can we get a list of the features that OS X has gained in the same time?

MDN word = part as in part seems to be missing

They should just call it "Chop-Chop" smile

Jun 27, 06 - 01:51 pm Comment from: Spark

This should be a business school example of how to ruin your reputation through over-promise & under-deliver. I have no doubt that VIsta will in many ways improve on XP, and if MS had kept the mouths shut for the last few years people would be comparing Vista to XP, not Vista vs Longhorn promises. The first would have been a mild success, the second is an obvious disaster. Just goes to show why Apple values confidentiality so much.

smegdude,

Can we get a list of the features that OS X has gained in the same time?

Since Longhorn was first discussed? Okay, then, everything in Mac OS X since it debuted on March 24, 2001:

Partial list:
• Uses a subset of the Portable Document Format (PDF) as the basis of its Quartz imaging model.
• Full-color, continuously-scalable icons.
• Drop shadows around window and isolated text elements to provide a sense of depth.
• Global application services - spell checker, special characters palette, color picker, font chooser and dictionary.
• Anti-aliasing of widgets, text, graphics and window elements.
• New interface elements including sheets (document modal dialogs attached to specific windows) and drawers.
• Interweaving windows of different applications (not necessarily adjacent in the visible stacking order).
• ColorSync color matching built into the core drawing engine (for print and multimedia professionals).
• OpenGL composites windows onto the screen to allow hardware accelerated drawing. This technology (introduced in version 10.2) is called Quartz Extreme.
• Exposé (introduced in version 10.3) Instantly display all open windows as thumbnails for easy navigation to different tasks, display all open windows as thumbnails from the current application, and hide all windows to access the desktop.
• Pervasive use of Unicode throughout the operating system.
• Straightforward architecture for localization of applications and other code, fully separating language dependencies from the core code of a program.
• FileVault (introduced in version 10.3) encrypts the user's Home folder with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit keys.
• Dashboard (introduced in version 10.4) supports small applications ("widgets") that can be called up and dismissed in one keystroke.
• Spotlight search technology (introduced in version 10.4) allows rapid real-time searches of data files, mail messages, photos, and other information, based on item properties (meta data) and/or content.
• Automator (introduced in version 10.4) an application designed to create an automatic work-flow for different tasks.
• Smart Folders (introduced in version 10.4) allow for dynamically updated folders depending on a set criteria.
• A well defined set of Human Interface Guidelines followed by almost all applications giving them intuitive, consistent user interface and keyboard shortcuts.
• Xgrid allows networked Macs to form a distributed computing system.
• Built in virtual file system images .dmg supporting encryption and compression, and optionally read/write capability.

Grow Up

What were you expecting to find here?
Mac users defending Vista?
The name of the site is MacDailyNews.
Get a clue.

Jun 27, 06 - 02:20 pm Comment from: Weeble

To "Grow Up"

There are a lot of goofs and some downright nutcases using these forums but you shouldn't be thinking about "Mac users". If some folks seem cultish, well that's just the way they are.

Don't worry about being associated with them if you choose a Mac. Not everyone that drives the same make of car as you will be to your liking either.

Jun 27, 06 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Jason

Grow Up,

The truth is sometimes harsh and painful. Your post is proof enough of that idea.

Funny stuff, unless you're waiting for nothing: Windows Vista - Takes the question, "Just what the !%$# are you waiting for?" to a whole new level.

Jun 27, 06 - 02:23 pm Comment from: Johann

Dear Grow Up:

The tone here is not obviously different from the tone at other forums. If anything, it is a little more mature than what you see in a typical PC-oriented forum. In any event, what you see here is humanity at work, with all its imperfections, in all its glory.

Perhaps real-life humanity is not your cup of tea?

I have a strong suspicion that what really turns you off is that it is a Mac-oriented forum. Maybe you should take your prejudices with you and just go away? I doubt that you will be missed.

