Why Apple’s iPhone can’t be ‘killed’
Thursday, July 02, 2009 - 11:13 AM EST

Apple Online Store "Every few months, some new hopeful to the smartphone market will garner enough hype where various media outlets will dub it an 'iPhone killer,'" Brad Reed writes for Network World.

"The idea behind such pronouncements is that Apple's flagship device is ready to be toppled from its perch and that a new device is primed to take its spot atop the smartphone market. Every time the supposed 'iPhone killer' hits the market, however, its sales come in well below the iPhone's sales numbers," Reed writes.

"Consider the Palm Pre, the latest major device to win the dubious distinction of being dubbed a potential iPhone killer. During the device's debut weekend in the United States, analysts estimated that it sold between 50,000 and 100,000 units... [Apple's] new iPhone 3GS has sold more than 1 million units over the first two days of its availability," Reed reportss.

Reed writes, "The team at Palm shouldn't feel too bad about their comparatively weak sales numbers considering that other similarly hyped smartphones such as the BlackBerry Storm, the Samsung Instinct and the Android-based HTC G1 have also failed to slay the iPhone. This may leave device manufacturers scratching their heads and asking themselves what they need to do to topple the iPhone. The answer, at least in the short term, seems to be 'not too much.'"

RE: "This may leave device manufacturers scratching their heads and asking themselves what they need to do to topple the iPhone. The answer, at least in the short term, seems to be 'not too much.'""

The wording here is inaccurate. Instead of "what they need to do" it should be "what can they do".

They've lost the war, because the underlying issue has been solved by the iPhone. There is no iPhone killer until the next 5 years.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:20 am Comment from: Roomy

While I think there doesn't have to be a 'best' phone, and don't begrudge other companies from developing other products, I still remember when the iPhone was announced. These other companies laughed at it, insulted it and derided it even before anyone had a chance to actually try one. Now they can suck it. More crow, anyone?

Jul 02, 09 - 10:21 am Comment from: dd

As usual, the other companies are too busy looking for ways to make money by peddling shit that looks like an iPhone rather than making something that actually works and is of high quality.

The reality? Most phones would still be small-screened flip-phones had the iPhone never come to fruition. Because that's the extent of creativity by these other companies.

Well, they can shut down and give the money back to the shareholders.

The Pre is the poor man's iPhone.

It's not really the Pre, but the 1200 buck savings the carrier gives over 2 year contract compared to iPhone chief US carrier.

Of course if the screen cracks a week into ownership, savings doesn't matter all that much.

Jul 02, 09 - 10:40 am Comment from: HMCIV

Why iPhone can't be killed? Simple, it's not a living breathing sentient device... yet.

How can you kill... that which has no life?

Jul 02, 09 - 11:03 am Comment from: Tomas

Well I can tell you someone is sure trying hard to kill it. All the TV news channels in San Francisco and San Jose last night had news clips about iPhones getting very hot. They explained there was not a danger of fire because the phone is programmed to shut off at 113 degrees. Who is behind such a concerted effort? Was this typical nationwide? Most of them held up a white iPhone as they told the story. This is not good for sales or Apple stock.

The author is incorrect. There have been two iPhone killers (besides the iBrick)...

The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS both beat the iPhone

The Palm Pre is plastic sphincter

Jul 02, 09 - 11:38 am Comment from: Tomas

@Michael
No mention of iPhone on ATT ads because Steve does not want any of their crummy ads. He insists, rightly in my opinion, that Apple will do the iPhone ads, thank you. But why the clerks do not push iPhones is another question. In some ATT stores the iPhone display is stuck in a far corner.

My Wife said the Palm Pre: with it's keyboard open looks like a Maxi Pad. And you know it does, that is why it is named the Pre short for Premenstrual.

Jul 02, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: Shadow

Quit looking for iPod / iPhone killers. They exist and have been doing a good job for years. Apple regularly outdoes itself and introduction newer models which outperform the previous version. So stop looking and go out and buy a new Apple product.

Cheers

Devices like this get "killed" when the technology shifts; the iPod "killed" the WalkMan, the CD "killed" the cassette/ LP, etc…

The iPhone will be "killed" when some new breakthrough technology displaces it, not from a different, similar device.

..."It's not really the Pre, but the 1200 buck savings the carrier gives over 2 year contract compared to iPhone chief US carrier."...

Where on earth did you find those $1,200!!!??? The basic plans for Spring and AT&T are IDENTICAL ($70 per month). You could theoretically get to the $50 per month if you cranked up AT&T's voice and text plans to unlimited, but who in their sane mind would need to do that when there's rollover minutes (not to mention free mobile-to-mobile calls)?

The argument is preposterously weak.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:26 pm Comment from: here we go again

How many iPod killers where there? I remember there were lots, one after the other... where are they all, by the way?

