Why the heck is Woz standing in line for an Apple iPhone?
Friday, June 29, 2007 - 09:10 AM EDT

"When it comes to landing an iPhone, Apple Inc.'s other famous Steve plans to stand in line. Steve Wozniak helped Steve Jobs launch Apple more than 30 years ago, sparking a computing revolution. But the man known to many as Woz, who left the company in 1987, planned to queue up outside a San Jose Apple store at 4 a.m. today in hopes of getting his hands on one," Michelle Quinn and Alana Semuels report for The LA Times.

"'I love to see the future early,' he said," Quinn and Semuels report.

"Apple is controlling the iPhone's exposure as if it were a movie star before a blockbuster's opening day. The Cupertino, Calif., company doled out a small number to a carefully chosen group of reviewers — most of whom have raved about it. Silicon Valley legends, Wall Street analysts, Hollywood insiders and others used to getting the latest hot gadget before the masses have been forced to scramble for one," Quinn and Semuels report.

"'Lots of people have requested iPhones,' an Apple spokeswoman said. 'No one is getting any special treatment,'" Quinn and Semuels report.

"Wozniak doesn't have to join the masses in front of the mall. He says Jobs recently called and said Apple would send him an iPhone, to arrive Saturday. But his desire to have one immediately — plus some for his three children — prompted his plan to stand in an hours-long line for the first time since 1972, when he coveted Rolling Stones concert tickets," Quinn and Semuels report.

"He and friends will hand out T-shirts that read, 'The Line Begins Here,' and he'll have his Segway Human Transporter for bathroom runs. 'This is more a celebration,' he said," Quinn and Semuels report.

Good lord! With the amount of power the iPhone gives him, Steve Jobs could take over the whole world!

Do you think the "2 per person"
rule will apply? If so, 2 of his 3 children will be sorely disappointed.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:17 am Comment from: banjo

Woz is an exceptionally creative loon

Jun 29, 07 - 09:20 am Comment from: Chris ][

He was promised to receive one on Saturday, but he'll stand in line to get one on Friday -- ONE day earlier? Unless he's really completely insane, I'm sure it's more just to have fun with the crowds and this event. At least, I sure hope so.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:26 am Comment from: Tyk

I'm just glad to read that Jobs offered to send him one... I was reading it thinking that Woz wasn't getting one and that's why he had to stand in line!
Woz is just out there.... I think that's what makes him so endearing.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:34 am Comment from: Macaday

Why do you think...he's soaking up the atmosphere. So would I if I was 6,000 miles closer...!

Jun 29, 07 - 09:35 am Comment from: Marketing Man

All a publicity stunt.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:38 am Comment from: critic

"Why do you think...he's soaking up the atmosphere. So would I if I was 6,000 miles closer...!"

So would I if I was Woz and didn't have to work for a living.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:41 am Comment from: bluefine

Hey bdb,

How come you don't count his children?

According to my math, Woz can walk out with 8
2 each for him and the 3 kids.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:43 am Comment from: MacRaven

You just gotta love Woz. Wanting to experience life in "the trenches" with the rest of the MacFaithful.

Oh, how I wish I had his stock shares in Apple.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:46 am Comment from: hotinplaya

I think its great, and would be so frackin neat, if Jobs stopped by a few stores and walked the crowd, this evening.

make the iWait, really worth while , if you got to meet Steve J

Jun 29, 07 - 09:48 am Comment from: M@c

To believe that Woz does not already have an iPhone is just silly. Come on now people.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:49 am Comment from: god delusional

woz is a plonker............. segway??? just goes to show that just because some one got lucky once does not now make them an expert on all things techo.....

@macRaven

Does anyone know, how many or what % of aapl he owns, I hope its a bunch

Jun 29, 07 - 09:50 am Comment from: AXX

Sounds like a party to me.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:55 am Comment from: shen

"Do you think the "2 per person" rule will apply?"

all i can say is that if the person who waits on him in an APPLE STORE doesn't recognize him and bow down before asking what he wants and then give him as many as he wants, they need to be fired immediately!

MDN take, enough said.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:58 am Comment from: K. Brown

Woz is the best.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:59 am Comment from: @god delusional

Wow, did your mommy forget to give you your meds today.

Your comment is not only baseless but also ill informed and inaccurate. Woz's success and thus the very being of Apple Computer has much to do with Woz's technical capabilities.

Jun 29, 07 - 09:59 am Comment from: Spark

Hey! I went to that Stones concert in '72! Stevie Wonder was the "warm-up act"; can you believe it? It's great to discover that there is now an official connection between Woz and myself (however tenuous).

Jun 29, 07 - 10:07 am Comment from: rancher

Hey, Spark - I saw that tour stop in Minneapolis. It was beyond great. Stones were young, wonder was a wonder - they jammed together at the end - no Woz but they did have a riot outside the concert hall and there was teargas in the air when we left. The only good Stones concerts have tear gas involved.
Best concert ever was the early Floyd - after the release of Dark Side at the Cow Palace in Chicago tho -

Jun 29, 07 - 10:09 am Comment from: Wildcat Slim

Get this.

The mayor of Philadelphia, John Street, is standing in line to get one. When interviewed this morning, he said that he will conduct city business from the line.

It's nice to see the mayor take time away from his busy schedule of taking bribes and handing out no-bid contracts. Putz. He's a lame duck so no one will berate him for wasting the taxpayer $$$.

In short, the iPhone is HUGE.

Jun 29, 07 - 10:15 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

"I rather be a lamp post in New York than mayor of Philadelphia."

Got lucky? Please try not to speak any longer. You're not delusional, you're simply ignorant to facts. However, it is entertaining to find someone like you who is more than happy to rant on about a subject you obviously know absolutely nothing about.

Jun 29, 07 - 10:34 am Comment from: sad but true

Woz is a media whore.

Jun 29, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

He is just starting the Woz hype...better than the beer belly hype. The media will jump on it and it will do nothing but help the Apple hype. His live interviews should be interesting. I wish Steve Jobs would go to a few stores and shake hands with a few people in line, but it would be a madhouse and you would have to hire a SWAT team...but it would be cool and positive.

Jun 29, 07 - 10:40 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

"I think that's what makes him so endearing."

Or gutting a buck and jamming your head inside.
That's endearing.

I stopped by the u-Village store on my way in this morning. There were maybe 20-30 people outside, and a news van. I took some pics that I'll try to get posted if I can find a bloody camera cable.

Hey Chrissy... nice pics.

Didn't know you were in Seattle.... I live about 10 minutes from the U-Village store.

Good luck getting your hands on an iPhone (if you're one of those standing in line). I'll have to wait as I'm away on vacation right now.

Take care...
