Windows 7 Ultimate on Apple’s new MacBook Pro (with video)
Monday, November 03, 2008 - 03:44 PM EST

"Here we are sitting in the PC Magazine Labs, and it occurs to us: We've got a shiny new Macbook Pro and an early build of Windows 7 on disc, so why not attempt to use one to run the other? Using Bootcamp, we did a clean install of the new OS over Vista, which was already running on the system. We couldn't just upgrade because the Macbook wasn't running SP1," Brian Heater reports for Gearlog.

"All in all, the installation process went fairly smoothly," Heater reports. "After installation, we installed the drivers via the Apple OS X startup disc, hoping that Windows 7 might have an easier time communicating with the hardware."

"The disc didn't do much, sadly. The system was unable to get online, and various other Windows 7 features, such as the mouseover preview, were disabled," Heater reports. "Windows 7 still retained some of its key functionality, however..."

Isn't that a bit like putting naked lady mud flaps on a Lexus?

It's not even intriguing. It's just plain wrong.

Nov 03, 08 - 03:50 pm Comment from: Cubert

Too bad they can't film it straight on so you can see Winblows 7 in all its sucky glory, but I guess the screen is too glossy for that.

Oh crap.....

Nov 03, 08 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Richie

Hate that gloss screen

Nov 03, 08 - 03:52 pm Comment from: John

@MDN: you stole my line!

smile

Nov 03, 08 - 03:53 pm Comment from: Cubert

And, are they still sticking with the dozen different flavors of Winblows for 7? They all taste like $#!t to me.

Nov 03, 08 - 03:55 pm Comment from: ericdano

And now they say next Fall they are going to unleash it and Windows Mobile 7? 2009 is going to suck.

Nov 03, 08 - 03:55 pm Comment from: HolyMackerel

They're not going to fool me again - that's just Mojave!

Nov 03, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: John

and damn, that glossy screen makes we want to puke. Bleh...

Nov 03, 08 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Mikey McWhiner

Glossy screens, boooo!!

Me no likey... wahahahaaaa...

Get a matte film and StFU.

Nov 03, 08 - 04:03 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

"Interesting". Couldn't actually SEE much, kind of dark and small. And watching a movie of someone else navigating through a bunch of "options" that you couldn't care much about isn't all that informative.
They didn't seem to be taking the software all that seriously, seemed to think it was an early Beta of software that would have a job of it trying to prove itself. "Windows Seven Ultimate", though? They will again be selling multiple versions to multiple markets? With multiple sets of requirements sporting various feature set levels? I thought they were going to be "focusing", "slimming", "smoothing" ... maybe not so much. Apple has three versions of OSX - iPhone, consumer, server. The difference between the consumer and the server versions is more about included "third party apps" than about the OS being somehow different. The iPhone version needs to be slimmed to the max to run on the mini-me processor used, not so much about being "different".
Maybe the Windows folk will find Vista v2.0 easier to swallow.

Nov 03, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: PaKo

Does "ultimate" mean that MS is done after this? I hope so.

I really do.

I am on my iPhone and AT&T;service is stopping me from viewing the video.

Nov 03, 08 - 04:15 pm Comment from: Flippert

This is really why you would need anti-malware protection for your mac

Nov 03, 08 - 04:55 pm Comment from: JohnLee

Would you matte screen guys get some matte film and quit your bitching? Have any of you actually given a glossy screen a fair test? If you would all do that, we would hear a lot less bitching.

Nov 03, 08 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Kevin

A: Windows on a Mac

Q: What's the opposite of putting lipstick on a pig??

Nov 03, 08 - 05:07 pm Comment from: twinkie

God, I just HATE the glossy screen on my touch!!

Waaaah!

Nov 03, 08 - 05:08 pm Comment from: Randian

@JohnLee

Anti-glossy bitching has become a religion among the small minority of users who prefer (need?) the matte screen. Oh, their voices would seem to be legion and deafening throughout the land, but as Apple has already revealed, matte screen orders were becoming smaller and smaller in number, hence the removal of the option.

Make no mistake here or in your local pub: Mention politics, religion, or glossy screens and you will certainly get an earful. Myself, I prefer to ignore all three issues as I write this on my beautiful (glossy) iMac 24" 3.06 GHz.

Nov 03, 08 - 05:18 pm Comment from: coolfactor

"OS Ex!" Typical dufuses.

Nov 03, 08 - 05:24 pm Comment from: jarrettdailynews

Damn, speaking of politics, have we choosen which 3 americans are going to the poles tomorrow to vote? Why 3 you ask, well, just like with rock, paper, plyers, you only need 2 out of 3 to win, so lets pick our 3 so we can get on with it. Then we need 3 more to decide which religous "cult" is the true way to God/Ala. Then after that we will have the death match for the glossy/matte battle.

Nov 03, 08 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Sarah

You know what the difference between Windows Vista and Windows 7?

Lipstick!

Nov 03, 08 - 05:54 pm Comment from: Arghhhh my eyes!

Horrible reflective screen. How is a designer supposed to work on such a thing?!

Nov 03, 08 - 06:00 pm Comment from: iLuvMyMacs

Did you hear them at the end of the video... "There you have it- Windows 7 kind of, sort of running."

