Why the inclusion of ‘Blu-ray’ in iTunes 8.2 beta doesn’t mean Blu-ray disc playback
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 04:05 PM EDT

"Thanks to the fine-toothed comb that the Mac faithful run over their updates, readers of MacRumors noticed a passage contained within the iTunes 8.2 beta 'About iTunes' window that references DVD and Blu-ray," Tim Conneally reports for Betanews,

"This does not mean iTunes will be able to read or recognize Blu-ray Discs," Conneally reports. "Gracenote VideoID does not need the disc to be present to identify content."

Conneally reports, "Now that the iTunes store is beginning to carry high-definition video in greater concentration, all this fine print means is that the film's information either on playback or in the iTunes store itself could have been pulled from Gracenote's immense database."

But does it mean it will be snappier?

Couldn't it mean that iTunes will support Blu-ray playback (from an external device), but not actually have a Blu-ray drive in the computer? Maybe you could play a Blu-ray disc from a networked Blu-ray player on your iMac or on a TV connected to an AppleTV.

Guessing is so much fun!

What about recognizing Blu-Ray burners/readers so you could back up content to blank Blu-Ray discs from within iTunes.

Or what about this:

what if it is simply providing support for people who rip blu-ray? Just like ripping a CD to your library, iTunes finds the titles. Perhaps the same with ripped blu-ray?

BlueRay is coming, it just took Apple waiting until the defeat of HD-DVD.

YEA TAKE THAT YOU MICROSOFT LOVING X-BOX DWEEBS!!

Now that is all over with I look forward to a 17" matte screen MacBook Pro with BlueRay DVD and SSD drive.

Yep, that's my next upgrade machine. For sure!

Naturally Apple has to incorporate the BlueRay movie DRM schemes into Mac's, but that will come.

And Apple, will YOU PLEASE ALLOW DVD BURING AROSS MULTIPLE DISKS!

Also will you please allow burning multiple disk images to a DVD/CD?

It's such a waste of plastic = oil. Go green!!

Now that the "bag of hurt" licensing for Blu-ray has been resolved, I fully expect Apple to support playback and recording. It's simply too early in the game to go completely digital. Plus, people want to back up stuff.

How can steve jobs say Blu ray is a big bag of hurt, when negotiating licensing and contracts for digital distribution of movies and tv shows for different countries is far more difficult.

Open up DVD player from Applications and open prefs. Last window, High Definition. The superdrive has never been a HD player so what does that mean?

Hey Mark,

I'm guessing your question was rhetorical. However if you click on the '?" icon it talks about Hi Definition DVD's. I'm no expert, but I guess it's possible to burn H-Def video onto DVD. You just won't get as much runtime as a Blu-ray disk.

Hey Mark,

Just looked on the web and found this.

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/blu-ray-authoring/74498-hd-content-burned-onto-standard-dvd-playable-either-hd-dvd-blu-ray-players.html

Looks like it is possible to encode HD (2 days for 90 mins, phew) onto DVD and playback on a Mac (via 'DVD PLayer'), but the same DVD won't play back on a Bu-ray or HD-DVD player.

Oh well you win some..... you loose some... looks as if Apple had there eye on HD for some time now, but couldn't get the Big boys to play ball. Now the game has been won and with iTunes market share it's perhaps been easier to negotiate though a 'world of pain'.
