Why is ‘Zoolander’ so popular on Apple’s iTunes Store?
Friday, March 21, 2008 - 05:22 PM EDT

"iTunes users must be hypnotized by his 'blue steel' gaze, because Zoolander has been hanging out in the Top 10 movies purchased on iTunes," Chris Albrecht reports for NewTeeVee. "Wait, what? An eight-year-old comedy is more popular than Ratatouille, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and High School Musical (parts 1 and 2)?"

Albrecht muses, "Either Ben Stiller is HUGE with iTunes users, or Apples sales are so low that it doesn’t take much to make it into the top 10. Zoolander isn’t even in the top 100 iTunes rentals."

"For comparison, the digital download of Zoolander ranks #339 on Amazon Unbox, and the Zoolander DVD ranks #1,830," Albrecht reports. "So why is Zoolander so darn popular on iTunes?"

I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being a really, really, ridiculously good selling movie.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Tony C

Boggles the mind! :O

I detested the horrid little brain-dead movie myself. :oP

Mar 21, 08 - 05:28 pm Comment from: dallas

I agree, the Buy the Movie option was a bad idea. SJ should have pushed for rentals all along.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:31 pm Comment from: Ampar

"I detested the horrid little brain-dead movie myself."

Yeah, but if Ben didn't make 'em, Christine Taylor would never get any work.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

quite enjoyed it myself.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: Passeryby

My theory is Mr Stiller hasn't figured out how to use his AppleTV yet and has been accidentally making multiple purchases of Zoolander.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: loki

people would probably prefer to purchase Ratatoullie or Pirates with the packaging and extras.
Zoolander would be easy to just buy and watch instead of being caught with the case on your DVD shelf!!

Mar 21, 08 - 05:41 pm Comment from: slappy

"I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being a really, really, ridiculously good selling movie."

@Ampar

LOL... you gotta love that line... Zoolander is one of those movies that you and your family can watch over and over again. Thats right, families. Not the typical basement living in their mothers house 40 year old Windows weenies watching from UNBOX or other internet video crappy services on the X-Box. grin

Mar 21, 08 - 05:47 pm Comment from: Wha?

Yeah, slappy, the group sex scene and drug use in Zoolander will go over great with my pre-teen kids.

I've always wondered how I'd get the chance to explain the meaning of "ménage a trios" to my 9-year-old daughter.

Or how to let my 7-year-old twins know that smoking Peyote for six straight days might make them think they're rappelling down Mount Vesuvius.

Thanks for the family film recommendation.

Mar 21, 08 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Macromancer

Stupid movie, but it was somewhat redeemed by the appearance of David Bowie.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:01 pm Comment from: Demon

I LMFAO at Zoolander!

Mar 21, 08 - 06:08 pm Comment from: posner

freak gasoline-fight accidents for all!

Mar 21, 08 - 06:11 pm Comment from: occams razor

Thriller vid has been in the top ten in the UK store since time began

Mar 21, 08 - 06:28 pm Comment from: slappy

@Wha

Your too uptight. LOL Of course you don't sit your 8 year old there. I guess I should have said teens as far as family is concerned... I guess I'm old. lol

Mar 21, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: bizlaw

Maybe it's just one of Steve Jobs' favorites, so he gave an order to keep Zoolander in the top 10 until further notice.

And we all know that the penalty for violating one of SJ's directives is far worse than anything Zoolander could inflict upon us.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:34 pm Comment from: jjjj

It was promoted during the Apple TV "Take 2" presentation.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:41 pm Comment from: mugwump

David Bowie cameo FTW.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:42 pm Comment from: Hagrid

Because we all want to be super models!

Mar 21, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: HazMatt

Yeah, not so much a kid-friendly movie (remembering the massage scene with the animitronic appendage under the sheet...)

But, I love the movie! (And we own the DVD)

Mugatu is my favorite character, especially whenever he says "That Hansel is so hot right now..." :D

Mar 21, 08 - 06:52 pm Comment from: k_shaw

Wow, he really rips apart iTunes and Zoolander. Lucky for them, no one really reads his NewTEEVEE magazine or whatever it's called.

@Passerby:
To help Ben Stiller (and others) use his Apple TV, Apple should start the "Apple Inc. Center for People Who Can't Operate Their Apple TVs Good, and Want To Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too."

I think it has potential.

Mar 21, 08 - 06:56 pm Comment from: CV

This article should be at least 3 times longer. What is it? Made for ants?!

Mar 21, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: MacBill

Um, Zoolander is an INFINITELY better movie than "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End" and the ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE "High School Musical". And it's better than Ratatouille too.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:09 pm Comment from: pr

There are only 4 movies worth watching on itunes..the catalog is so ridiculously (yes...that word again) small that it's no wonder a mediocre film from the brilliant Stiller would still be popular.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:10 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Obviously, iTunes seems to scape up some of the dregs.
Clearly, this is the downside of catering to Windows users.