Now we have the iPhone killers. Not.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:48 pm Comment from: k20z3

It's not the device per say. It's the software that supports it (iTunes). Add all the features, sell it for dirt cheap, give them away, as long as it doesn't have the easy of use and control as iTunes, it's doomed to fail.

Jul 02, 09 - 12:52 pm Comment from: ROFLCOPTER

Every few months? Every few days, more like it. It's incredibly tiresome.

Jul 02, 09 - 01:09 pm Comment from: Dallas

Yeah, you could compare the Pre to the iPhone, but I think a better comparison would be the Pre to all other Palm phones. The Pre has sold more devices and has a higher customer satisfaction than any other Palm Phone, ever. Congrats Palm.

Jul 02, 09 - 04:02 pm Comment from: MacGuy

Well, I just bought 2 new iPhones 3GS and they both had a horrible yellow screen, compared to my old 3G. I am reading that many other buyers are having the same problem.

It was so horrible that I went back to the store and asked them to replace my 3GS. The Genius was not friendly at all, had practically no time for me and first said he would replace the screen for me, but then emerged shortly after and told me that it did not fit.

After not going away for another 15 minutes, comparing my screen to other 3GS on display in the store, while he was attending other customers, I asked him to attend to me, after which he told me that he could replace mine for a new one, but he could not open the box to check the screen before I buy it.

So, I took a chance and had then replace it, it was a little better, but my screen still looks like someone pissed om my iPhone, everything has yellow tinge at the bottom half more than the top.

It looks horrible. I an reading on the Internet that other buyers have the same experience like me. Some are lucky and get a 3GS that in not yellow.

I am pissed to say the least and am considering to stick my old 3G until Apple can provide me with a screen for the most advanced handheld device that can live up to the standard of my Mac Plus 128k that I bought in 1984.

Want an IPhone killer? Picture this, 4.5"X3.25"X.20" OLED screen. 125 Gig flash, with touch screen keyboard, data and voice communication using WiMax protocol. 5 Mpixel auto focus camera with dynamic contrast enhancment (rather than flash to preserve battery life). 1500mah battery sealed factory replaceable. Plus all the current enhancement of the 3GS with a 1.5 GHZ dual core processor made by PA semi. The phone would work on Apples own network which could be either an outright purchase of the the world satellite phone Iridium assets, or start a network from scratch using low earth orbit (12 mile altitude) solar powered dirigibles with communication transponders. About 2000 units at $3 million a piece should be able to cover the entire planet. Apple would have their own data conduit based on the Wimax standard , and could tie their entire digital echo-sphere to it. If they could capture 2 % of world population as customers for just the phone that would be 120 million units, not to mention the potential halo effect on other products like Apple TV. With the entertainment and educational content on ITunes ... wow. The only problem would be breaching territorial communication standards world wide. Success of such a system would definitely kill the current IPhone iterations and probably a few telecoms around the world.

Jul 02, 09 - 04:18 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Well, it looks like the iPhones aren't only available in black or white. Depending on your luck you might end up with hot pink or piss yellow. Personally, I preferred the old fruit colored iMacs a lot more. smile

Jul 02, 09 - 04:33 pm Comment from: I'm a PC

1 million iphone units sold in it's first weekend isn't that big of a deal. I would consider that as a failure product by Apple which they failed to capture the audiences with their hidious phone. They can manipulate other people into buying their products except me. I would look at those iphone users and start to laugh knowing that only IDIOTS will buy Apple and genius like me buys a PC. I can't believe how users out there are easily manipulated by Apple false advertisements. *sigh* just sad for all Mac users out there that has no life of its own.

There will be an iPhone killer soon enough, and it will be made by Apple.

Jul 03, 09 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Lee

The Sprint plan pricing compares theirs to an AT&T;$149 plan. See the fineprint in the print ads. I, also, have no idea why, because my 450/data/unlim text is about $100.

Jul 07, 09 - 07:41 am Comment from: Hugh Jass

"It's not the device per say. It's the software that supports it (iTunes)."

Er, how about we update this a bit? Remember VZW's tagline 'A phone is only as good as the network it's on"?

and the ATT network is pathetic.... their so-called '3G' network gives you 2G data speeds 32% of the time (according to the PC World study) and abysmally s-l-o-w-e-r data speeds than Sprint or VZW even when the '3G' network is available.....

If it were just the software (i.e. iTunes) then you'd be talking about the Touch....

A comparison w/ the iPhone is not complete unless you include that basket-case of a network Apple chose to put it on... with their LIES of it being the 'Fastest 3G'... My Aunt Fanny! The iPhone is like an Aston Martin trying to cruise down an abandoned dirt road... LOL!

Jul 07, 09 - 07:46 am Comment from: Hugh Jass

Er, at the least the Pre is innovative enough to have induction charging...

where's this on the iPhone vs. the archaic cord Apple makes you plug the iPhone into to charge? The Pre just rests on a simple charging base...

C'mon Apple, it can't be that hard... my Braun toothbrush has had induction charging for over 10 years!
