Wal-Mart pulls Linux PCs due to poor sales

“Computers that run the Linux operating system instead of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows didn’t attract enough attention from Wal-Mart customers, and the chain has stopped selling them in stores, a spokeswoman said Monday,” The Associated Press reports. “‘This really wasn’t what our customers were looking for,’ said Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah. They were looking for Slim Jims, pro wrestling posters, 56×29 Faded Glory jeans, and beer helmets.

AP continues, “To test demand for systems with the open-source operating system, Wal-Mart stocked the $199 ‘Green gPC,’ made by Everex of Taiwan, in about 600 stores starting late in October. Walmart.com, the chain’s e-commerce site, had sold Linux-based computers before and will continue selling the gPC.”

  1. I am not surprised and the “MacDailyNews Take” was spot on and not harsh at all. It was the truth, not many people go to walmart to buy a computer. They wait for the insanely cheap deals at best buy or staples or circuit city for that $300 laptop or desktop. Also for people trying to make ends meet… they can go to a library and use a computer or a coffee shop of some sort or the kids can just use a computer in school. Some will let you stay after to use the library or computers.

  2. @ Mr. Reeee

Gee, you buy Apple products…. Are these made in First World countries paying union wages? Er, maybe not!

Years ago, Apple used to make most of their products here in the USA paying the factory workers a living wage…. and abiding by US environmental laws… not outsourcing to Chinese manufacturers paying Chinese wages and abiding by Chinese environmental laws (i.e. nonexistent)….

Gee, that makes you a HYPOCRITE!

  3. You may think the MDN Take is horrible and elitist, but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s truth to it. Sure, yes, some families are just looking to make ends meet, but if I’m forced to go to the Wal-Mart by my parents’ house (usually because it’s the only place open late at night), a significant number of the people shopping there are ignorant rednecks. And those are the people MDN singled out.

  4. Hey, Ben
I’m actually lower middle class (in more ways than one…) and live in the heart of Wally Land. My comment was a shot at many peoples attitude toward the “stereotypical” Wal-Mart shopper, not the shoppers themselves.

  5. The one thing ya’ll are missin’ is that, Wal-Fart didn’t stop carryin Linux boxes ’cause they wasn’t sellin’ none, they stopped ’cause they was paid to by _________ (you fill in the blank – duh).

And about those $199 ‘Green gPC,’ made by Everex of Taiwan, how do those work? Do they revert back to lushes green moss after two years, and then I just transplant them into my back yard and go buy another?

  6. The salesmen from WallMart must be like those of the department stores here: completely ignorant of anything that is not of Windows!
How do you want them to give good consultings about any other OS?

  7. I will never set foot in Wal-Mart.

“Faded Glory” Jeans – what a great name that is the perfect embodiment of what Wal-Mart and the BushCo. Government ultimately stand for. Profits for us, working poor for you. This empire will find it’s own way back to the ground. FAIL.

  8. Ben Dover…
The difference between buying Apple products and crap from Wal-Mart? I have no choice.

Sure, I’d prefer if Apple products were ‘Made in the USA’, but they’re not. In fact, there’s really almost no such thing as ‘Made in USA’ anymore. Even crappy American cars, electronics and appliances are assembled from parts gathered from everywhere.

Virtually everything is being outsourced to China and elsewhere. The people working in computer factories certainly have a higher skill level and compensation than people who assemble toys or package injected plastic junk.

I’ve been working on a project in China and have some familiarity with the factory workers’ skill levels.
