Windows XP booting on an Intel-based Mac?
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - 11:03 AM EST

"It looks like someone may have finally gotten Windows XP booting on an Intel-based Mac. narf2006 posted a series of photos in his Flickr account, showing what appears to be XP Pro booting up on an iMac Core Duo," Mac on Intel reports. "Some are holding out for verification of this alleged achievement, given the difficulties involved in finding true victory. We will keep everyone posted on the latest surrounding this news."

Full article here.

"We're still a little dubious about this one, but word is out that one narf2006 has successfully installed Windows XP on an Intel iMac, has gotten it to boot (despite the EFI issue, and apparently after extensive hacking), and is now asking for volunteers to test his process on other Intel-based Macs. And that last bit is really what has us thinking this may be more than just the latest Photoshop art project," Marc Perton writes for Engadget.

Full article here.

and after celebrating his achievment Narf realised he had ruined a perfectly good computer "Doh!"

Mar 14, 06 - 11:17 am Comment from: Buster

The masses will only be convinced when he duplicates XP's blue screen of death.

I have one better. I have booted OS X on my new XBOX 360, and everything works.

Mar 14, 06 - 11:19 am Comment from: Schmutz!

Windows on the Mac OS running on Intel processors... too surreal. Kind of like trying to achieve perfection through mediocrity. Sad

Now I can run those virtual porn games on my macbook that I used to have. My life just got a whole lot sweeter.

Oh C'mon! it aint't that bad, you know you want it! Once Vista ships you won't need your apple computers anyway.

Maybe Thurrott can keep his iMac now.

Mar 14, 06 - 11:48 am Comment from: marko

that's not true PC Everywhere. because we'll have Leopard, then MS will have another superior OS to try and copy although it will take them 5+ years to do so and still wont get it right.
Rememberht e old sayings , windows when you have to, Mac when you want to.

Another classic was Windows 98 equals Macintosh '84
Shall we keep going ???

big surprise

Mar 14, 06 - 11:52 am Comment from: mike k.

Observers will interpret interest in getting Windows on a Mac as evidence for interest in Windows.

i really hope those Darwine people beat this to market. Windows apps without Windows is where the real interest is.

Does anyone have any real numbers on how big a segment of the computer buying world gamers actually represent?

Mar 14, 06 - 11:53 am Comment from: splat

from what I'm hearing it's easier to hack OS X on a generic PC box than it is to hack XP to play on an intel Mac

"victory"? Interesting choice of words for fsking up your Mac and exposing your home or office to the disease that is winblows.

Mar 14, 06 - 12:46 pm Comment from: LordRobin

LOL... It takes all kinds to make a world. On the comments on the Engadget site there's someone raving about how great this is, because he loves Mac hardware but hates the OS! I need to get him in the same room with the folks who desperately want the OS, but think Mac hardware is nothing special.

Mar 14, 06 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Heidi

I have successfully booted Windows on my 2004 GE washing machine.

Known for their innovation GE has repeatedly stated they will not interfere with booting MicroSoft out the Window.

In a follow up GE confirmed they are working on a next generation iPod killer, unique industrial design integrates the music player hardware and software in an automatic drip coffee maker.

GE CEO states "after significant research we found that consumers did want an alternative form factor and we think the coffeemaker is the perfect launching point because so many people spend so much time near their coffee maker, especially in the morning". Shares of AAPL traded down 11 % following news of this latest competition in the music market place for the beleagured computer manufacturer.

I understand you have to use windows apps because your job requires it. What I don't understand is what are you doing here with all the Mac Fanatics?

Mar 14, 06 - 01:21 pm Comment from: TurnOverYourDone

Okay, kenh. We get to some may need to run Windows apps, I am one of those people. However, why is it you have to run Windows on a Mac? Point is, why try to run apps on a computer they were never intended for. This would be like having Metallica play at a honky tonk. Not well received at all.

Need to run Windows apps? Buy a Windows PC. Problem Solved!

Mar 14, 06 - 01:28 pm Comment from: TenaciousDNA

AMAZING! If this were true, it would be incredible...

Now maybe someone will work on getting it to run on a PC (for any length of time tongue wink )

BTW Heidi: Hilarious. Thanks.

Probably the same thing I'm doing here.
I'm an urban designer, i love my macs and yes, i've got ONE PC to run MicroStation CAD-software.

Mar 14, 06 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

I'm not really interested anymore if someone can boot Windows on a Mac. It really isn't a step forward.

But, I can see the advantage of having Windows running inside of Guest PC or VPC at native speed. THAT would be an improvement.

Other than that. Who cares?

Mar 14, 06 - 01:38 pm Comment from: Johan Simons

Strange going on topic. I would me much more interested in a successful boot of OSX on a Dell-machine.

Mar 14, 06 - 02:06 pm Comment from: ken

Remember that the last version of the G4 iMac looks exactly like the Mactel iMac from the front. He could have easily put VPC on the G4 and gone to full screen. I have to use VPC from time to time and can have 2000 Pro at full screen on a 23" display - buy why ruin the display . . .

Mar 14, 06 - 02:13 pm Comment from: editg5

some things I just can't understand..I mean, I know the reason why some small PC users want XP or whatever on their Mac's...but I just don't understand it..this is horrible news.

More like a dirty hat on a silk pig. But still, for some people (myself included), Windows is a necessary evil.

The day that I can do everything that is work related on my Mac will be the first day of the rest of my life...

Mar 14, 06 - 02:50 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I think it's funny whenever I see people post ridiculous things like, "If you're a true Mac fan, you shouldn't have a job that requires you to use Windows."

Guess what... My job requires me to use Windows, and the income that it gives me allows me to afford my Macs.

MW: Run. Wow. It's positively eerie sometimes.

Mar 14, 06 - 03:06 pm Comment from: Wade

Hey, any mountain will be climbed- that's human nature. Much more satisfying to me is the people who are booting OSX on their POS Thinkpads and Dells. A good thing deserves favor, and distribution. Any chance Cupertino will desire their OS to be everywhere? So far, it don't look like it. The MacOSx86 project keeps getting attacked. Yeah, I've got a Thinkpad here that runs OSX. Nicely. Much more of a thing to celebrate, getting rid of windoze in all its forms. I've never, actually, ever personally needed any microsoft program except for IE, and only then to access two specific, work-related sites. One of those sites grew up, the other is still sucking the teat.

Buy a Windows PC? Uh............No, for reasons self evident to most of us.

Why not just calm down and run an app you need on a computer that will run it, like a Mac that runs Virtual PC, which is what I do, and it runs just fine.

The point is I don't get all emotional about it as some of you do.

Why am I here? Sometimes I wonder: just happen to be a Mac user since 1988 who thinks I own the best computer in the world, and I don't need to become ideological about it.

Only occasionally do I lose control of my emotions in response to those whose emotions seem out of control constantly , as when some of you berate those of us who are not ideologically pure enough for you.

If I could just boot up Windows directly, I would use it when I need it and then get off it..no problem, and no emotional involvement.

So why am I here? I suppose I like to watch train wrecks, perverse of me as it is.

Have a nice day.

Bah-humbug.... Call me when you get Mac OS X 10.4.5 installed on an off-the-shelf platform running a dual core AMD 64-bit processor.

Don't waste your time getting Windows XP on a dual-core Intel 32-bit box.

Geeeezzz...
