An OpenAI employee who left the ChatGPT maker for Apple sent more than 100 files about an unreleased product to a personal account and later made a presentation about the unreleased product to senior Apple leadership, a new filing by OpenAI in the lawsuit between it and Apple alleges, according to reporting by Reuters’ Stephen Nellis and Deepa Seetharaman.
The allegation appears in a court filing in the ongoing trade-secrets dispute between the companies in U.S. District Court in California. Apple sued OpenAI and two former Apple employees in July, accusing them of misappropriating confidential information related to hardware design, manufacturing, and supply-chain operations as OpenAI expands into consumer devices. OpenAI has denied the claims and described the dispute as largely of Apple’s making.
The new filing turns the spotlight on an OpenAI employee who moved in the opposite direction — to Apple — and allegedly transferred materials concerning an unreleased OpenAI product before presenting related information to Apple executives.
The case has already produced extensive discovery fights, including recent judicial orders granting Apple expedited access to certain OpenAI hiring and interview records involving former Apple staff. Neither company has issued an immediate public response to the latest allegation in the filing.
The lawsuit underscores intensifying competition between the two firms as OpenAI pushes into hardware while Apple works to integrate advanced AI into its products.
