Woz says Apple’s iPod has run its course
Tuesday, October 07, 2008 - 03:41 PM EDT

"In an exclusive interview with the Telegraph, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak wonders how long the iPod can stay on top spot, laments the limitations of the iPhone 3G, agrees with the downgrade on Apple shares and believes that Web 2.0 revolution has been over-financed and could lead to mini-crash in technology stocks," Rupert Neate reports for The Telegraph.

Read Neate's full interview with Woz here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "MacVicat" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Take: As Neate notes, Woz "has been 'basically retired' from Apple since 1987." 'Nuff said.

Really?!
And I was just about to buy another iPod Touch.
Well, guess I'll get me a Sansa-Something, or one of them bleeding-edge Zune-a-ma-bobbies that are so cool, even the kids haven't caught on to 'em yet ...
(I heard they're "Crack-a-lackin'" !)

Look... I love Woz... LOVE HIM. He's the reason I use a computer... but seriously. Woz... you've been out of touch in tech for the past 15 years.

But I still love Woz. smile

Oct 07, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Hmm, the headline is not quite was was written in the article:

I begin to wonder whether he was even briefed by the Apple press office when he predicts the imminent death of the company's most popular product, the iPod.

"The iPod has sort of lived a long life at number one," he says. "Things like, that if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they kind of die out after a while.

"It's kind of like everyone has got one or two or three. You get to a point when they are on display everywhere, they get real cheap and they are not selling as much."

He doesn't really say that the iPod has run its course.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:04 pm Comment from: Pete

Please people, be considerate. Times are tough. People will say anything for money. Woz must have lost his polo shirt.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

Woz has ran his course. grin

"a mini-crash in technology stocks"

Is that on top of the Wall Street Collapse of everything or is this something else?

Oct 07, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: CheeseWozOnACracker

With out Steve Jobs Woz would be stuck in some dead-end middle management job overseeing the the next failed product at HP.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Thank you Tower Tone, for injecting your political opinion in yet another Mac-related forum. Look back at today's forums. For nearly every story on Mac Daily News, you can see some loser bitter Republican making some political statement. Great, I guess we can look forward to this for another 4-8 years? Please, keep your bitter whining to yourselves, or take it to a political forum.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Demon

I love Woz. But he's been out of touch with the industry too long and he doesn't understand the consumer electronics industry at all. If the iPod were strictly a computer device he night be close to correct but, the iPod is the replacement for the CD Player, in peoples home, car and personal entertainment systems. The next phase in the iPod evolution has not been released on the world. Apple does have a plan and a schedule that only the top people know but, there is an evolution plan, expect it to start playing out in the next few years.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:24 pm Comment from: Bob Nies

Really strange commentary... who believes that iPods will stop selling by the millions for the forseeable future. They will continue to evolve on the high end.

Clearly on the low end we are at base and who will compete on price when Apple has such tremendous leverage based on scale... assumes that capacity will continue grow per industry standards.

Whole article is a puff piece that says nothing that everyone already knows.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:25 pm Comment from: x

Ahhhh. I just farted.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:29 pm Comment from: Cracker please . . .

I see his point. The walkman was the shiznit. But where the Walkman and iPod begin to no longer share parallels is that the Walkman was a dead end. How much can you do with a tape player? Add radio. Auto reverse. Oh yeah, base boost. What's left? Nothing. New cases, slimmer look. Yup, forgot EQ. That was huge.

The iPod has continued to evolve like no other music device ever. Take a look back at the original iPod, then look at the iPod touch. They both play music, but they are totally different. It is that endless pushing of the envelope and never resting that has kept the iPod on top and will continue to do so.

Hey, I admire Wos for what he contributed to the world, but what has he done lately that has changed the world? I rest my case.

Oh yeah, mini-crash on on tech stocks? And going from $270 a share to $90.22 isn't a crash? WTF?

Oct 07, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Apple users indeed

You guys need to get your heads out of your ass and actually read the article and not what MDN posts. MDN has a nice habit of posting bits of articles that point out negatives and not what the actual article is about, and in some cases nothing to do with it at all. Its unbelievable that you guys would bash Woz, the guy who built this company. He was the maker of the machine, Jobs was the business front that got it off the ground.

MDN is pathetic for making such a comment against him.

Oct 07, 08 - 04:33 pm Comment from: crying . . .

iPod has run its course, that market is saturated. This is not news.

and TowerTone - if that is humor, keep the day job (if ya got one).

Oct 07, 08 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

@Bob Nies says: "Whole article is a puff piece that says nothing that everyone already knows." Huh? I've drawn block diagrams of this logic and I still don't get it - But then I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

On another note:

I think it's very possible that the basic iPod line, that is, everything up to the iTouch and iPhone, have more or less peaked out, which is different than implying that they're doomed or on a fast slide downward. I think I see the pattern with the basic line - sort of. Every new announcement with regard to an iPod upgrade usually focuses on one or two major improvements to one of, what I call, the "basic", iPod lines. This last time it was the Nano. Now the Nano has accelerometer, a wide screen, and plays movies, which it should have done in the first place. (Yeah I know, who would want to watch movies on a postage stamp, blah blah blah, but I'll bet it costed more to disable video on the original Nano than it would have to have kept it in there.) But with the iPod Touch and the iPhone out now, really, who does care if the Nano has an accelerometer and can play videos.

So, I think the "basic" iPod lines are still alive and well, but it's fast becoming obvious that Apple is just tweaking the original idea ever more repetitiously - And that's going to continue to keep the device interesting, but definitely not the, over-the-top, popularity hit it has been in the recent past.

