More consumers dump Microsoft’s Windows, switch to Apple’s Mac
Friday, July 11, 2008 - 05:12 PM EST

"For a long time, David Alison was a Mac hater," Beth Snyder Bulik reports for Advertising Age. "In fact, one of the avatars he used was the face of actor John Hodgman, the PC guy in Apple's 'Get a Mac' ads. As a software developer, he was heavily invested in and committed to Windows. While he had been a longtime iPod fan, it hadn't been enough to get him to switch."

Snyder Bulik reports, "But then last year his friends started buying iPhones and making the switch -- 'guys like me, who didn't really care for Macs.' And when the latest Windows operating system, Vista, came out, 'It didn't do anything for me,' Mr. Alison said. 'The very initial version was really a mess.'"

"So he went to an Apple store," Snyder Bulik reports. "The clean, simple and friendly experience convinced him it was time to consider a Mac, and now, six months after his first MacBook purchase, he has added a desktop Mac Pro and another MacBook Pro."

"Mr. Alison's experience is not unusual. Blog after blog chronicles the move from Windows to Mac operating systems," Snyder Bulik reports.

So what's new?? People are getting smarter

Jul 11, 08 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Maconymous

I know this is the wrong article for this question, but is anyone else receiving a "invalid username/password" on the MobileMe website? I do, even though my mac and iphone are syncing with the same username and pw.

Once you've tried MAC, you won't go back...

Jul 11, 08 - 04:22 pm Comment from: Bloodbath?

Who could have thought 11th of July 2008 would be such a slow Apple news day that you need to fill it with "Me too bought a Mac" story from yesterday's Advertising Age.

Jul 11, 08 - 04:33 pm Comment from: mark

But it's good to see such an article in a non-tech magazine like Advertising Age. Opens up the minds of still a few more people.

Free publicity. Can't beat it.

Jul 11, 08 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Woody

@Toljaso, I've always liked Media Access Control. And Macs, too!

Jul 11, 08 - 04:35 pm Comment from: R Cane

To Maconymous: I did too. But it worked when I re-entered it.

Please note: MobileMe works fine for me in FireFox 3.

But it will not work in Safari 4 Developer Preview.

Jul 11, 08 - 04:43 pm Comment from: BSOD

What I find amazing is that a software developer, of all people would, hate the Mac and OS X. It is hands down the best development environment there is.

Personally I think that it is silly for anyone to limit their OS experience to just one operating system and judge the others as deficient.

Jul 11, 08 - 04:44 pm Comment from: mac

apple could do with a positive spin today wink

Jul 11, 08 - 04:53 pm Comment from: qka

David Alison's blog, http://www.davidalison.com/ is a good read.

As he is new to the Mac, he is still looking for programs that either 1) replace something he used on Windows, or 2) make the Mac experience better in general.

I've been using Macs since '84, and I still learn things from his blog.

Highly recommended!

Jul 11, 08 - 04:54 pm Comment from: AppleNut

In the end, operating system loyalty and religions are the same. When people finally wise up, they have invested so much time and energy into it that they decide it's just too much hassle to switch.

But once you let go, you are finally free!

Jul 11, 08 - 05:07 pm Comment from: Lol wut

I use both PCs and Macs on a regular basis and neither one of them really stands out to me. But since I can get the same performance for half the cost on a PC, and with a much wider range of software options, I really don't see why anybody would buy a mac instead of a PC. Although I have noticed that most of the mac users I know are entirely ignorant of how to use a computer... but that's just anecdotal evidence.

Jul 11, 08 - 05:32 pm Comment from: say wut

Lol wut... You sound like you fit nicely into a beige, nondescript world. Do you have MS Office certification?

I chuckle...

Jul 11, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: MacLovin

I used to be a Mac-hater too, but now I can't stand computing on anything other than a Mac. I had never used a mac before in my life until I went to a highschool that used Macs. As soon as I used them, I loved them. I then switched all the computers in my house over to macs, and we aren't going back!!!

Jul 11, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: deppitybob

@Lol wut:

Astroturf much?

Jul 11, 08 - 05:38 pm Comment from: MacLovin

@say wut: I that is totally not true, and its a complete stereotype. I know how to do pretty much anything on a PC, it just takes twice as long... and its just dumb the way the menus are laid out... not to bash the *cough* windows GUI. *cough*

Jul 11, 08 - 05:39 pm Comment from: MacLovin

*lol wut, not say wut, sorry...

