Vodafone to offer Apple iPhone in ten markets around the world
Tuesday, May 06, 2008 - 08:20 AM EDT

In a brief statement on the company's website, Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe.

Later this year, Vodafone customers in the following countries will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network:

• Australia
• Czech Republic
• Egypt
• Greece
• Italy
• India
• Portugal
• New Zealand
• South Africa
• Turkey

In addition, there are reports that, from the list above, at least Australia and Italy will have iPhones available from multiple carriers:

"After months of speculation an industry insider (who has asked to remain anonymous) has confirmed to CNET.com.au that Optus will be one of several Australian mobile service providers to be selling Apple's iPhone, with sales and service commencing in the last week of June," Joseph Hanlon reports for CNET.

"Optus plans to make the announcement mid-May ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference on June 9 in San Francisco where Apple CEO Steve Jobs is tipped to launch the next generation of iPhone," Hanlon reports. "While this source could not confirm a 3G version of the popular handset, they did suggest that Optus was expecting the upgraded models."

"There remains further speculation as to which of the remaining Australian carriers will also licence the sale of the iPhone," Hanlon reports.

Reuters reports, "Telecoms companies Vodafone and Telecom Italia will both sell Apple Inc's iPhone in Italy, in an apparent break from previous exclusive carrier deals."

"Neither Vodafone nor Telecom Italia provided many details. 'Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year,' was all that the Italian group had to say on Tuesday," Reuters reports.

And Sweden will get it when?

May 06, 08 - 08:59 am Comment from: LukeinOz

@ Luke

I agree mate.

Been a Vodafone customer in Oz for years, and VERY happy about this.

@ Tassadar I do not believe that Apple will allow Vodafone logos on the iPhone.

And even if they do - just go to an Apple store (or online) and buy a phone from Apple directly!

my 2 cents

Luke

@Rip0ff

Needs 3G for it to work in Japan. I'm holding out in hopes of getting an iPhone that will roam in Japan, which my current phone will not do.

May 06, 08 - 10:19 am Comment from: Synthmeister

Wow! That is a great expansion. Now people won't have to go nearly as far to buy their gray market iPhones!

Did anyone notice India? That one country is HUGE! India is almost as important as China as far as the enormous market potential.
The other BIG market would be Russia.

Without a doubt, this will be Apple's biggest year ever.

May 06, 08 - 10:25 am Comment from: DogGone

@Synthmeister

Next year will be even bigger. By then Apple will have close to 20-30 countries selling the iPhone.

May 06, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: Macintosh

@tassadar:

There is no way there will be a Vodafone logo on the phone. Just the carrier signal.

May 06, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: Lanzarote

And what about Spain?

May 06, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: Ampar

That's great as long as sales in Egypt isn't just a pyramid scheme.

May 06, 08 - 11:43 am Comment from: Whatever

The phone part won't work in Japan - Different system

May 06, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: LiM

Wait for the plans....

May 06, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Syd auz

That ought to send a strong message to Morris Iemma's arse, that cancelling the free public wi-fi is a death sentence.

I'll be scratching my head if he attends the opening of the apple store wanting an iPhone, where by we're charge extra for using the 3G network for internet rather than free public wi-fi as per every other developed city.

Especially when Sydney CBD isn't actually considered that large, ie, I can walk from one side of the city to the other side in less than two hours.

May 06, 08 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

Just those countries combined could be 10 million iPhone sales once the ball gets rolling.
Japan should be number one priority and then China Mobile. China is a cell phone haven, even at that price, but not sure of the restrictions there.
Allowing finger-based Chinese symbol text says alot about Apple's plans. 1.6 billion people is an extremely desirable market, regardless of the annual income.

May 06, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Micro Me

In New Zealand, Vodafone's competitor, Telecom, has recently hinted that they'll have the 3G iPhone on their network around the end of this year. I wonder if this means we'll get multiple carriers also. Great if we did.

May 06, 08 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Jeff the Trader

How about The Netherlands?

May 06, 08 - 05:44 pm Comment from: Daner

Published speculation reports that Sweden will get the iPhone via Telia, and from what I have read Telia would rather wait until a 3G version is available, hopefully with dual cameras and videoconferencing.