I think Apple's really on to something with hand held computing if we can pull the discussion out of the doldrums of cellular this and cellular that. I think the most interesting computing product on the market at the moment is the iPod Touch. Let's see what Apple does with the momentum they've developed around this type of device. Developers certainly get it, and apparently consumer do to because the App Store is still going gang busters.

Oct 07, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: MikeH

Everyday there are more kids having birthdays and demanding iPods!

Oct 07, 08 - 05:05 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Thanks, bginna, I will.
The humor comes from two comments (one obviously false) made by people who may be considered past their prime.

This concludes the lesson on how to understand humor.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled bitching, already in progress....

WOZ = Envious

Oct 07, 08 - 05:11 pm Comment from: eon

I semi-agree with Woz from the standpoint that the iPod as we knew before the iPod touch and iPhone are now legacy or "classic" tech more or less one task oriented music appliances where the touch and iPhone comprise a mobile computer platform. I'm sure as Apple continues to evolve their hardware, the iPod classification will likely refer to non-Mac non cellular computing devices excluding the AppleTV.

Oct 07, 08 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Brau

Woz is right. The standalone iPod over over. That's why it was offered in every color of the rainbow. In its place, the iPod Touch and multifunction devices have already taken over as the objects of desire. Just because the classic iPod design is going bye-bye doesn't mean Apple won't be leading the market, nor did he make that suggestion. And I wholeheartedly agree with his comments regarding Apple's proprietary lockdown on competing apps - it's clearly killing the enthusiasm for what should be the best (open) device on the market.

Oct 07, 08 - 05:33 pm Comment from: Crabs

Actually, if you read the whole interview, he doesn't exactly say that the iPod has "run its course." He says that it's extremely difficult for any product to remain king for more than a couple years, and the iPod has done it for so long that it's going to become more and more difficult for it to keep its #1 status.

Oct 07, 08 - 06:35 pm Comment from: @Jimbo

Dear Woz,

Oct 07, 08 - 06:47 pm Comment from: adahsofflair

Woz is/was an engineer, a very good one at that, but not a visionary in the same level as Jobs. Most people tend to underestimate Steve Job's knack for most things technical. Kids these days, having read enough negative blogs and books like the often quoted and supremely biased against Jobs, Apple Confidential etc., tend to think of Jobs as good salesman only. Heck someone even declared him as Accidental Millionaire. And people like Connie Guglielmo would buy into all that BS bias and write a very negative obituary.

Anyway, long story short, someone mentioned that Woz is jealous of Jobs. And after years of Apple watching, I tend to agree that he can get envious. But there are moments where he is also a fan of Jobs. He cried when Jobs came back to Apple in joy.

There is a 'rumour' that Steve Jobs 'cheated' Woz out of the money Jobs got from Atari. Look up someday in Google and you'll notice Woz changes his version a few times every decade. Sad stuff really. It's beneath your Woz, go create something instead. Or pretend to teach.

Oct 07, 08 - 07:12 pm Comment from: Todd Brown

Woz is irrelevant.

The sooner the tech press realise this, the less we will have to read his inane drivel.

Oct 07, 08 - 07:20 pm Comment from: freebeer

Whatever riches verbally or intellectually Woz had to contribute to the high tech industry has pretty much ran its course.

Oct 07, 08 - 07:38 pm Comment from: Yes not

Woz is The hardware Genius per se.
He lost his touch after making huge pile of money and crashing the plane.
Steve Woz is the man with the Steve J and The Mike Markkula who believed that the Apple will make the money.... After that these 3 persons lost their control of the company totally. Now Steve J is in charge again. Mike is too old and Steve W is looking for something else.

Oct 07, 08 - 08:07 pm Comment from: R

Woz has opinions, but like so many tech geeks, he fails to realize his own in-group hopes don't necessarily match those of the rest of the tech-using, but non-techy world.

iPod is a platform, not a "player" like the walkman started out to be before Sony tried to recapture old glory by rebranding newer tech with the label. iPod touch and iPhone, plus any new stuff that comes along using OS X mobile, have the setup to grow. They are ushering in the future, not collecting dust as new formats emerge.

Woz's opinions are not my own. The only way I would agree that iPod has peaked and is ultimately going to die is if Apple does what they did with the iPod mini and kill the most popular version for something even grander. But that's not really death, that's reincarnation.

Oct 07, 08 - 08:15 pm Comment from: Thomas

As I've said many times before, Woz is no genius, just an average, competent, tech engineer. The computer (Apple I) he put together was inevitable. He or some other competent engineer/hobbiest was going to put a "desktop " computer together because the tech pieces had matured to a level that allowed it.

Imagine, however if Jobs had not been in the picture. His hobby computer would have been merely a nerdy trophy gathering dust in his garage that he could point to and say that he jerry-rigged together about the same time (insert name here) brought the concept to market. The true genius: Seeing the potential of getting the device to market right away and having the balls to approach the right people and get the job done.

He won the lottery by having the right friend at the right time. Now he is a rich, know-nothing, Segway riding, fat slob, playboy who offers nothing to society other than lame opinions.

Woz impresses me not-at-all. His cult-like adoration is not deserved.

Oct 07, 08 - 09:17 pm Comment from: Jubei

Woz is a great guy, but he need to STFU when it comes to Apple and its business. He has no business talking about Apple. He hasn't even worked there in what 15 years? Is he still an honorary employee with a meager salary? If not then stop talking out of your ass Woz. Go talk about Windows or DOS or something else.

read between the lines.

go look up the story of his first disk drive and the number of components it took him vs the big tech companies. then you may email him an apology.

I can, give examples of Woz as a Segway-polo-playing, fat slob, playboy with lame opinions: look at the article and the picture.
