When will Google release Chrome for Mac OS X?
Monday, March 30, 2009 - 12:51 PM EST

"Back in September, Google launched its Chrome browser. With advanced features like website task managers, visual histories, individual browser memory management, and even the ability to re-open tabs that you accidentally closed, Chrome promised to reshape the browser, offering new abilities and capabilities that went beyond the status quo. Windows users got immediate access to those capabilities, but Google has yet to release Chrome for OS X and Linux," Erica Sadun reports for Ars Techinca.

"So when will Chrome OS X debut? 'We're working as fast as possible and progressing as fast as we can without compromising security,' Karen Grünberg told Ars. Although Google will not specify a target date, they assured us that they would be 'very surprised' and 'very unhappy' if fall came and went without a public beta. In the meantime, Google welcomes contributions to their open source project," Sadun reports.

Who cares? Safari 4 rocks!

Mar 30, 09 - 12:04 pm Comment from: LTD*

Another one is always nice, but we already have:

Safari (nothing else needed)
FireFox
Camino
Opera
Omniweb
Shiira
iCab
. . . and several others.

It will be nice to have Chrome, I guess, but nothing to write home about.

Safari 4? It wrecks the currency converter in dashboard.

Wandering Joe. Just use Unit Converter instead.

pfft.... they can release it or not... I'll never use it

How the heck is Google going to compete with Android if they can't even get a Mac version of Chrome out the door?

Mar 30, 09 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Chromatic

Chrome 'feels' faster than Safari. Possibly due to that hypnotic twirling loading symbol. Also feels lighter on the system, but I haven't tested that yet.

I also find it much more attractive with it's simplicity. I shall be waiting for it.

Why would I need Chrome when Web Kit for OSX is already available.

Mar 30, 09 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Mark S.

I agree with Willie G.
I'll never use it no matter when or if they release it.

Mar 30, 09 - 12:46 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

I don't mind the the Windows sufferers got it. They need better browsers to chose from. Safari is still the best. I love all the new CSS rules it adds that only work in WbKit browsers!

No need to hate.

Chrome is lighter than Safari 4, and has a superior interface. (In my opinion) Even Apple were apparently impressed, judging by the fact that Safari 4 borrows multiple aspects from Chrome, but seems to have made a slightly poorer implementation of them.

Eagerly awaiting.

Mar 30, 09 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Shadowself

Synthmeister, my thoughts exactly. It takes them about 15 months longer to ship a ***beta*** of Chrome on the Mac than it does on Windows. How often are upgrades going to happen for Android? Once every two or three years?

Oh dear god(s)!! Who cares!?!

Indeed it is your opinion, and not mine- I still haven't found how to access one's bookmarks without that ridiculous sidebar.

public beta - Google-speak for finished product

Mar 30, 09 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Security Guy

One of the big benefits of Chrome is that it separates each of the tabs in it's own process. That gives the user two things. First it separates any security issues. Second, if one tab fails, it doesn't break your entire browser.

Now, we might have some people who will say the Mac is totally secure. For them, I'd remind them of the Pwn2Own and how Safari got Pwnd. The Mac is far better than Windows, but this would just add a little more security.

Mar 30, 09 - 05:36 pm Comment from: silver surfer

Bottom line is Safari gets a 100% Acid3 Test.

@qka..... so true it's comical.

Why do I need Chrome if I use WebKit??? My faith in Google has been shaken as of late.

I wish the friggin' spinning beach ball of doom had that effect.

Mar 31, 09 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Wandering joe

@ ron,

That's the one I meant. All the currencies are screwed up. I think it has them in the wrong order. Everything else works fine, but being a stranger in a strange land means that I use it quite frequently.

Mar 31, 09 - 04:15 pm Comment from: macdave

Chrome? I couldn't care less. Safari works quite well, thank you.

Wow, there really are some zealots and haters on MDN. Those of you who said "who cares, I'll *never* use it" are no better than those Windows fanboys who say they'll never use a Mac, or IE fans who will never try any other browser.

Talk about closed minded confused

Safari 4 is good but, as others have pointed out, many features are copied from Chrome albeit not as well. Chrome's process separation would be most welcome, especially when you browse poorly designed or CPU intensive sites.
