ZDNet reviews AT&T Navigator $9.99/mo. turn-by-turn navigation on iPhone 3G S (with video)
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - 02:40 PM EDT

"It has taken Apple a lot longer than I thought it would for them to open up true voice navigation, but the 3.0 OS now allows for this functionality and TeleNav wasted no time at all in rolling out AT&T Navigator for the Apple iPhone," Matthew Miller reports for ZDNet.

"The application is quite fast and responsive on the iPhone 3GS and is pretty full featured. There are some areas for improvements, but it is a great first start and I am excited to see it on the iPhone," Miller reports.

AT&T;isn't getting anymore money from me!

Jun 24, 09 - 02:53 pm Comment from: dogmaticatheist

I'll wait for TomTom.

Jun 24, 09 - 02:55 pm Comment from: ed

A little too pricey in my opinion. Maybe for 20-30 bucks, but 120 a year???

Google maps with gps and a compass covers me 98% of the time. I don't even use the nav system I already have except 4-5 times a year when going somewhere on vacation or something.

Pay $10 bucks when I probably won't even use the feature that month? I have a feeling they would have made more money charging a flat $50. I believe the price will keep most out to begin with. A select few will buy it for 2-3 months and find out they don't get $10 in value and drop it.

Jun 24, 09 - 03:26 pm Comment from: MacBart

ATT is not getting a dime more from me!

Jun 24, 09 - 03:35 pm Comment from: TominTulsa

Why would I pay a monthly recurring fee for this? Bandwidth, no I ALREADY pay for that. Maps - Google has my back...why not a 1 time fee with annual updates available through in-app purchase. AT&T;just can't resist trying to gauge people.

Jun 24, 09 - 03:36 pm Comment from: iStepchild

TomTom and Garvin will have to now have a $5.99 subscription service...then AT&T;will later offer it for free with an iPhone contract...consumers will win.
I want to have a free turn by turn app and then download a $2
vacation trip ditty with talking Pamela Anderson from within the app for turn by turn within my specific vacations perameters. If you're going across country, then charge $5. It'll eat subscription navigation's lunch and make a ton of money.

Jun 24, 09 - 03:41 pm Comment from: LateRegistrant

Funny how people see the price for the Navigator and right away tell AT&T;to get lost.

Jun 24, 09 - 03:44 pm Comment from: Sam

On a side note anyone know what case that is in the video?

Jun 24, 09 - 03:50 pm Comment from: mike_in_helsinki

Not paying application rent to AT&T;.

Who do these idiots think people are.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:03 pm Comment from: Nathan M. Lyman

nasty crack in the windscreen

Jun 24, 09 - 04:10 pm Comment from: Yeah Right

I don't care how good it is... $9.99 a month? Are they nuts! I'll stick with my Garmin mounted on my window.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:26 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

It could come with Megan Fox and I'd still say nope, not another fricking dime to AT&T;.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Macrelated

No to 10 per month 9 (or any nav payment) to AT&T;. Wait for TomTom or get a stand alone Nav unit entirely controlled by voice.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

@Nathan M. Lyman...

That's why is wife is driving this time.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:44 pm Comment from: MacTony

If it comes with Megan Fox....... I'm in wink I'm not paying $10/month for that app. It looks nice, but if you are paying that kind of cash. It should be used as your main navigation device. I have a nice Garmin that I use for trips. I use the iPhone when I need directions around town.

Jun 24, 09 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Petey

Same here - Tom Tom is the best at this type of thing.

I can wait for the Tom Tom version.

Sometimes being 1st to market isnt always the best!

Jun 24, 09 - 04:50 pm Comment from: Predrag

Apparently, nobody here is aware that this is a standard price for GPS navigation software on ALL carriers in the US, and on ALL phones that have GPS (including crappy 3G Sony-Ericsson Walkman phones that sell for $0 plus contract).

Obviously, many here believe that, since they are iPhone users, all these extra services MUST be cheaper than for other phones (or better yet, free). I'm sure, if I had an iPhone, I wouldn't want this service if it meant paying $10 for it (I don't even HAVE a car; I live in Manhattan). I have no doubt, though, that there will be people who will find this service convenient and will sign up for it. For 30 cents per day, they may consider it a good deal.