Well- that's pretty much what you'll hear in 2013 or whenever thing thing comes out- "Kind of, Sort of running"

More "Im a Mac - I'm a PC" ads on their way.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:01 pm Comment from: Another mirror for the house

"Anti-glossy bitching has become a religion among the small minority of users who prefer (need?) the matte screen."

You mean like most designers? You mean like people who use computers for more than just spreadsheets and checking their emails? You mean professionals in the visuals field where the accuracy of what they see is actually important?

Matte film my ass. I'm guessing you wouldn't get many people at Pixar or Dreamworks trying to animate on one of those horribly reflective screens.

"I just have to get Buzz Lightyear to fall d... oh god I really do need to have a shave"

You'd be amazed how much high end work is done on portables.

You fools who think matte screen don't matter would believe Steve Jobs if he said Oxygen was no longer important!

Nov 03, 08 - 06:03 pm Comment from: OS X User

Sweet! Unlike the sheep, many of us aren't close-minded. Welcome MS, it's gonna be fun!

Nov 03, 08 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Jim

What a bunch of shit heads. Did you watch the video?

"... using the Mac OS X (pronounced "ex") disk..."

They're not even people who use or understand Mac OS X (pronounced correctly as "ten").

What was funny was how they're talking about Vista and the "old Aero" interface. HA HA HA. I've never even USED Vista yet and they're talking about it as it's ancient news.

Microsoft is screwed and I couldn't think of a more deserving company than them to crash and burn.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:27 pm Comment from: clunker

Isn't that a bit like putting naked lady mud flaps on a Lexus?

Worse.

It's like towing an overfull Microsoft port-a-potty with a Lexus.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: confused

"The disc didn't do much, sadly. The system was unable to get online, and various other Windows 7 features, such as the mouseover preview, were disabled," Heater reports. "Windows 7 still retained some of its key functionality, however..."

....such as what? Booting up, only to not work as promised?

Indeed, just like Vista. Only more so.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@Randian: Perfect summary of the glossy/matte issue. Many will try, but few, if any, can refute you in a substantive manner.

Nov 03, 08 - 06:40 pm Comment from: rdbvideo

I could care less about this.
I only looked at a few seconds to see how bad the glossy screen was... and bad it was!!

Just here to bitch about glossy screens.
:-p

Nov 03, 08 - 06:50 pm Comment from: shen

can't wait till my check comes and I can get my new notebook and bitch about the glossy screen. I feel left out.

Nov 03, 08 - 07:05 pm Comment from: shmack

seems to run very snappy!

Nov 03, 08 - 07:50 pm Comment from: jackdawsson

Screw Windows 7... that glossy screen could be a deal-breaker for many Mac users.

Nov 03, 08 - 08:14 pm Comment from: Missy Pants

I call it "Oh Eh Sex".
Because I like saying "Oh Eh Sex".
And I like the sound of "Oh Eh Sex".

Nov 03, 08 - 08:19 pm Comment from: Chris Rose

I was planning on getting the new 17" MacBook Pro (when it came out) to replace my almost two year old one - but if it has a glossy screen I sure as hell won't get it. I'll buy the current model instead..

Steve sure got it wrong this time.

Deal breaker for me - a Mac user since 1984!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nov 03, 08 - 09:27 pm Comment from: tt

Those two sound like total fags.

Fuck Microsoft.

Nov 04, 08 - 04:57 am Comment from: Nathan

WHY WON'T VISTA DRIVERS WORK ON VISTA2? Seriously. Why can Microsoft NOT get it into their thick skulls that we don't want driver issues? Hardware should just work. I think that because there is so much disparity in the Windows world in machine builds it becomes an issue, but with Macintosh everything is manufactured in house so it only makes sense that everything would work because they built it.

LOL! WTF is the "throw up" feature? Another gimmick I take it, and poorly named at that. Who actually maximizes windows? Maybe when you have a netbook sized screen…maybe. And windows users I suppose. One of my old friends used to have this thing where he would actually use the F11 full screen mode of IE6/7…i laughed a little, especially when he couldn't get PDFs to open correctly in the browser. :p Yet another failure of Microsoftie.

Nov 04, 08 - 07:29 am Comment from: Twenty Benson

What's reflected in that MBP glossy screen is FAR uglier than the Windows 7 interface it is obscuring.

It is quite staggering how Apple has cocked up BIG TIME on this. Jobs likes to boast about using no focus groups in the Apple design process... but we can see with these poor quality glossy screens where such a focus group might have avoided a HUGE, HUGE blunder.

What makes it even worse is that there is no fix for it.

Nov 04, 08 - 09:34 am Comment from: hagar57

"Windows 7 still retained some of its key functionality, however..."
That's a euphemism saying the system crashed.

Nov 04, 08 - 09:37 am Comment from: @ MDN

You can say that again.

This is what the folks that put off vista have coming down the crap shoot, Microshit is in even more trouble than everyone thought.

Nov 04, 08 - 10:30 am Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

Hey, all you glossy screen haters,

Either buy a matte film, similar to what I have for my iPhone, install it, and get on with life.

Or. Get some 000 grit sandpaper and sand away on your glossy screen.

Definitely more heat than light regarding this subject.

Nov 04, 08 - 10:46 am Comment from: MacFhearghaile

If you don't like glossy screens buy a PC, the rest of the world doesn't care you dumb ass.