How else can a detestable piece of garbage like Zoolander be in the iTunes top ten.

Fsck Windows. Bring back FireWire iPods!

Mar 21, 08 - 07:20 pm Comment from: Sarasota

Because every frat boy has to have his own copy?

Mar 21, 08 - 07:23 pm Comment from: photogjack

Zoolander's popularity shouldn't be a surprise. It's a perfect fit for the iTunes store demographic (or what I imagine that demographic to be), young men into gadgets and silliness. The same crowd that enjoyed the 40 Year Old Virgin or Family Guy. The scene in the office looking for the files, banging on the tangerine iMac, alone is worth the price of the movie. ("The files are in the computer." Trust me, it was funny)

Plus it's easy to watch on an iPod's small screen. And it was a much better movie than PotC or HS Musical. Both of which were terrible. Commercial success doesn't equal quality.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: Stygeon

So... the movies are IN the computer?

Mar 21, 08 - 07:42 pm Comment from: Sixvodkas

Sorry dallas, but I can't find anyone here that agrees with you, and neither me, nor my friends, have rented a single movie yet.
I have, however, bought several.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:43 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Ben Stiller, I don't find you funny.

Oh! Well, you're very, uh... you're very, uh... kind.

At all.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:43 pm Comment from: Jay-Z

I've got two words for you, sugar: ZIP DISK!

IT'S A CASSEROLE, SHEILA! IT'LL STAY!

Mar 21, 08 - 07:45 pm Comment from: Spark

Ben Stiller can be seen using the 3G iPhone in Zoolander. I loved it.

Mar 21, 08 - 07:48 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

I'm sure having Zoolander appear on all those iPod commercials didn't hurt.

@loki
Your probably right.

@Passeryby
You're may also be right

Mar 21, 08 - 07:50 pm Comment from: n-dru

You want an opinion? With a push-up bra you could have a nice rack of lamb up there.

Mar 21, 08 - 08:19 pm Comment from: Dolita

Someone must tickle me to laugh when watching Zoolander. Its low-level humour is not funny at all.

"Maybe it's just one of Steve Jobs' favorites, so he gave an order to keep Zoolander in the top 10 until further notice.

And we all know that the penalty for violating one of SJ's directives is far worse than anything Zoolander could inflict upon us."

totally agree!

Mar 21, 08 - 08:20 pm Comment from: phantasmosxmagnum

Hmm, is it plausible that it's been on the 99 cent iTunes Movie of the Week every week?! LOL

Mar 21, 08 - 08:32 pm Comment from: Priused

Geez, now I have to go rent Zoolander.

Mar 21, 08 - 08:34 pm Comment from: Fitz

And "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" isn't even available on DVD - let alone downloadable. The horror of it all.

Mar 21, 08 - 08:44 pm Comment from: TowerTonne

me is big pooo

Mar 21, 08 - 08:44 pm Comment from: shen

@macbill

Better than ratatouile? Seriously? Cause I figure I can ignore everything you say for the rest of time if you really mean that......

Mar 21, 08 - 09:09 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Commercial success doesn't equal quality."

Where have I heard that before?

wink

Mar 21, 08 - 10:59 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Every irritating Grateful Dead/Phish fan you meet.

Mar 21, 08 - 11:21 pm Comment from: Mister Snitch

Jobs actually mentioned Zoolander at an event demonstrating Apple TV. It got a giggle from the audience.I don't know if that accounts for these sales, though.

Mar 21, 08 - 11:37 pm Comment from: Macintosh

That's a movie someone can watch many times... So it's worth buying (plus it's not available to rent).

Mar 22, 08 - 02:01 am Comment from: matt

Mur Man!

Mar 22, 08 - 02:57 am Comment from: Crabs

I love that show, although, I will admit, I feel that every time I watch it, I get 10 times stupider (bad grammar intended)

Mar 22, 08 - 08:14 am Comment from: flappo

everyone knows old films are all crap anyway

who needs the godfather or citizen kane when we can have police academy 18 or the masterwork that is good luck chuck ?

Mar 22, 08 - 09:32 am Comment from: cb

I rented it for me and the kids. It's a silly movie with a cute message and great cast. Ben Stiller plays this type of character with grace and ease.

Same type of movie as Joe Dirt - which we laugh at every time we watch it. (yes - I skip over the your my sister?!?)

Mar 22, 08 - 10:00 am Comment from: Ray

Zoolander is a nerdy guilty pleasure. Now that you don't have to be seen at the Blockbuster renting it....

Just my $0.02

Mar 22, 08 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Ha Ha Ha

"Obviously, iTunes seems to scape up some of the dregs."

We call those dregs Apple Fanboys.

Mar 22, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Mer-man

odd, the funniest parts of Zoolander got deleted from the movie itself. Well, at least they're all on the xtras/deleted scenes on the DVD. BTW, didn't Zoolander premiere on 9/11...or some days just after?