Jul 11, 08 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

Lol Wut,

If you actually used a Mac on a regular basis you wouldn't be making a moronic statement like that. I would have to say that you are a lying sack of crap. Anybody second that motion?

Jul 11, 08 - 05:40 pm Comment from: MacLovin

sure bill, I'll second that...

Jul 11, 08 - 05:42 pm Comment from: MacLovin

@ lol wut: does your "wide range of software options" include viruses?

Jul 11, 08 - 05:48 pm Comment from: Dennis O'Connor

@MacLovin

I am curious. How can you hate a platform that you have never used? Then when you finally try it, you become a convert. I see so many comments by people who seem to think that the WinTel environment is the only viable one and for Apple to put forth something different is something to be hated for its difference. Maybe you can explain this?

Thanks,

Jul 11, 08 - 05:57 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

@lol wut

I disagree. My Mac runs both OSs and there is no way XP can keep up with OS X.

XP cannot boot from an external hard drive and it can only address 4GB of RAM, a third of which is sucked up by XP.

Vista quickly compromises weenie PCs and forget about ANY pleasure from 64-bit computing.

You say half the cost, I say liar!

Jul 11, 08 - 06:07 pm Comment from: Uh Oh

Time to make another batch of kool aid.

Jul 11, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: ken1w

Those "get a Mac" ads are really clever. They basically annoy the Mac haters enough over time so that they eventually have to consider getting a Mac. This particular guy even adopted PC's face as a self-imposed reminder. And once they actually consider and try a Mac, they make the switch.

Jul 11, 08 - 06:33 pm Comment from: An Optimist

One of the embedded ads on MacDailyNews has been infected with spyware. I was reading this article (on Leopard, of course), when the Safari window suddenly closed, a new window popped up saying that my Vista computer was infected and I needed to download their software. No Microsoft operating systems are running here at all.

Jul 11, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: MacLovin

@Dennis O'Connor: Well, thats what makes me sad that I hated a platform I've never used. I think its just that I was scared that I wouldn't be able to use it, or I wouldn't be able to figure stuff out. Or it would explode and give me error messages. I also thought that Mac OS was very unstable (oh, how untrue...). Of course all that has been proven wrong since I switched. And I think that the other people who use windows and "hate" the Mac OS think the same as I did, that since they were so used to windows (believe me, I could change my wallaper in 12 clicks with my microsoft mouse...) that they wouldn't be able to figure out a new OS. People just don't like change. And when I was bashing the mac, my computer teacher used a word no one had ever called me before; "Ignorant". I think that most Windows users are ignorant (sorry for such a harsh word... lol) that they already have prejudices against something they know nothing about.

Hope that helps!

Jul 11, 08 - 07:01 pm Comment from: Lol_Wut

Hahaha, man. You fanboys are priceless. I've never seen so much irrational anger over a computer before. Face it, there's nothing special about macs. There's certainly nothing wrong with them, they're outstanding machines and are good at what they do. But really, I just don't see why I should pay twice as much for the exact same thing. I've used both operating systems. I have macs where I work and use a PC at home. Like I said, neither one particularly wows me or ticks me off. But the PC is far easier to customize and is much less expensive. For example, my friend just bought a nice new mac and bought a 2GB memory upgrade for $400. When he told me that I assured him he was mistaken because nobody would ever charge anything near that much for memory. Then he showed me his receipt, and sure enough he had bought memory at $200 a gig. Price gouging anybody? Of course if you want a mac you really don't have a choice other than to get robbed like that. No thank you.

Jul 11, 08 - 07:02 pm Comment from: shen

actually, ignorant describes most computer users.

i have used windows 2.0 to XP, 2 BSD flavors and several linux distros including one i rolled myself. and though linux has many good things going for it (my preferred server OS in fact) i won't willing change my desktop OS again until either Apple falls apart or everyone else catches up about 7 levels....

remember, to a lot of people a computer is new a new idea, they remember a world before the internet. now kids, well, they have a very different idea of what a computer is and should do. and all of the kids i talk to *hate* windows. the only ones under 14 that use it at all use it *only* to game.

i just hope Apple is ready for the influx of new users.

"XP cannot boot from an external hard drive and it can only address 4GB of RAM, a third of which is sucked up by XP.