Let's first wait what the competition decides to do (Tom-Tom, Garmin, etc).

Jun 24, 09 - 04:54 pm Comment from: cogitoergomac

Of course, the predictable whiny chorus. I will say what a few others have said: ATT's prices for their plans are competitive. You may not like them--name me a U.S. cell phone carrier who is not hated by a sizable number of their subscrtibers--but it doesn't change the fact that across most of their plans, they are priced like their competitors. Does that mean I like AT&T;? Well, they happen to work well where I live and work and most everywhere I travel. And I was a Cingular/ATT subscriber before the iPhone came out. So, "satisfied" may be a better term. Though I confess that I am thriled by unlimited data, given the incredible amount I pull through my phone.

But if you really hate them so much, switch networks. I love my iPhone, all 6 of them I have bought. But if the carrier was actually gouging me--especially with 6 of them--I wouldn't put up with it. So, quit your bitching for once and put your money where your mouth is. Or do your research and prove me, and the several others here on MDN who have said something similar, wrong. And then make your case to ATT, or publish on your own blog where other whiners can join you. Or here's an idea: you can use this app for free for 30 days, and then actually review it or do something useful like that. Most real reviewers have been positive about the app, and so far, it ain't bad, though it's probably not worth 9.99 a month to me. Being constructive, there's a thought.

I'm waiting for TomTom. Their GPS works great and are easy to use, like Apple products. I'm sure their app will be worth every penny.

"Apparently, nobody here is aware that this is a standard price for GPS navigation software on ALL carriers in the US" - PreDrag

Yes, I'm aware that this is the standard price. But that was when the carrier essentially had a monopoly on providing the service via the phone. Their only competition was standalone or built in car options. Now with 3.0, other carriers will be able to compete directly with AT&T;on the phone. Their big disadvantage will be that they will - unlike AT&T;- have to pay 30% of the in-app purchase to Apple. But with competition from many sources hopefully a reasonable price will be reached.

HAS ANYONE NOTICED A DRAMATIC SLOW DOWN LOADING WEB SIGHT PAGES WITH THE LATEST VERSION OF SAFARI?

Please share your experiences any any fixes.

@Predrag

"Apparently, nobody here is aware that this is a standard price for GPS navigation software on ALL carriers in the US, and on ALL phones that have GPS."

Not true, Sprint does not charge extra for GPS, Sprint navigation (TeleNav) is included in their plans. Not to mention GPS is fully open on Sprint, HTC touch Pro and Diamond can run TomTom and Garmin on Sprint at no additional charge.

@ WhozeYourMacDaddy?,

"HAS ANYONE NOTICED A DRAMATIC SLOW DOWN LOADING WEB SIGHT PAGES WITH THE LATEST VERSION OF SAFARI?"

Those aspirins you took for that headache must have been your teenager's stash of bennies.

Speed will slow down even the fastest browser which is what Safari 4 is right now.

Nice try though.

Jun 25, 09 - 08:46 am Comment from: NCIceman

I gotta agree with the majority here, nice software, but not worth 10 bucks a month. I mean really, how often do you use your navigation system? I already know how to get to where I drive 99.9% of the time, can't justify the cost for the .1 percent of the time I go somewhere new, and even then, it might not be turn by turn but google maps does the job.

I will wait to see what other software comes out. I am betting someone with write an app that doesn't need a monthly fee.

Jun 25, 09 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Hg Wells

@WhozeYourMacDaddy,

Interesting to read your comment about Safari being slow. Coincidentally, moments from now, I'd planned to runn some utilities (DW+) to see about fixing whatever's going on that's caused a major slow down. But I'm not sure it's just Safari. It actually seems as though there's more to it. Of course, having 11 windows with 35 tabs open at the same time isn't helping any. But I've always run lots of tabs and something feels different.

Jul 02, 09 - 03:19 am Comment from: Veronicacburgess

My concern is that the Tom Tom and Garmain gps versions for the iPhone may be blocked by AT&T;, any truth to that? I really would like to have it occasionally.
