WRAL-TV notches another first: WRAL content now available through iPhone app
Tuesday, January 06, 2009 - 02:28 PM EST

Apple StoreIn another first for Capitol Broadcasting, WRAL.com is now accessible through Apple’s iPhone.

WRAL TV, which is based in Raleigh, is the first local TV station in the U.S. to make its content available through an application developed for the iPhone. News Over Wireless, which is part of Capitol’s New Media Group, developed the application.

Although released officially on Jan. 6, the application has already been downloaded more than 800 times since it was first made available two weeks ago.

Capitol continues to be a pioneer in broadcasting, having launched the first commercial high-definition station more than a decade ago. Capitol also is at the forefront of mobile TV application development, Web technology and delivery and digital radio.

The iPhone application is available at no cost.

“Our goal is to have WRAL News available on as many platforms as possible,” said Jimmy Goodmon, vice president and general manager of CBC New Media Group, in a statement. “The iPhone app is just one more way for us to deliver our award-winning content.”

The application enables iPhone users to navigate across a menu of selections such as news video, weather forecasts, traffic cameras and weather radar.

News Over Wireless works with TV stations across the country to make their content accessible through wireless devices.

Just tried it and the WiFi QuickTime video is perfect. Would like to see one up here in New Jersey. For now, national news is national news.

As a resident of Raleigh, NC let me tell you how great it is to have a media company on the bleeding edge of technology like this. This is definitely worth downloading for everyone, just as something to play with, or if you are deciding to move here soon.

I also live in the Raleigh area, and WRAL has always not only been on the technological edge, but has made transitions as easy as possible for their viewers. Being a longtime viewer of theirs, this app will be a boon.

I just downloaded the USA Today app, and now I will get the WRAL. They do have the best Triangle local news, and for a small city like Raleigh this is great news...

"Since 2006, Raleigh's municipal population has surpassed those of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis, and it is the 15th fastest growing city in the United States. Its population has grown by more than 100,000 since 2000, an increase of nearly 40%. The estimated population of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary CSA was 1,635,974 as of July 1, 2007, with the Raleigh-Cary Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) portion estimated at 1,047,629 residents."
