Wall Street Journal poll: What’s on your electronics gift list? (includes Zune, omits iPod?!)
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 03:58 PM EDT

"Consumer electronics appear to be a bright spot in what is expected to be an otherwise tepid holiday shopping season," The Wall Street Journal reports.

WSJ is conducting a poll where readers can vote on their most-likely gadget gift.

The choices offered - along with their current totals (%, votes) - are:
• Flat Panel TV - 5% (69 votes)
• iPhone - 51% (647)
• Compact Camera - 5% (69)
• SLR Camera - 6% (78)
• BlackBerry - 10% (131)
• Zune - 8% (101)
• DS Lite - 5% (66)
• GPS Navigator - 10% (126)

MacDailyNews Take: Zune, but no iPod? Look up "conspicuously, blatantly, and screamingly absent" and you get this WSJ poll. Something smells really fishy.

Is The Wall Street Journal (or an advertiser, perhaps) looking for skewed poll results?

Well, alrighty then.

To us, iPhone's vote total looks a little light. You know what to do.

Vote in the WSJ poll here.

UPDATE: 4:37pm EST: Well, that didn't take long. WSJ has amended their poll choice (but, not their results list, yet) from "iPhone" to "iPhone or iPod" lumping the two products together. Should we tell WSJ that altering the choices midstream, of course, also instantly makes the results of their rigged poll even more worthless? We guess we just did. You still know what to do.

For those celebrating the holiday, Happy Thanksgiving and, as always, thanks for visiting MacDailyNews and iPodDailyNews!

52%!

Nov 21, 07 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Ampar

I would guess MS paid for it but then the iPhone wouldn't be there.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:12 pm Comment from: Ampar

P.S. Some of the comments are great to read. Zune is a lump of coal, indeed.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Artist

In all fairness, the iPhone is an iPod that makes phone calls, so it be a bit repetitive to put an iPod on the list.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Spark

Yeah, I registered my comment on their site. Looks like many others are pointing out the irrelevancy of the Zune.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:17 pm Comment from: MB

HAHA...Almost all of the comments on that blog ask about the IPod.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:25 pm Comment from: elmo

Why would some of the items be 'generic' and some not?

Nov 21, 07 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

iPhone now up to 55% (784 votes).

Nov 21, 07 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Spark

@Artist. I do not agree.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:37 pm Comment from: Look!

The poll says "iPhone or iPod" and lumps the votes under iPhone.

MW = nation, as in iPod nation!

Nov 21, 07 - 05:38 pm Comment from: drbyers

so the iPod didn't make the list. big whup...

i'm sure you guys will live.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:40 pm Comment from: DakRoland

It now says iPhone or iPod

Nov 21, 07 - 05:43 pm Comment from: Crazy Ed

Hey now... easy! The Zune has cool art on its back.

Hmmm. Maybe they should have just put "art" on that list instead?

Nov 21, 07 - 05:45 pm Comment from: Brau

Like the previous posters have said, many looking for an iPod will choose an iPhone instead. I am one of those.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:45 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

@Artist

Speaking of redundancy, I consider the choices for compact and SLR cameras to be redundant. I'm an amateur photographer, so I'm not unaware of the differences. It's a split of the same market— digital cameras. So having both the iPod and the iPhone listed separately is still feasible, according to the WSJ's logic.

I have to say the 56% chunk is more impressive when blocked together.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Behold the power of MDN

iPhone (or iPod) up to 57% (919 votes)

Nov 21, 07 - 05:56 pm Comment from: effwerd

You guys are as bad as Ron Paul fanatics.

Nov 21, 07 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Apple is Always Right

61% 1125 votes smile

Nov 21, 07 - 06:00 pm Comment from: greatcaffeine

I guess they assumed that everyone already has an iPod.

Nov 21, 07 - 06:02 pm Comment from: Chris

Ampar,
Lump of coal was me! I'm glad you liked it.

Pc Guy,
I voted in Safari, Opera, iCab, Netscape, Camino, Shiira, Omniweb, Real Player, and even Internet Explorer, although it did mess up the page!

Nov 21, 07 - 06:03 pm Comment from: Vlad

@effwerd

No we're not. Didn't you see the Wired article?

Nov 21, 07 - 06:11 pm Comment from: madgunde

Oh man, these polls never mean much because of organized support from MDN readers and other Apple fan sites, but it's funny to watch these news sites keep trying!

Lets see if we can get Zune down to below 1%, shall we? wink

Nov 21, 07 - 06:17 pm Comment from: Poll Pwner

Hey, you can vote as often as you want -- they don't check your cookies!

Nov 21, 07 - 06:20 pm Comment from: smackman

In all fairness to WSJ, perhaps they are just getting caught up in all the iPhone hype and they just 'forgot' about the iPod......

naaaaaaah!

smile

Nov 21, 07 - 06:27 pm Comment from: Ampar

No Xbox? Oh well!

"Hey, you can vote as often as you want -- they don't check your cookies!"

