WSJ: Apple CEO Steve Jobs on track to return from medical leave this month
Thursday, June 04, 2009 - 08:10 PM EST

"After months of uncertainty about Steve Jobs's health, the Apple Inc. chief executive appears on track to return from medical leave this month, said people familiar with Apple," Yukari Iwatani Kane and Joann S. Lublin report for The Wall Street Journal.

"While Mr. Jobs has been on sick leave, some Apple directors have gotten weekly updates about his medical condition from the CEO's physician, according to a person familiar with the matter. Mr. Jobs's recovery 'is coming along' and he is on schedule to return to work later this month, said this person, who has seen Mr. Jobs in recent weeks," Kane and Lublin report.

"'He was one real sick guy,' added this person. 'Fundamentally he was starving to death over a nine-month period. He couldn't digest protein. [But] he took corrective action.' Mr. Jobs occasionally has come into Apple's headquarters since his leave began, said a person who has seen him there," Kane and Lublin report.

"Speculation is mounting among Apple's business partners and analysts about whether Mr. Jobs will make an appearance at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference next week -- particularly because he is known for making surprise announcements at events," Kane and Lublin report. "Much of the buzz appears to be conjecture of the type that has swirled around Apple and Mr. Jobs for years. But two people who do business with Apple said senior Apple managers have told them the company is now trying to coordinate Mr. Jobs's return with a product launch or public event."

"The past five months without Mr. Jobs have given investors confidence that Apple can run smoothly without him," Kane and Lublin report. "Apple's shares have risen 68% since Mr. Jobs announced his leave Jan. 14, compared with a 24% increase in the Nasdaq Composite Index over that period."

Turns sickness into proving Apple can run without him, and set to return to announce a new product - is there another business leader out there even in the same league?

Why could Ballmer be starved of protein?

I meant "couldn't" - doh

Never in doubt, he couldn't stay away even if he died. An inspiration to what anyone can be, if they hold themselves to standards no one else could reach. I only wish every individual had the confidence and passion Steve has.

Could you imagine if your newspaper currier cared about his job as much as Steve cares about his.

Could you imagine the service you would receive at dinner if your server had an actual passion for thier job.

If we all had such high expectations what could we actually become as a species?

Without much of anything other than an updated phone, Apple needs something to keep the faithful in line. This should do it.

Problem is, when the excitement of his return wears off - I give it about 5 days - Apple will still be left with very expensive products that don't do much new in this era of 'what have you done to change the world today?'

"Why couldn't Ballmer be starved of protein?"

He doesn't consume protein. Nor carbohydrates.

He's an all fat man. Can't ya tell? cheese

@Genius at work,

I'm afraid you need to work harder. Much harder.

The naysayers are amusing to me. What more does Apple have to do to prove that they are the one company on the planet capable of introducing real substantive change in the way we deal with computers. If Google hadn't come along Apple would have invented that too. I firmly believe there are products in the pipeline that will destroy all remaining doubt about Steve Jobs and his company's ability to be a beacon of innovation and clear thinking.

Genius? Really?

Moron elsewhere.

SJ's medical leave has hopefully given him the break needed to get well. It has certainly been a good chance for Apple to prove they are deeper than a single man. Still I look forward to seeing SJ back on stage. Maybe next week or in a month?

when steve returns, his big announcement will be the beatles catalog on iTunes...

Will Steve make it to WWDC to reveal revolutionary innovations?

I doubt it. Ballmer is in Redmond all of next week.

Your potential. Our passion.™

If Steve comes back at WWDC he will have a standing ovation for just showing up.

totally crazy, but awesome none the less.

Jun 05, 09 - 02:06 am Comment from: Derek in Milan

Steve is THE guy.

Without Steve we would be forced to use windows, but it wouldnt be in colour, it would be murky grey and the screen would be 4" square with a computer the size of a frickin car with only 128 kb of ram.

Its hard to see how Ballmer is the same species when you compare him to the magical and amazing SteveMeister.....

Jun 05, 09 - 09:00 am Comment from: PhxDoc

I'm glad Steve is feeling better, but I doubt he will make an appearance at WWDC. It doesn't make business sense for him to do so. Whatever products Apple showcases at WWDC will get upstaged in the media by Jobs's appearance and that will dominate the press instead of the products. Apple is too smart to do that.

Jun 05, 09 - 01:41 pm Comment from: @Derek in Milan

"Its hard to see how Ballmer is the same species when you compare him to the magical and amazing SteveMeister....."

But not when you compare him to the big-ass table.

I am a Gator fan. I almost feel like Steve is the head football coach at the University of Apple. We all loved Spurrier. ..... Until he left. I think that is what a good coach does for a team. He helps you love the brand by providing the beat shitaki out there. I will be loyal to Apple unless management let's me down. Eventually SJ will be replaced and like Catholics ponder who a new Pope may be. Apple heads like Gator fans or Paterno / Penn State we want our team to succeed and even more we want the competitors to fail. So go Steve!!

Jun 05, 09 - 03:18 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@The Square Dude,

"... we want our team to succeed and even more we want the competitors to fail."

But, if all of your competitors consistently fail, then they will lose the majority of their fans and will eventually cease to exist. Then all you can do is play with yourselves.
