WSJ: Apple preps software fix for iPhone 3G reception issues reported by some
Friday, August 15, 2008 - 12:14 PM EST

"Apple Inc. is working on a software fix for its new iPhone 3G to remedy dropped phone calls that some users are experiencing, according to people familiar with the matter," Nick Wingfield and Amol Sharma report for The Wall Street Journal.

"Glitches are common for new entrants in the mobile-phone business, one of the most technically challenging categories of products for which to write reliable software code. But the effectiveness and speed with which Apple comes up with a solution for the dropped calls could affect the long-term success of the iPhone, an important growth market for the company. Apple introduced the iPhone 3G, which offers faster Internet access speeds than the original version of the device, on July 11," Wingfield and Sharma report. "'It's not about whether you have problems or don't have them,' said Ken Dulaney, a mobile analyst at research firm Gartner Inc. 'It's how quickly you address them that matters. If Apple addresses them, people will cut them slack.'"

"New iPhone software aimed at addressing the problem is expected to be made available in the coming weeks to iPhone 3G users, who will be able to download and install it on their devices through Apple's iTunes Store," Wingfield and Sharma report.

Finally, balanced coverage of an apparently proportionally small problem that is very troubling to a small number of very bloggish users.

Aug 15, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: ZoneToBeGone

I hope they fix this soon. I have troubles with mine on home wireless just checking emails. Not to mention getting invalid sender address when replying to emails on the Edge network.

Aug 15, 08 - 11:45 am Comment from: elgruga

Actually, Zonetobegone, its got nothing to do with wifi issues.

Its the 3G phone connectivity, in particular when it encounters lower level signals.

Apple will release a firmware fix and then we can hear the last of this little problem that has been turned into the second coming of Attila the Hun.

Millions of iPhone 3G users are NOT getting this issue (including me) but a few thousand are getting the issue.

Aug 15, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: says WHO

who told them they are going to do this? since when does apple announce they are going to release software updates? for problems they DONT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE..

this is FUD

Aug 15, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: rwr

To paraphrase Inigo Mentoya, "I don't sing FUD means what you sink it means..."

It might be misinformation...but it's not FUD.

More unnamed sources.

Until Apple says it, its not true.

Aug 15, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: @elgruga

I never had one problem with MobileMe and what problems existed are now fixed and we still hear about it constantly. If Apple has any problem you can be guaranteed it will be repeated in the press for as long as possible.

Aug 15, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: shmack

but will it make the iphone 3g snappier?

Aug 15, 08 - 11:57 am Comment from: Macaday

Apple speaks off the record when it needs to.

It isn't so stupid as to blindly follow rules - which other idiots perceive that it lives and dies by...

Aug 15, 08 - 12:09 pm Comment from: ProtoDAda

is this just me? or when i turn 3g on in manhattan, i get about 3 hours of battery life. that includes listening to music while walking around the city and maybe an hour or so of talk time! i took it to apple genius, and he said my battery is normal that i should turn 3g off. so i told him what's the point of me buying 3g phone then? he was dumbfound but was so cute that i told him i'll be back if this gets slightly worse. is this just me?

Aug 15, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Jersey_Trader

It would be helpful if WSJ stated that the problem is not 100% of the iPhone 3Gs. But a small 1% to 3% of them.

Aug 15, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

My iPhone is phat and snappy!

Where did the 1% to 3% figure come from?

8 posts til we got to "Snappy" - we're slipping here, folks! raspberry

Aug 15, 08 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Free-America.com

It's not a small problem that affects a small number of users. 3G is basically unusable. I wish i hadn't upgraded from a 1G iPhone. Everyone I see posting on Twinkle seems to have the same issues. GPS also doesn't work when 3G is on.

Aug 15, 08 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Snappy

Just don't use the word "retard."

Aug 15, 08 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Bud Why+Zer

@Free-America.com
GPS works fine while 3G is on.

@MikeK
The 1-3% number is from the BusinessWeek article which was published yesterday.

I have a 3G iPhone and have no problem at all with the phone. My previous phone (Samsung, also 3G) performed similarly. The iPhone has better sound quality than the Samsung had.

Aug 15, 08 - 01:10 pm Comment from: FreddyThePig

Steve Balmer could hire his secretary's son to spend a few days on the blogs whipping up this whole mess and he'd need no more help than that of some of the regular idiots who post here.
I'm one of the two or three people (according to many of these blog posters) who has a boring iPhone that does not need to be rebooted, doesn't crash, the 3G works, so does the GPS, damn, my iPhone "just works!"
Obviously, I'm doing something wrong!!
for that I apologize. I'll see if I can go mess up my iPhone so I can scream and cuss at Apple like the rest of the idiots.

Aug 15, 08 - 01:18 pm Comment from: jtc

I should have sold me shares yesterday while they were up. This looks like our shares are going to take a dive into the great sea while strapped to a very large rock. Hopefully Apple can come out with a fix very soon....

Aug 15, 08 - 01:32 pm Comment from: @FreddyThePig

Freddy, you're lucky. Mine doesn't. It has exactly the problems people are mentioning. It seems suspicious when the store folks were kindly turning 3G off for me on a 3G phone as they sold it. Probably those whose "3G" works fine are running in 2G mode and don't even know it.

Aug 15, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: Uh Oh

Can you say MASSIVE RECALL?

Aug 15, 08 - 03:08 pm Comment from: Cubert

The beauty of minimalist hardware - a software update can fix it.

Aug 15, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: FreddyThePig

@jtc
I should be more sensitive to the fact that some are not as lucky as I have been. I think it is good to try to add some balance both ways. I do get fed up when people go overboard and claim that Apple has become bad, evil, or whatever. Make three million of anything, heck, make three million paperclips and a few are bound to be bent in the wrong place. tjc I hope you find a way to get yours fixed!

Aug 18, 08 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Mel Gross

RobNick, apparently, you don't have an iPhone 3G. I just bought three for my family. We DO have reception problems. So far, no dropped calls, but internet service is very spotty. Sometimes pages don't download at all, giving messages that I should try later.

This happens even with the apps provides by some of the biggest companies in the business such as the NYTimes amongst others.

Don't poo poo people who are having this problem, its serious!

When everything is working well, the phone experience is unbelievable, but when it isn't, it's very frustrating.

Since last Friday evening, when we purchased the phones, I've been using internet services, including bidding, and buying on eBay, and paying through my Paypal account.

So far, in this short time, I've been online, with news, business, music, etc. for more time than I've been online with my various Palmphones during the entire time I had them, from just after 9/11.

That's why quality of service, no matter where the problem is from is so important to us. This phone changes the way we use portable devices.