Then I guess it's time for an AppleScript routine to vote repeatedly and automatically.

P.S. Nice work, Chris!

Nov 21, 07 - 06:30 pm Comment from: ken1w

You know it's a stupid poll when some of the choices are product types and some are specific products. If some choices are "Compact Camera" or "Flat Panel TV," other choices should not be "iPhone" or "Zune." It should be "Smartphone" (which would cover iPhone and Blackberry on the list) and "Media Player" (which would cover iPod and Zune).

Actually, I suppose it's a good thing that the popular media considers iPhone to be it's own product category, although I don't know how Zune got on the list ($$$).

Nov 21, 07 - 06:31 pm Comment from: not fooled

Polls mean nothing. Sales mean everything.

The 2007 holiday season results will speak for itself.

Hope that Ballmer asked Santa for plenty of chairs...

Nov 21, 07 - 06:32 pm Comment from: Swordmaker

@Artist

The iPod should definitely be a separate listing from the iPhone because when you buy an iPhone, you or the recipient can become contractually obligated for at least two years of service while an iPod purchase does not obligated the buyer for any future costs. The difference between the purchase and obligation of the two makes them totally different and they should not be combined.

I may elect to give a family member a $79 to $299 iPod as a one time expense, but would not choose to give them a $399 expense plus a $1440 future obligation. That makes the choice of iPhone or iPod a hard selection for a poll and completely distorts the resulting data.

Nov 21, 07 - 06:35 pm Comment from: bIzarRo BalLmeR

It's too funny now 1463 votes for ipod. No PS or XBOX? Odd.

Nov 21, 07 - 06:35 pm Comment from: second thought

Hmmm....

Forget Santa. All Apple users should send their old office equipment, especially chairs, to Redmond as kind-hearted gifts for the monkey himself. He's going to need them.

Nov 21, 07 - 06:36 pm Comment from: effwerd

Vlad,

No we're not. Didn't you see the Wired article?

Nope. I must admit, though, as long as MDN doesn't start minting its own money with Jobs' face on it, Ron Paul fanatics will always have us beat. Still...

Just got this off the WSJ site:

"Voting is now closed; it was a runaway victory for the iPhone/iPod category."

Another example of the Mac community at work! Another reason to be thankful this holiday season...

Nov 21, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: ed b

Go look at the WSJ link that you put in this feed ipods are under iphone, it wasn't left out. There goes the conspiracy theory. Not everybody is against Apple

Nov 21, 07 - 07:38 pm Comment from: CandTsmac

Oh, and also, Don't be too quick to dismiss the possibility that we're out to get your.

Psssttt. We are.

Nov 21, 07 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

You know how I'm voting.

And as far as omitting the i-POD goes you MAC lemmings can't seem to grasp that i-PODs are yesterday's news. The new Zunes blow away i-PODs in choice of colors, points and FM radio. Microsoft has once again caught lightning in a bottle. The Wall Street Journal gets this; I don't see why you MAC fanatics don't get it.

The Wall Street Journal is right to ignore the i-POD because no one will buy them this holiday season, except for you MAC lemmings who can't see the future when it's right in front of your face: Zune.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Nov 21, 07 - 07:45 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

I heard those Zunes were pieces of crap.

Nov 21, 07 - 07:55 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

Zune now down to 0%... and they may say that the voting is closed, but it just went up two votes when I clicked twice

Nov 21, 07 - 07:58 pm Comment from: Marian

It seems that astroturfing the Zune didn't help at all.
Now: iPhone or iPod: 22442 (71%); Zune: 125 (0%).

So... when 30000 votes were cast, Zune has 124. When only 1200 votes were cast, Zune had 101... All Zune votes were at the beginning, thanks to the PR companies Microsoft pays!

Nov 21, 07 - 08:14 pm Comment from: bIzarRo BalLmeR

"One of these days Alice....Zune! Right to the moon"

Nov 21, 07 - 08:16 pm Comment from: Er,

How 'rigged' is it if MDN tells us to go and vote!?!!!

Nov 21, 07 - 08:38 pm Comment from: Swordmaker

@Steve Ballmer

I heard those Zunes MS MP3 players were pieces of crapzune.

There, fixed it for you. No need for thanks.

@Er,

It isn't rigged... MDN was just participating in democracy with a "get out the vote" campaign...

Nov 21, 07 - 08:39 pm Comment from: Kenny

Oh well. It's a given that everyone already owns an ipod, it's just one of those common dime a dozen products now. To 'not' be included on a xmas gift list is actually good. It means you've penetrated the market enough that you don't need to beg people to buy you.
Oh and the iPhone is an iPod realy, with a phone thrown in.

Nov 21, 07 - 08:39 pm Comment from: Camera dude

Nikon D3. Is there anything else, besides an iPhone or iPod?

Nov 21, 07 - 08:41 pm Comment from: Kenny

OK MDN, the poll says iPhone or iPod. Sheesh I'm glad I poped in to save the day.
