) to the "Inside Mac TV" podcast in iTMS!! You can even make it full screen. (22mins, 50Mb).

Mar 01, 06 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Double standards my ****

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29977

This article is utter rubbish - I showed my usually 'anti mac just for the sake of it' collage friends the iPod HiFi, and not one of them thought it was ugly, they all loved it and one (in addition to myself) is thinking of buying one when he tests its sound quality.

The customer is always right, and these customers love it!!!!

Mar 01, 06 - 04:13 pm Comment from: Double standard

Ugliest "speaker system" I have ever seen. And inferior sound quality compared to Altec Lansing and others. Hardly an example of Apple innovation. This is the "mighty mouse" of speakers. It hooks certain folks like yourself because it's an Apple branded accessory while possessing few real tangible benefits.

Mar 02, 06 - 10:14 am Comment from: Less is More

It's a product for a limited market; not the product to replace your home stereo. Take it to the "cabana" and place it on the table (over a scratch-friendly table cloth, presumably) and it's good. Great for a picnic, sure; a party, maybe. But a replacement for the home stereo? Naah... a toy for those who can afford it ... priced to be profitable at low sales volume. For that price, a stereo company could toss in a CD player and radio; and maybe for a little bit more, comparable speakers.