Que? Any OS can be booted from an external hard drive if you know what you're doing. You're right XP is memory capped but when it was written 4GB was plenty of room and vista doesn't have that problem. I'm not sure where you're getting that stuff about 64 bit computing. Sure Vista gets along better with 32 bit chipsets, but that's to be understood. The 64 bit problems have largely been addressed. Like I said, I really don't have any big problems with macs in and of themselves- I just don't see why people are so emotionally invested in a machine. Well actually I do know why, but it has nothing to do with practical matters of computer use.

Jul 11, 08 - 07:10 pm Comment from: shen

"But really, I just don't see why I should pay twice as much for the exact same thing. "

go price me a machine as fast as my mini (the easy one to match performance wise) when it runs vista and has firewire and then add the cost of the apps OS X has and vista doesn't, show me twice as much. please.

better yet, price me something that compares to the MBA. or the top line pro.

oh wait, you can't even buy comparables. they aren't options.

and then add the hours of tech support you need to keep it running and the AV software and the poor vista performance and get back to me. we aren't stupid. many of have owned, or still do own windows machines. we know better. your BS is of no use to you here.....

also, if you can't install your own RAM, and buy it from any dealer at any price, you aren't smart enough to "customize" anything on a PC.

now go away or we shall taunt you again a second time.

Along those lines, I've also heard, "the Mac-er the berry, the sweeter the juice."

@Lol_Wut

So who is the fanboy here? So you are happy with Windows? Good for you. If there is no real difference other than a higher price for the Mac, why are so many windows users making the switch? I hear of very few Mac users switching to Windows because they want to. Sorry, but I use XP at work. No thanks, they can keep it.

Jul 11, 08 - 07:24 pm Comment from: shen

"So who is the fanboy here? So you are happy with Windows? Good for you"

the real question is, "so why are you here then???"

"the real question is, "so why are you here then???""

Fanboy rage is humorous. I've got no problem with macs really. But the mac faithful are a different story. But you're always good for few cheap laughs.

Well, there's the difference between us.

Most of us have several problems with Windows: like the way it looks and the way it works.

We also have a problem with WinDroid cult members: it's not that you're a cheap laugh, more like just cheap.

"I have macs where I work and use a PC at home"
This is supposed to show that you know how to use a Mac?
Judging by your comments, you don't know the first thing about using a Mac.
Stop trying to judge the Mac experience - it's obvious that you don't know what you're talking about.

I love it when m$ fanboys try & talk about Macs - saying all of the same stupid cr@p they claim that Mac fans do.

""the real question is, "so why are you here then???""

Fanboy rage is humorous"

you know, i know that it is hard to guess emotions over a text, but what have read that sounds like rage?

aka: project much?

do i need to put wink in for you?

seriously, the question is, if your windows experience is so great, why do feel you have to go astroturf on a mac site?

in other words, we aren't mad, emotionally invested, etc. etc. or at least i know i am not. guess i can't speak for the others here, but since it doesn't read like they are, you seem to be failing comprehension. what i am is amazed that you are so ill-informed, and that you project so much, and that you would even bother to come here if weren't trying to prove something.

it isn't for a discussion, otherwise you would actually answer things like the price issue. but you don't. you read like the definition of a troll.

i know, cheap laughs.

when you post under a "lol cat" style name and show nothing but ignorance about the topic at hand, the good news is that we are both getting a laugh out of it... wink (there you are smiley for the humor impaired)

"I love it when m$ fanboys try & talk about Macs - saying all of the same stupid cr@p they claim that Mac fans do."

at least he didn't say "MAC". *snort* i love that......

An Optimist,

I just had the same thing happen to me. I closed the page and a box popped up saying my computer was running slow because I was infected. When I closed the box a new window popped up for Vista Anti-Virus 2008 and started scanning my iBook. I had to close Safari to stop it.

Well, I guess we had better get used to this kind of thing. Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows.

"Now there's some fanboy rage. It's not the Mac experience it's just a stupid computer! Stop being such a bunch of ultra nerds."

It's not fanboy rage - I just can't stand ignorant people commenting on things with which they obviously have no experience.

Especially when their complaints take the exact same form that they ignorantly like to jibe...

Jul 13, 08 - 06:28 pm Comment from: me

"It's not fanboy rage - I just can't stand ignorant people commenting on things with which they obviously have no experience. "

This entire forum is made up of ignorant people. Do you think anybody here knows anything about OS design or how to use APIs? It doesn't stop us bashing anybody that says anything that's positive about a non Apple branded product.

I do wish they would make an OS version that runs on non apple hardware. I would pay a premium for it