Copland became MacOS X, a completely new operating system. Windows Vista is a cosmetic update to XP. Your joke is lost as you are comparing Apples to Lemons. smile

Jun 27, 06 - 02:30 pm Comment from: R

To all those who focus on who says what, as opposed to what is said:

ad hom·i·nem
adj.
As in ad himinem attack. Appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or reason: Debaters should avoid ad hominem arguments that question their opponents' motives.

i.e., ignoring the validity of a statement because it comes from a "Mac nutcase" or "cult memeber."

Grow Up and others-- no one says that you have to like anyone. But if you ignore the merit of something simply because of the way it's said, you're blind to an awful lot. And, if you don't see it, you're also dangerous because your ears are closed to things unless they're handed to you in the sort of package you want.

Jun 27, 06 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Longhorn/Vista/Windows had it's nads cut long ago...

Jun 27, 06 - 02:41 pm Comment from: Alex

Grow Up - I second this. Who cares? It's AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Who knows what's it going to be like. OSX is slow compared to XP. OpenGL is SHITE. Browsing is faster on XP than OSX. Live in the now!

Jun 27, 06 - 02:44 pm Comment from: Pointy

Those chopped off features are inconsequential if you take a good, hard look at them. Even without all the features promised, Vista in its current form is still a worthwhile upgrade from XP. Especially for those that do not find OS X to be their cup of tea.

After Beta testing the OS since the time it had the "plex" interface, I personally can't wait. There are lots of developer goodies in Vista that are very attractive. MS is just pulling their usual stunt, developers first, users second... which I happen to like wink

How about Windows® Spooge™?

Jun 27, 06 - 02:45 pm Comment from: jay

I'd like to see the Vista added stuff, too, but only to see how short it is. Maybe additions don't make the news, but you can bet if there was very much that's been added in the last FIVE YEARS, Ballmer would've been doing the monkey dance over it.

Jun 27, 06 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Verbose

Copland was Apple's Vista. Copland never made it. Apple almost sailed out of existance in the early 90's when they could not produce a "next-generation" operating system. It wasn't until Apple bought Next that they got started on OS X which was really just a ported version of the NextStep operating system.

Originally, NextStep only ran on x86 processors, so when Apple switched to Intel, it was no suprise that Apple claimed to have had an x86 version of OS X waiting, becuase that is the platform it came from.

Someone correct me if any of this is wrong (like I need to ask).

Jun 27, 06 - 03:49 pm Comment from: Schmutz!

I don't go to PC sites and troll, why do PC users feel it's ok to come to Mac sites and troll? With PC's and Linux controlling over 90% of the market, it seems kind of sad that trolls would spend time here. If you're that happy with your choice, good, so why must you come here to stir up the Mac faithful here? It's like the atheist that attacks church goers and churches, secretly hoping that they're not wrong.

Jun 27, 06 - 03:55 pm Comment from: LeftRearTire

Verbose, sounds the way I remember it, but don't forget Steve riding in on his white horse and having the guts to kill Copland.

That is what MS started out to do, completely rebuild Windows, no backwards compatibility, a new start, new standards and stronger security with lots of web apps that you rented.

The user base wasn't happy, the developer base wasn't happy, so MS flinched, the rest has been history. The same could happen to any company, Apple isn't immune.

VISTA - Maybe its an acronym for: Very Insane System To Acquire; or, Vaguely Inspired System, Thanks Apple; or, Vector Intuition System To be Announced; or, Victory Is Steve's 'Tis Apple's.

Oh well, I tried.

"Grow Up",
I don't get it... Really.

Verbose ...
Copland was more "mid to late 90's" like 95 - 97 ish
when it was finally canned

Remember Gil Amelio brought Jobs back and that didn't happen til 97.

Steve took over about the fall of 97.

Jun 27, 06 - 07:27 pm Comment from: BrooklynNYC

Just calling it "Microsoft Windows" is enough to doom it. MS has a reputation of providing crap and many people in IT know it - it's what they have to work with in these bassackward companies who have to use the Windows OS.

So, my recommendation is just to call it "Microsoft Windows ..." 'nough said.
