'Cry for a Shadow' by the Beatles is on iTunes.

What is this guy talking about?

Apr 01, 07 - 12:41 pm Comment from: Mr. Anderson

Well, if it's an April Fools joke the joke's on the BBC, they are reporting this story.

Apr 01, 07 - 12:44 pm Comment from: Toby Belch

Yes, I can't imagine EMI or the BBC going to such lengths for an April 1st joke.

But who knows? Tomorrow will tell.

Time for Beatles on iTunes with NO DRM! That would blow away everyone!

Apr 01, 07 - 12:49 pm Comment from: PhilC

In the UK at least you can only play April Fools jokes before noon, otherwise the joker becomes the fool. The BBC article was dated 15:25 so maybe it is true.

Apr 01, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Dude

So wait, Wise, you're going to go to war against the statement "no Beatles tunes are available" with "Cry for a Shadow?" lol... It's a friggin' instrumental three of them did originally as a backup track for another artist. Sheesh! lol

Apr 01, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Boodles

It's just too bad that the "unmamed artist or band" is Wolfmother. Oh well.

wink

Supposedly cnet checked with emi and they confirmed it's not a joke but cannot provide further details.

Already have beatles music but interested in solo career work by
the members. Most greatest hits cd's kinda suck.

I hear Jobs is a big fan.

Apr 01, 07 - 01:52 pm Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

If true, I would love to see some Beatles music videos made available on iTunes for both the iPod and Apple TV. The mix of music and video could be new mixes of the old material. That would be the cat's meow.

Apr 01, 07 - 01:56 pm Comment from: Cubert

Dropping the DRM on EMI's music. How long until the other companies follow suit?

Tomorrow never knows.

Apr 01, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Twenty Benson

EMI to announce it is re-naming the entire label to 'Apple Records' and will begin to use the licensed Apple Inc. logo as its exclusive branding across all areas of its business. To launch the change, the entire Beatles catalogue will be available on iTunes. In a statement, EMI said it has decided to swap 'Essex Music Industries' as a name in preference to 'Apple' to better reflect the global nature of its business and the importance of digital distribution - of which Apple's iTunes leads the world.

April Fool.

Apr 01, 07 - 02:07 pm Comment from: ken

It's the DRM free music. I bet.

Apr 01, 07 - 02:20 pm Comment from: mike

It's not crazy enough to be an april fools joke. Business news? Beatles releasing their material on iTunes wouldn't even really be News anyway.

BTW, this is the BBC, are they likely to piss around w april fools jokes?

Apr 01, 07 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Adam W.

News.com has this story (which they verified with EMI) on their main page, so it is unlikely it is an April 1st joke.

Apr 01, 07 - 02:41 pm Comment from: mike k.

i will buy more music off iTMS if they remove DRM. I would buy even more if they upped the bitrate and i would buy even even more if they had a lossless-DRMless option.

With my last purchase (Beirut's EP Lon Gisland) i would have bought it off the iTMS if it weren't for the DRM. I ended up paying twice as much at a brick and mortar independent store (Newbury Comics).

There is a reason allofmp3.com is popular among people who are willing to pay for music and it is not just the price ...

The music industry need to get with the program. Some of us are willing to pay for music. Give us some reasonable digital options.

Microsoft Corp. issued a surprise press release this morning announcing that the company had “performed an illegal operation and would be shut down.” Company executives refused to provide further information regarding the cause of the unexpected shutdown, only issuing a cryptic error number of $00038FF577 and advising all interested parties to “contact their system administrator.”

Usually! Hahahahahahaha. Most of the time, except when it really matters.

i think this might actual have nothing to do with the beatles. Maybe EMI and Apple are gonna talk about DRM free music downloading grin

H

Apr 01, 07 - 05:19 pm Comment from: WiseGuy

If anyone beleives that the Beatles (under EMI) would drop DRM, you're in for a rude awakening.

The Beatles will finally sell their music online, but it won't sell outrageously for very long because the people who listen to that band either already has the music already.

That was the whole purpose in some of these bands refusing to go on iTMS, to maximize sales of cds and thier crappy filler songs.

But now it's apparant the concept of the album is dying and the younger generation is weened on 'ala carte' downloads.

Since the Beatles haven't produced anything for awhile (most are dead) they really have nothing to lose at this point.

Oh!, but they will make a media event of it to encourage sales.

The last dying breath of a dying band, they were hoping Apple would die first.

Hahahahahaha!! We outlived the determined Beatles!!!

Apple Records my @ss. Suck John Sculleys .

Microsoft Corp. issued a surprise press release this morning announcing that the company had “performed an illegal operation and would be shut down.”

MS has been operating illegally since they ripped off CP/M to get the IBM deal, giving the world a taste of what was to come...

Apr 01, 07 - 06:19 pm Comment from: AlanAudio

Although the BBC has played many April Fool's tricks over the years, this was never one of them because the original statement from EMI was timed at 13:00 UK time and the BBC published it at 16:25. April Fools pranks have to be performed before noon.

"Unlike FOX, BBCs reports are usually true." - now that's the funniest thing I've seen posted here in a long time.

EMI to Sell Much of its Music Without Antipiracy Software
By Ethan Smith and Nick Wingfield
Word Count: 590 | Companies Featured in This Article: EMI Group, Apple, Warner Music Group, Vivendi, Sony, Bertelsmann
In a major reversal of the music industry's longstanding antipiracy strategy, EMI Group PLC is set to announce Monday that it plans to sell significant amounts of its catalog without anticopying software, according to people familiar with the matter.

The London-based music company is to make its announcement in a press conference that will feature Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs. EMI is to sell songs without the software -- known as digital rights management, or DRM -- through Apple's iTunes Store and possibly through other online outlets, too.

DRM has been a contentious issue in the world of online music ...
