“Radar reports that Apple’s ‘Mac Guy,’ Justin Long is out, but ‘PC Guy’ John Hodgman stays,” Bambi Hambi writes for Mac360. “Is Apple’s best ever TV ad campaign headed for history or ready to make history?”
“In true Apple style, the change will be historic. ‘PC Guy’ will switch to a Mac,” Hambi writes. “What a perfect set up for Apple to show Windows virus weary PC users how easy and wonderful a digital life can be when you switch to a Mac than having ‘PC Guy’ actually switch to a Mac.”
Hambi writes, “Don’t tell me that’s not a brilliant idea. Will it happen? Yes, sometime between the launch of Windows Vista and the introduction of Mac OS X Leopard.”

an article penned by “Bambi Hambi”? oh my goodness… let the quips begin!
His DVD movie vs. the Mac Guy’s movie was what convinced him. It’d sure have been enough for me.
The title of this is misleading…i thought this was some inside scoop….but it’s just random specualtion.
OMG, that is brilliant. It’s so obvious, I have no idea why I never thought of that before.

So is it Bambi’s opinion that this will happen or has it been confirmed?
That is SO the right move to have him switch. However it probably means the ad campaign would be dead after that. What do you do after he switches? Convert more “lost souls” using winblows? Ad campaigns shouldn’t last forever, but this is such a good one!!!!! I will miss it…
I don’t get it … the pc becomes a mac… that just doesn’t happen.. the mac became a pc.. unless your saying that the pc was able to do a complete file transfer into a windows running mac… bla bla.. I still think ists a bit sketchy.
Al Gore will be the new PC guy.
He will have lost a little weight, have better and cooler clothes, and have a hot babe or two hanging around. His self esteem will be lifted. just as in the real world.
I’m not saying that won’t happen, but I call BS if it does. As I pointed out the other day, the actors are playing computers, not computer users. It makes no sense to have the PC, who John Hodgman was originally cast as because he is goofy looking, and plays the part of a buffoon (I’m not knocking him, I’m a big fan, but that’s the role), to now, somehow, become the ultra cool, sexy Mac. It doesn’t make sense.
even if this were the case.. where the pc transfers himself into a mac.. wouldn’t it just be the mac with the pc’s voice?
Huh? How can he switch? HE’S A PC! The point of the ads was to heap abuse on the PC itself, not on the users, by having the actors embody the machines!
MW total, as in “that would be totally confusing.”
Wow, several others beat me to the point. I’ve gotta learn to type faster…
The possibilities for demonstrating BootCamp/Parallels are hilarious.
The guys in the commercial are not representing computer users, but they are personifying actual computers, therefore this speculation makes no sense. How is the pc transformed into a mac? Will vista do it? Ughh…no.
The only way this could work is if the pc pretends to be a mac for a few commercials but fails miserably. That would communicate how vista is a poor ripoff of the real mac.
Ahem. “They don’t need Long. Boot Camp means Hodgman can play both parts. One could be less stuffy than the other.”
The poster Change predicted it in that thread, too.”Hi I’m a Mac now I’m just another a PC”.
What do we win?
there is the reason why john long dropped. he has a schedule to shoot movie ‘live hard or die hard?’ with bruce wills. the movie will release 2007. it’s about the story which hackers shut down US techologically. John long is a character who tries to hack out US system. that’s bad image could affect Apple commercial, and his image.
oh, shit. justin long-_- whatever.
We all know that PC guy and Mac guy are representative of PC users and Mac users, not just the machines. That’s remarkably clear, even to Windows users. The metaphor combines machine and user and touches a chord with both camps, not insulting or alienating PC users. The burr under the saddle has always been Mac’s smugness and that’s about to end. What’s next?
Having PC guy actually switch to become Mac guy is a stretch, of course, but within the realm of possibility. What an event that would be, especially if timed to dent Vista’s first month of public life. PC guy becomes Mac guy (switches) and then goes on to help of PC users switch, too.
I love it. It’ll never happen. But I love it.
I’m still waiting for a new Mac so I can switch to Windows on it. Frankly, being Mac only has been pretty much of a drag. What I mean is that there’s hardly anybody around to show you how to work the darn thing. That makes for an astonishingly long guess-and-by-golly learning curve, you know?
Anyways I’ve sure enough hung in there with just the Mac all these years .. but I’m looking forward to finally having some company by also becoming familiar with Windows. Make what you will of it. heh.
Maybe Apple should start advertising their actual computers. Just a thought.
Hi! I’m a UMPC, I’m overly sensitive about my size. I compensate for that by having a very complex GUI. Keep me happy or I may turn blue on you.
…and in those ads, maybe they should show the price comparisons to equivalent Dell machines. It would be nice for them to show the world that Apple computers are priced as aggressively as they are. Maybe not as sexy as some ads, but the point needs to be made.
I predict Feb. 4, 2007 (Super Bowl Sunday). This fits nicely between the release dates of Vista and Leopard.
what happens if leopard is released before vista? “Yes, sometime between the launch of Windows Vista and the introduction of Mac OS X Leopard.”
